I was reading the book "leadbelly" and the main character of "underbelly".

Alphonso Gangitano. Apparently bashed Barry Michaels in a street fight. Barry admitted he was beaten savagely and the bashing cost him a second world title.

This Alphonso guy must have been very strong.

Not necessarily dude, Barry Michael was a super featherweight/lightweight, not exactly a big guy and the street is not a boxing ring, anything goes. If Gangitano got the first one in and made it count Barry would have been in a world of trouble.

I like Vince Colosimo though, he played the part really well. But if even half of that show is true Alphonse deserved everything he got, absolute scumbag. That scene in the sports club where he was bashing people at random was pretty disturbing, especially the chicks getting belted.

Gangitano was Lester Elllis' manager/bodyguard/advisor etc. Apparantly, Gangi, Lester and their people ran into Barry at 'Notorious' Bombay Rock Nightclub and Al and his crew beat the living suitcase out of him before Barry was suppose to fight severely breaking his nose which required multiple operations to fix ultimately costing Barry a World Title and the rest that comes with it. Gangitano was tough when he had 15 people to back him up. If he and Barry went one on one Barry would whoop him bad!

I wasn't aware Lester associated himself with those guys, my opinion of him just plummeted. For a professional fighter to do that to another pro on the street is just plain disgusting.

reading ellis' biography it seems like he has nothing but love and respect for michaels.. find it strange that that happened

It wasn't a one on one fight, it was Alphonse and three or four of his mates jumping him.

Didn't really like the second series, dropped it after a while. The first one was great and the third one was ok.

Its not bad, obviously not as good as the good yank shows, but its decent for Australian TV. Now that they are over I wouldn't suggest going back and watching them.

Yeah, the cops really didn't play that much of a role in the first Underbelly. It was less about the corruption of the force and more about the criminals themselves. The cops were in it more in the second and particularly the third series.
