He's Bill the Butcher, one of the most compelling characters I ever saw on film - very evil, has a glass eyeball that he taps with a knife, very racist and amazingly charismatic.

oh, he's an important "enforcer" in politics during new york's corrupt tammany hall era, and based on a real character, called Bill Cutting I believe.

His name is Bill Poole the character he is based on.

History records him as a butcher by trade, a bit of a streetfighter and he might have maimed a few people, but no confirmed kills apparently...

he apparently was a butcher yep - you should see him in the film, cutting up meat leaf right and centre - he even shows a young Amsterdam Vallon (the hero) how to fight with a knife on a gutted strung up pig (which he believes has the closes skin to a human).
