black.ink 01-05-2008, 12:47 PM This is a lot harder then you might think......but i would like to see everyones list of greatest rappers in order (if you can) just to get a taste of what flavours people are bringin' to this board.

Its not easy man....like i said, ask me next week and the list will probably be different.
Kurupt would have been on there, but Ice Cube grabbed my 20th place. Better lyricist, more consistent and his old skool aggresive flow takes some to beat him. (well 19 other rappers from what my list tells me)
This is a 'favourite' list....not 'Greatest rappers' list. Tupac and Eminem would no doubt be on anyones list of greats......but not favourites of mine.

The first five are in exact order for me, the rest, change from mood to mood. Nonetheless, close as I'll get to narrowing it down.
The criteria of this list is a combination of lyricall skill, microphone presence and mpact on Hip Hop (Respect to Tupac as an artist but never really felt him so I have no idea where i would put him on a list like this).
1) Rakim
2) Nas
3) Big Daddy Kane

Even if you was never into Tupac's music to have 'impact on hip hop' as one of the criterias to get on your list and then not have Tupac in the top 20 is really bad.
Like his music or not he is the most influential hip hop artist of all time.

I think if i were to argue that pac didn't belong on a list like this that would be bad. I wouldn't have a problem with someone putting Pac anywhere on the list I gave accept for over Rakim. My point was that I don't personally know WHERE to put him and so if i don't know where to put him, how do I include him? Do I just put him off to the side? But that is sort of what i did by writing the disclaimer before my list.
As for pac being the most influential rapper of all time, i suppose it depends on what you mean by that. If you mean global influence (People listening to him in China and Russia and stuff like that) o.k. probably, but that wasn't the kind of influence i was talking about. Now if you meant influence in the sense that i said i did: influence within Hip Hop I think that is incorrect to say that pac was the most influential rapper in history. Pac dosen't even break the top 5 for influence in Hip Hop.
Honestly though, there is certainly truth to what your saying about my list in general. I've always known that Pac was the big hurdle for me in making lists like this. I admit that it's incomplete.

Another thing that's tough for me is whether to give the three spot to Biggie or Kane. lyrics or influence? To tell you the truth I go back and forth, Big had that number 3 spot not too long ago and he'll probably get it again soon :lol1:.

What a joke!!!!!
Is somebody a tad bias towards rappers from the south??
ERRMM. I think so!!
This is absolute DOG ****!! The fact that you have soulja boy on the list means I will no longer EVER pay attention to anything you have to say about hip hop after this post. When you have a list for the top 20 MCs and somebody (you) makes a list and the likes of Rakim, Nas, 2pac, Biggie and Jay Z are nowhere to be seen it just shows you have NO idea what you're talking about. The 5 I mentioned should be in most peoples top 10 somewhere but you don't even have them on your list AT ALL!! NOT A SINGLE ONE!!! Yet you have names like Trick Daddy, T.I, and Soulja Boy on there.
If you are serious and do love Hip Hop then please do me a favour and just broaden your outlook because with you being so into the south you're missing out on so much.

Backspins to windmill, who's still the gin drinker
Ill thinker - explodin when the paper hits the ink, uhh

The condoms is a problem from the AIDS gettin sprayed
Diseases, Big pleases, MC's across the seas

I'm crazy and deranged
Blowin *****z out the frame, simple and plain
But gettin back, to the black, rhinocerous of rap

Yeah I said something similar about jay Z and Pac but he never responds to that particular argument. Jay Z and Pac are all time best selling artists of American music period, regardless of genre, but some how, Lil Ke Ke made it and they didn't.

Oh, Tuggers (and anyone else interested0 maybe i should clarify myself a little bit about what I mean when I say "influence within Hip Hop". This is actually a talent category. In order to have an influence within Hip Hop you had to have been an innovator within Hip Hop. That is the only way you have a strong influence INSIDE of it, as a culture, not a business. It takes more talent to innovate something and use it then it takes to just use something that someone else innovates. That is exactly why I say it is a talent category. As for global influence that is something completely different, i don't factor that in because i'm not sure what fame tells you about how great a rapper someone is. I mean M.C. hammer's global fame and influence would make him atleast third or fourth in that area. However what does that say about whether or not he should be put on a list like this?

