View Full Version : Who had the best and weakest chin in boxing history?
slicksouthpaw16 02-20-2008, 09:10 AM I think that Terry Norris, Jeremy Williams, and Carl Williams are some canidates for the weakest. Norris is a great fighter that i enjoy to watch, but id say he had the weakest. Everything that Simon Brown was hitting him with in thier first fight was having tremendous effect on him. He was even hurt with a jab in the first round, which is a shame because Brown was moving up in weight to fight him.
TheGreatA 02-20-2008, 09:52 AM Not top fighters but
Eric Crumble http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=5316&cat=boxer
and Ed Strickland http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=5958&cat=boxer
Tuggers1986 02-20-2008, 09:55 AM Hagler had a granite chin. he could take shots all day and not be phased.

Thats very dangerous and im shocked that they were alowed to fight with those many knockout losses. Not only did those two lose every fight that they had, but they were knocked out every single time. Its funny but pretty messed up...lol.

ed strickland was awesome
TheGreatA 02-20-2008, 04:25 PM Ed Strickland was one of the greats for sure. He lost to 55 year old Ron Lyle by KO.
thiefery 02-20-2008, 08:20 PM gotta go with Terrible Terry... I mean you talk about a glass jaw!
marvdave 02-20-2008, 08:49 PM in my time
best:
-Hagler
-Cobb
-Ali
I'll have to think about the worst, but Norris and Julian Jackson come to mind
Burning Desire 02-21-2008, 10:09 AM Norris's chin wasn't that bad he took flush shots from Leonard who is a good puncher, and Norris never even once looked in trouble. In Norris's prime he was only ever KO by big punchers like Simon Brown, Julian Jackson. If you actually watch his fights he did take some good punches of pretty good punchers without even flinching, Now im not trying to make out Norris's chin was solid but it isn't as weak as some people are making out.

Thats was when Leonard was shot and had nothing left. Simon Brown was actually moving up in weight to fight him so Norris was the natuarly bigger man. Troy Waters almost had Norris out as well. He was a pretty good puncher as well but he didn't do well against top opposition.

Leonard may have been shot but he was still a good puncher, like the old saying goes you never lose your punching power, if people actually look up Norris's opposition in his prime he was only ever dropped or KO by big punchers, Im not trying to make out Norris had a good chin, but some people are saying his chin was one of the weakest in history and i think thats a little unfair.

Leonard barley landed anything and his reflexis and timing was way off. If you seen the first Norris/Brown fight, then you will see what i mean. He was being shook up and rocked by punches that shouldn't have had that effect on him. He was even badly hurt by a jab in the first round. Then he kept getting hurt by short counter rights, it was pathetic.
toolboxdiver 02-21-2008, 12:59 PM Toughest Jaw I would say Mathew Saad Muhamad (Matt Franklin) I saw him take some serious punches and he kept on going til his apponent punched himself out, then Matt Knocked him out
Hester65 02-22-2008, 12:09 PM Marciano had a brick head. Ali could take just about anything. Hagler had a chin of steel.
Floyd Patterson seemed to have a weak chin. He was knocked down more times than any heavyweight champ ever. I could be wrong in saying that its bad because I haven't done all my research and I don't want to discredit a legend with an inaccurate statement.
Grebs Ghost 02-24-2008, 04:48 PM Juan Laporte and Oliver Mccall had some dense chins
Terry Norris had a horrible chin but had all the courage and heart one could Imagine
Count Patron 02-24-2008, 05:22 PM Oliver Mccall had some dense chins
And some big alligator tears.
Jim Jeffries 02-25-2008, 12:44 AM Oliver McCall, David Tua, Tex Cobb, Marvin Hagler, Bernard Hopkins, Nikolai Valuev, all have some pretty damn good beards.
Tommy Morrison, Julian Jackson, Nigel Benn among others had some pretty weak ones.
kcxiv 02-26-2008, 12:38 AM By far, Terry Norris. Dude had heart and determination, but no chin.
duffgun 02-26-2008, 08:16 AM Marciano had a brick head. Ali could take just about anything. Hagler had a chin of steel.

Patterson didnt have the strongest chin but most of the time he got up when knocked down, The only time he was knocked out by one punch was against Liston.
slicksouthpaw16 02-26-2008, 07:08 PM I have to add Tommy Morrison in for one of the weakest. When Bent even touched him, he was ready to go.
slicksouthpaw16 02-26-2008, 07:15 PM Its one of the funniest moments in boxing history. Morrison was ready for a big payday with Lennox Lewis and was knocked out.

vandiar 02-28-2008, 04:19 PM no james toney? this dude has one of the best beard's I've seen.
actionjackson 02-28-2008, 05:04 PM If your talking about best chins how can ANYBODY neglect to say "Big" George Chuvalo. Man has the best chin I have ever witnessed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0alYjaq62o
Theres a clip from the movie on him.
actionjackson 02-28-2008, 05:04 PM and anouther fun fact to add, Mr Chuvalo was NEVER once knocked down
poet682006 02-29-2008, 01:01 AM Tex Cobb wasn't human. I keep thinking back to his fight against Ernie Shavers: No human being should have withstood those right hands from Shavers. Tex just kind of looked at Ernie and punched back. Unreal. For glass jaws? Try Bob Satterfield. He had unreal punching power but no chin. His fights always stood a good chance of ending in one round: Either by him or by his opponent!

I agree. Toney has a great chin. Unfortunately, this is also the reason why it's probably not a good idea for him to keep fighting as all he is going to do is is keep getting his head beat in.
Hagler and Cobb are of course legends in this category
Evander Holyfield also deserves a mention. He was hit with some pretty devastating blows over his career and still kept going forward. (Like Toney, this is why he shouldn’t be fighting either.)

And the funny thing is that Cobb had amazing chin yet he was dropped 3 times in the 1st round and stopped in the 1st round by Dee Collier.
Dempsey 1919 03-01-2008, 01:01 PM The best chin is George Chuvalo, IMO. P4p, it's Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The worst chin is maybe Herbie Hide or p4p Norris.:fing02:
strongscent 03-01-2008, 01:35 PM I think the boxer with the weakest chin is Carl Williams. While the boxer with the string chin is James Toney.
sterling 03-01-2008, 03:06 PM weakest hmm from what i seen in them records that he posted i gta say ed strickland lol
strongest jake lamotta
Jim Jeffries 03-01-2008, 11:53 PM And the funny thing is that Cobb had amazing chin yet he was dropped 3 times in the 1st round and stopped in the 1st round by Dee Collier.
I reckon all those punches from Shavers, Norton, Holmes, Dokes, even Douglas had an accumulative affect.
MissDeeCole 03-02-2008, 05:39 AM mike tysons chin was underrated, or better then people ever talked bout
