Curly Howard 05-19-2003, 08:36 AM UFC 43: MELTDOWN TO OFFER 8-FIGHT, MEGA-STAR CARD LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW, FRIDAY, JUNE 6, IN LAS VEGAS, NEV.
Number One Light Heavyweight Contender Chuck Liddell To Fight Former Champ Randy Couture For Interim Light Heavyweight Title in Main Event
Ken Shamrock, Tank Abbott, Vitor Belfort Return To Octagon At Thomas & Mack Center In Ultimate Fighting Championship Action
LAS VEGAS, May 12, 2003…Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell (11-1-0 in mixed martial arts) of San Luis Obispo, Calif., the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s number one contender for its light heavyweight crown, will fight former UFC two-time heavyweight champ Randy Couture (7-4-0) of Portland, Ore., for the UFC interim light heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 43: Meltdown, LIVE on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EDT/7 p.m PDT from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The UFC, the world’s premier mixed martial arts sports association, will present an eight-fight, mega-star card that will include the return to the Octagon of UFC legend Ken Shamrock, power-punching knockout specialist Tank Abbott and Brazil’s top-ranked light heavyweight fighter Vitor Belfort.
Tickets, $300, $200, $100, $60 and $30, are on sale at the Thomas & Mack Center box office in Las Vegas, all all UNLV ticket outlets including the Galleria at Sunset, Meadows Mall, Boulevard Mall, all Station Casinos and Fiesta hotel/casinos and at www.unlvtickets.com. Tickets also may be ordered by telephone at 1-866-388-3267 toll free, or in Las Vegas at (702) 739-3267. Ticket purchases are subject to transaction fees. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is the host of the event and UFC fans can reserve rooms by calling 1-800-HRD ROCK or by visiting the website at www.hardrockhotel.com
UFC 43: Meltdown will be available LIVE on pay-per-view on iNDemand, DirecTV, Dish Network, Bell ExpressVu and Viewers Choice Canada. The suggested retail price is $29.95. A half-hour, free preview show that will feature a never before seen UFC fight will be televised by all cable operators starting at 9:30 p.m. EDT/6:30 p.m. PDT.
Couture will drop down a weight division to fight Liddell and the winner will become the UFC interim light heavyweight champion. The current champion Tito Ortiz is injured and is unable to return to the Octagon.
“Chuck earned his number one contender rank nine months ago and deserves a shot at the title. Since Tito can’t fight, Randy jumped at the opportunity to fight Chuck for the interim title. Randy already has made history as the only two-time heavyweight champion and now he wants to get into the record books again as the only guy to win UFC titles in two different weight divisions. It’s going to be an action-packed fight,” said Dana White, UFC president.
The legendary Shamrock, “The World’s Most Dangerous Man,” (8-5-2) from San Diego, Calif., returns to take on British heavyweight brawler Ian Freeman (13-6-0) of Sunderland, England. Shamrock feels he depleted himself cutting weight to fight in the light heavyweight division and wants to show he is still among the elite fighters in the world. Freeman is the U.K.’s top heavyweight.
“Tank” (8-8-0), another of the UFC’s most popular stars, will continue his return to the Octagon against another fan favorite, Kimo (7-3-1). Tank has administered some of the UFC’s most devastating knockouts and Kimo is the muscular Hawaiian known for his many tattoos and mysterious demeanor. Both now live in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Belfort “The Phenom” (10-3-0) from Rio de Janeiro, exploded on the UFC scene in February 1997 when he won a heavyweight tournament. He will meet Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman (5-2-0) of Las Vegas in a light heavyweight match. Belfort is a highly-skilled Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter with devastating punching ability. He knocked out Tank in 52 seconds and the destroyed the highly respected Vanderlei Silva in 44 seconds. Eastman is a dangerous kick boxer and wrestler with knockout power
Other featured fights on the all-star card include: Las Vegas heavyweight Frank Mir (5-1-0), who is one of the UFC’s rising young stars, will meet 6’10” Wes Sims (6-1-0) of Columbus, Ohio. Mir, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, won his first two UFC fights by arm bar submission in less than two minutes and just defeated Tank February 28 in 46 seconds by toehold submission. In Sims most recent fight, he won by technical knockout over Extreme Fighting Heavyweight Champion Marcus “Conan” Silvera and has not lost in six consecutive fights.
Matt Lindland (8-1-0) of Portland, Ore., one of the UFC’s top-ranked middleweights, will fight Falaniko Vitale (13-2-0) of Honolulu, Hawaii, in a middleweight bout. Lindland, who won the silver medal in wrestling for the U.S. Olympic team at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, is a superior wrestler with a ground and pound attack that is difficult for opponents to escape. Vitale is a freestyle fighter with excellent Brazilan jiu-jitsu and kick boxing skills who already owns victories over three UFC veterans, Aaron Riley, Todd Medina and Tyrone Roberts.
Veteran heavyweights Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (11-5-0) from Rio de Janeiro and Tre Telligman (15-3-0) of Ft. Worth, Tex., will hook up in a re-match of a close May 1999 fight won by Rizzo. Telligman, a Shamrock Lions Den teammate, is a well-rounded submission fighter with knockout power. In his last MMA fight, he defeated knockout artist Igor Vovchancyn. Rizzo is a professional kick boxer who is also one of the UFC’s most powerful strikers. He knocked out Tank in his UFC debut in October 1998 and has defeated some of its biggest names including Mark Coleman, Tsuyoshi Kosaka and Dan Severn.
In a lightweight match that promises to be action packed, Yves Edwards (11-5-1) of Houston, Tex., will meet undefeated Eddie Ruiz (7-0-0) of Huntington Beach. Edwards has fought all over the world and in his last UFC fight February 28 defeated Rich Clementi by rear naked choke submission at 4:06 of the first round. Ruiz, a Tank protégé, specializes in wrestling but is well rounded in striking, kicking and submissions.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), headquartered in Las Vegas, Nev., is the world’s premier mixed martial arts sports association. Owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC, the UFC programs six live pay-per-view events annually through cable and satellite providers. In addition to its North American pay-per-view distribution on iNDemand, DirecTV, Dish Network, Bell ExpressVu and Viewers Choice Canada, UFC events are distributed internationally through WOWOW, Inc. in Japan, Globosat in Brazil, Main Event Television in Australia and Sky Network Television in New Zealand. Zuffa, LLC licenses its UFC video games for distribution on all major playing platforms through Crave Entertainment and TDK Mediactive.
The UFC’s next live PPV event will be UFC 43: Meltdown at 10 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. PDT on Friday, June 6, from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The suggested retail price is $29.95. Look for the UFC on the internet at www.ufc.tv

Rock Dog 05-20-2003, 04:19 PM I agree w/ G-man. Liddel might have too muchon his hands in Randy Couture, but if anyone ca beat Randy at LHW it's Liddel.
Normally I'd say Shamrock would wipe the floor / a guy like Freeman, but Shamrock's a shell of his former self and I think Freeman's determinaton will bring him a win. Rizzo fight should be good, hopefully even better and longer han the last one. I say Rizzo will win, but w/ when comparing his latest performance to Tracy's it really could be Telligman by brutal ownage.
It's pointless to say, but UFC is making such a huge mistake not pitting Belfort against Shamrock.