He should be on everybodys list. He's so underrated its a joke. Has got one of the best flows ive ever heard in my life.
Kobe Bryant 01-09-2008, 10:25 AM Pac had influence. Notice how everybody tried to imitae how he did his hooks for a while. And also his work ethic. Look at all these mixtape rappers. And take Wayne for example they have **** loads of material that is being released. Pac had so much material that all these other rappers started grindin harder.

THe TRiNiTY 01-09-2008, 11:04 AM C-Drone & RES: Souja Boy's two radio hits (Superman & Souja Girl) have and will continue to sell more that any one hit wonder ever, in History, except for a Michael Jackson hit...Vanilla Ice, Hammer, Pac nor Jay has had a HIT to product the rave that Superman has...It will be played for years to come...Everyone in America is still trying to learn the Superman dance..People mastered the running man & typewriter that Hammer and Ice did in seconds..You don't see Dave Lederman, Jimmy Kimble, Leno or Carson Daily doing the damn running man..But they all brought that young cat on their show to learn the Superman..Its a rave that all races, backgrounds, classes and ages want to learn...So Superman that hoe!!!

Yeah.. You keep thinking that Soulja Boy is a good rapper. And I'll keep laughing.
He's not the biggest one hit wonder, either. By the way. Maybe in terms of ringtones, but he's breakin' NO records in that debartment, either. Plus, essentially, in the grand scheme of things, his album bricked. For example, Chamillionaire, a REAL rapper, has sold more ringtones. Jay-Z, a real rapper, has sold more albums. So, he's done nothing impressive.
By the way, they didn't need some piece of **** dance to do either of those things.

Ummm I think you should have ended with your "number of units sold" argument. Once you got into "a hit to produce the rave that superman has" you got waaay off track. Listen to me. No single rap song has ever, had the mainstream popularity that M.C. Hammer's song U Can't Touch this had. Almost all of M.C. Hammer's mainstream fame rested upon that song and M.C. Hammer in his prime was more famous than any other rapper has ever been in their prime, including P Diddy and Jay Z. You could go into a senior citizens home in the early 90's and they would know who M.C. Hammer was. i think I need to find you a Time machine because comparing Superman to U can't Touch This as a cultural sensation is a joke. I know so many people (mostly older ofcourse) that don't know the song Superman that's it's not even funny. Infact if you went on the street (in a non all Black neighborhood which represents the general public) and asked random middle aged people whether they knew that song you would get "no's" all over the place. If you did the same thing with song U can't Touch This by m.c. hammer, even now, 18 YEARS later you would get the opposite result. You think Superman will last 18 years? HAHAHA, trust me it won't even last five; especially considering the rate at which the South is cranking out new dance hits. Oh and if you want to compare sales you have to put things in perspective to get the math right. There were 50 million fewer people in this country alone when Hammer was big.

He will be the alltime One Hit Wonder of the world..Superman will give him that title. Souja Girl is getting radio play off that hype..

I would have to disagree with you RES...Superman has only been out you 1 year or so and you still hear it with the hottest song on the radio playlist, not to mention it was voted the 1 video of the year..In the years to come, people will still be trying to learn the damn Superman. I don't know where the hell you stay but everybody and their mamma is doing this young cats dance..My nephew is 2yrs old and he knows the track and dance.....I'll stop here but trust me when I say time will tell..

I flipped my lid BIG TIME! haha
Nobody leaves Biggie, Pac and Nas out of a top 20 GOAT list and gets away with it when I'm around.
Come on then Rosewood, show us your real list.
and PLEASE don't put Lil Wayne at the top.

Where i am is somewhere where there are not just Black folks from the South. I am in New York City, (the most diverse city in the world) and see every ethnicity, the full picture of the country. Nice that it got video of the year but that's far from the TWO GRAMMIES that Hammer's U can't Touch This got. Superman can't begin to come close to the number of people that recognize that song in every type of neighborhood, among all ethnicities, no matter how old...and it's 18 years later!

I agree about Fab being underrated. He reminds me of Method Man. So much skill on the mic and potential but never really made it big the way he should have. Same goes for Pharoahe Monch

Fab needs to do more with his flow, not just throw out punchlines, even though their good punchlines.

I agree!!! Fab has done the different flavor of music but still his voice is at the same tone over and over...
Kobe Bryant 01-10-2008, 11:03 AM Fab is nice on the mic. His new album he did things a little differently. He balanced out the album this time around. It's the only Fab album I ever really liked. But his punches are dope without a doubt. Just go through his mixtapes if you wanna hear straight heat throughout.
