Serious question.

I see series like oz and I see some sort of open cell system, is that what prissons are like in the states cause I have seen that on more series then just oz. But sometimes I also see prissons that looks worse then alcatraz... What's up with that?

I guess it depends. Some prisons are like country clubs. Others are hell on earth.

creed said it best. just depends what prison i guess. some are nice and open, some are 23 hour lock down with an hour to play, with mad cells. Some have dorms with 8 man cells, 20 man cells, some even go to 100 man cells. just depends on what prison it is, what you did, and what type of security you require due to your illegal action(s) performed.

If you go to prison in the states, expect to get raped.
If you don't get raped great, but don't walk in there thinking that
it can't happen to you. I don't care who you are, 5 guys can over power you and hold you down and take turns with you just like they could anyone else

The prisons are pretty good actually. It all depends on what you did and who you know. You live in a air conditioned facility with meals served to you. (maximum security). If you are in minimum security, you have no guards around and no fence. You can leave at any time but why whould you? You have all your meals and can wander about the 200 acre facility with no restrictions. The weight room is fully equipped and you can request any book or video/dvd that has ever been made. And it is all free.

Just like a lot of prison's have basketball courts. WHen u see OZ ur seeing a typical state prison. Far more violent than Federal. MAximum security prisons and Federal prisions may seem worse because they're closed cell and all the gaurds, but it's where'd i wanne go if i were going to prison. Suppose i'd ever killed someone, i'd steal a book of stmaps too just go to place were they wouldn't spread my rectum. State and local prisons are tough. Anyone i've talked to who's been there hates it. Even if you're not a racist or have any former affliation to gang ur prolly safer off joining one. I've been told, "doesn't matter if you're super man, you can fight off 10 guys trying to hold you down." Here in the states there's a program called scared straight, they take juvinal delinquints and give a sort of tour or orientation to the prison. Guess how many continued to be trouble... in the 20 years of the program, less then 2%. Prison has only gotten worse and keeps getting worse. The yreally should go back to the once old programs used in Europe and the South. Like castration, torture, working the guys to death. Most people who've been to prison hate it the most. Unfortunately, o nthe outside people are ignorant to the problems.


But i've always wondered, what are prisons in Europe like? Probably far less gay and violent and prolly better run? Are they made up of mostly foreigners? I'd be interested to know.

Some interesting states about Prison: 70% of those entered for rape are convicted of statutory rape, in msot cases consensual. Almost 50% has aids, only a small fractions enters w/ it. Prisons are 60% balck, 25% latino. The entire economic spectrum is covered, though they make up a majority, prisions are not overwhelmingly filled w/ poor.

Scared Straight did work for a while.

Until lawyers and parents who want to be rich tried to sue the state because their sons were scared ****less.

The majority of the prison system is like what you said but it is who you know and what you did that dictates where you go.

Depends on where you are in europe.... The more southern and eastern countries are not a good place to be in prisson. Complete ****holes there. Especially in the balkan countries and turkey. It is hell on earth there. Being stuck in a 10 men cell with a 100 people and only one toilet. Torture is a daily practice there.

When it comes to the more civiliced western countries, france, germany, england, holland etc. it is far better.
A normal prisson here in holland has a closed cell system. During the day you can leave your cell for 8 hours to work and one our air time outside. With the work you earn money (like $2,- a day) and with that money you can buy privilages such as a tv or radio in your cell. Everything you do good gets rewarded. If you behave good you only have to sit out 2/3 of your complete sentence. So if you are sentenced to 9 years in prisson and you behave propperly you are out in 6.
Ofcourse **** happens such as fights and rapes but the violence is more often between guards and prissoners then between prissoners themselves, but it does happen ofcourse.

The dutch prisson works good IMO. Higher or more painfull punishment often doesn't help. People that end up in prisson often lack social skills, they don't know what morals are etc.
In the dutch system you teach people that good things are rewarded and bad things are punished. If you work hard you get privilages. It's the same on the outside, when they come out and get a job they can buy a house etc and if they stay out of trouble then they won't have to come back. There is also a lot of counceling in prissons here to help people with their problems.

If you make prisson a hell on earth it doesn't help for ****. It only makes people who in there hate society even more and they commit crimes again. Also the argument that it scares people off is bull**** because nobody plans on getting caught when they commit a crime so they all assume they don't go to jail.

The US prisons are crowded. I dont think they should give sex offenders access to the court yard. lifting weights to get them stronger is not what they need. The US should also impose chemical castration.

Prison sounds like an unreal ****ing nightmare to me...I hope I never go.

I knew a lot of dudes that went to prison(My brother, Uncles, and mom's ex boyfriends) but I never asked them about because they will go on for hours about it.

Commiting a major felony as an immigrant would get that person deported, not thrown in jail. I have heard of people who were legal immigrant and were deported after commiting a major felony. Your statement couldn't be further away from the truth.
And even if you would considered all minorities as "immigrants", they don't even make 50% of the jails' population.
