View Full Version : What do you guys think of the UFC bringing back.....
TuffGuy 05-15-2003, 05:34 AM What do you guys think of the UFC bringing back old veterans to face eachother? How do you feel about Kimo vs. Tank? Or Ken Shamrock still figting even though he didnt look on the same level as todays fighters?
I dont think this is a long term solution to the UFC being marketed right. It is a quick fix. Yea, we would all love to see Kimo fight Tank, but it just isnt the same as it would have been in 1995. Todays fighters are better then yesterdays fighters. You dont really think basketball players of the 70's would be as good if they were playing today? It is a different time.
The UFC needs to change how they market themselves. They need to market fighters not one or two single fighters. These are some of the reasons the UFC keeps having contract disputes. These older fighters come in and get paid more money then some of the new guys that are champions. I want to see a lightweight champion. I want to see a rematch of Genki Sudo vs. Duane Ludwig. Heck, we all want to see Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz. Hopefully the UFC will learn from there past mistakes and spend the mony where it needs to go to take them further. We want to keep this sport alive and growing. Some of Zuffa's acts have been questionable. Lets hope they do the right thing.
realkaps 05-15-2003, 06:09 AM By bringing in the old fighters from when UFC was very popular and selling 150,000 PPV's will make more people watch. The people who watch are getting to see the old guys but are also seeing these new guys they knew nothing about, so further down the road when they see a PPV coming up with Chuck Liddell or someone else fighting they will remember them from the PPV's with the old guys and buy it. I dont know if that makes sense or not.......

It makes sense for sure. I just dont agree with making these guys headline fighters. They are also promoting these guys over the new fighters. They are falling back on the past. what happens when these guys arent fighting anymore? I just think they are at a stand still when it comes to marketing. They should rely more on wht is gonna carry them into the future rather then what git them to the present.
Mr. Beelzebub 05-15-2003, 09:53 AM YOu have to understand that people like Tank might cater to a bigger audience. For example I have a lot of friends that don't follow MMA at all, but when I showed them that TAnk was fighting Frank Mir they were like: " Damn, isn't that that fight guy from WCW that used to dance in the ring with some ****?, Holy **** I wanna see him fight for real".
Even in Japan, Pride has used that same strategy bringing in pro-wrestlers like Takada, who was the Hulk Hogan of Japan to compete in Pride.
Even though, It might not be the best move for a sport that is moving forward, in the long run it brings more people and that helps.
Prince 05-15-2003, 11:27 AM i was hoping i'd never have to see tank fight or talk again, but unfortunately, he sells.
Squezze 05-15-2003, 12:38 PM No way was Takada the Hulk Hogan of Japanese wrestling. More like the Dallas Page or the Booker T of Japanese wrestling.
Mr. Beelzebub 05-15-2003, 12:50 PM OK then, I didn't mean to offend the WWE and Hulk Hogan fans out there. Takada was more the Booker T of Japanese Wrestling.
Who is the Hulk Hogan of Japan then?
Curly Howard 05-15-2003, 12:51 PM As long as we have shows like KOTC and UCC to see the new fighters I don't see anything wrong with using the older guys to draw a crowd...Besides I'm sure some of them could use a fat pay day. I did like the way that UFC 42 showed us some new blood. If they would just mix it up like that it would be O.K.

I'm not a WWE or a Hogan fan, but I have watched plenty of puroresu. If anybody is the "Hulk Hogan" of Japanese wrestling, it's gotta be Antonio Inoki. Or maybe Atsushi Onita, as far as being super popular with little wrestling skill.
purerockfury 05-15-2003, 02:58 PM i would like to the ufc put this match together miletich vs royce gracie that is a match i would like to see
ronnie dobbs 05-15-2003, 11:39 PM i would like to see mo smith vs. rizzo and tank vs. royce.
kcfman 05-16-2003, 02:28 AM I would like to see the "old veterans of the ufc" fight the "new breed" in special matches. (With the old rules and not what they are fighting with now). It can be done. As long as they make sure that the fights are "special". Not going for any current belt or something. IMO
miller8966 05-16-2003, 02:33 AM that would be cool kfc.
kcfman 05-16-2003, 02:51 AM It would be cool! Now I am just speaking of one fight for this "special". But can you imagine if they implement the old rules and have the same type of tournament like multiple fights in one night! How many current champions would be able to handle and still be champion at the end of the night? Food for thought!

That is what im talking about.
Let em fight,
But dont work them in the running for a belt, UNLESS of course they are willing to make a run in the division. - like Tank if he woulda won vs Mir, then we might see him move up the ranks.
But having Ken Samrock fighting for the title was bogus.
