Not a chance in heaven.

At the current stage of Cotto's career, Duran was 60something-1, he dominated the lightweight division from 72 to 78, and he was soon going to fight Ray Leonard.

Cotto has yet to be the man in a division, and the closest thing to Leonard available to him is Mayweather.
There is a HUGE difference: Duran was smaller and older than Leonard, Cotto is bigger and younger than Mayweather.

To put it shortly, he did not do nearly as much as Duran did by now, and he doesnt even have the chance of doing more in the future.

If you don't want a smart ass answer, don't ask such a stupid question. How in gods name can you even begin to compare the two? What makes you think they are worth comparing?

Cotto is only comparable to Duran by being a pressure fighter. By having a slightly similar style. That is where the comparison ends though. Cotto simply has no comparable qualities in any part of his game that could be said to be as good as Duran was ... even in his late thirties! Defense = Duran, Offense = Duran, Boxing Skills = Duran, Smarts = Duran, Stamina = Duran......yada yada yada.

Stupid thread. :nonono:

Damn, thats too big a hill to climb. Duran was a beast top 3 ATG IMO. Cotto has to some super amazing **** to equal that. I mean that literally too. He'd have to clean up WW then like Duran (Duran skipped the lesser talented jrWW and went straight to WW) and skip jrMW and go straight to middle weigth and beat Pavlik, and possibly Taylor. He would then have to move up again and beat the best at either SMW or LW depending on which is the most talented division at the time.

Then I would consider him as great as Duran but I can't phathom that happening.

Not at all. It's very easy to tell.

1) He did not do what Duran did at his age.

2) He cannot do what Duran did later, for lack of comparable opposition.

Like everyone said previously, Cotto would have to do some unbelievable things down the stretch of his career to be considered in Duran's league. That being said, Cotto will not have the lengthy career, nor will he have the staying power that Duran had. I think that Cotto is a special fighter who has a ton of talent, but it'll be next to impossible for him to accomplish the same types of things that Roberto was able to accomplish in todays fight game.

This is correct. Rarely do fighters climb so high in weight and have as much success as Duran had against bigger men.

Why is this question even being asked? Cotto fights nothing like Duran and is not nearly as exciting. Cotto doesn't have the makings to go down as one of the greats. I think he'll end up in the same rankings as a De La hoya.

Yeah, but you know it's not just how great Duran was. Cotto could be the greatest fighter ever, and we would not know, because the challenges are not even there. If there was younger middleweight (or even junior middle, but a genuinely large one) version of Mayweather, I would say well maybe it could happen ...too bad the best fighter available for Cotto is unfortunately smaller and older than he is!

What is not exciting about Cotto?

Duran is one of the top 10 p4p fighters of all time maybe top 5 no Cotto does not have a hope of being regarded so high
