Boyfriend Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting Baby
1:13 p.m. EDT May 23, 2003 - An Oakland County Circuit Court jury returned with a guilty verdict in less than one hour Friday in the case of a man accused of sexually assaulting a 16-month-old girl, Local 4 reported.
Robert Gibson, 25, was found guilty of criminal sexual assault on his girlfriend's daughter.
Gibson was babysitting the child while his girlfriend was at work. He apparently abused the girl during the four-hour period he spent with her. She was rushed to the hospital with a cut on her head, and nurses say there was blood under the girl's diaper.
Judge Langford Morris sentenced Gibson to 7 to 25 years in prison.
The victim's family told Local 4 that no prison sentence would do justice for the damage done to the child.
"We, the family of the victim, would like you to consider the brutality of the case, and that this was performed on a child that could not speak or defend herself," the girl's great grandmother told the courtroom.
Gibson testified that the child was injured when he kicked a football and it accidentally hit her, Local 4 reported.
Defense attorneys were reportedly pleased with Gibson's sentence, but they plan to appeal the conviction.
The 16-month-old was removed from her mother's care by protective services, but she told Local 4 she hopes to have her daughter back by her second birthday on June 12.
