I got in there with some reservation because of the no. of bad reviews going around saying **** about it, but ****...that movie ****ing owned.
Firstly though, as is inherent with any "middle" movie of a continual trilogy (eg. original star wars...Die Hard isn't really a "continual" trilogy per se) there are going to be some shortcomings like not ending anything, knowing that the hero survives, **** like that.
There was also some scenes that I could really have done without - or done differently, for instance some of morpheus' speeches came off as a little "drama queen", and some of the fight scene stuff was a little rediculous (even with the consideration that this is the Matrix) to the point of being kinda cheesy looking.
Also, there are some parts that seem a little...confusing, not because of the anything other than the language and the speed at which it is spoken. One scene I am thinking about, right near the very end of the movie, a lot of what the guy said could and should have been said in much more simple english - it was philosophical stuff and I sure enjoyed the complexity of how the dude said it, and i understood it, but you really had to pay attention to his words.
I was like deciphering and understanding the meaning a few seconds after he said it - it's like listening to a 4th philosophy teacher preaching to a final year class.
There are also some logical gaps, such as the burly brawl scene (which was admittedly ****ing awesome) when after fighting for about 10 minutes with hundreds of Agent Smith's...neo flies off...why couldnt he do that at the start of the brawl?
Now onto the good ****...the movie's plot is not as straight forward as many seem to take it, it's loaded with a ****load of symbolism (just as the first movie - which many people also seemed to miss), twists and turns and developments which plain ****ing kickass. I honestly don't know if they will end the trilogy happily or not now, the machines stand a ****ing good chance of winning (in fact, I hope the machines ****ing win - that **** will be sweet).
The fight scenes are very ****ing good also, there are a couple of really crap karate style moments at the beginning of the film, but eventually, Yen Woo ping pumps up his creative juices and **** becomes insane. Sure its not realistic, but **** is it enjoyable to watch - much better than the first matrix.
The effects are ****ing insane. They are ****ing insane. I cannot believe how well the were utilised too, some of them were a little extrenuous, but ****, the special effects are ****ing amazing. Bullet time looks like absolute piss compared to the full realisation of Gaeta's virtual cinematography, and also blows into orbit anything dished out at the last star wars. The stand out part was the highway chase, that **** was off the hook.
The end of the movie was okay, but I really would have preferred it if they ended up a little earlier - namely when Neo had to make the ultimate choice between the two doors. The **** would have been cliffhanger - the way they ended it was a little anti-climatic.
But overall, ****ing good movie, not as groundbreaking as the first movie but a definite must see nevertheless.
