View Full Version : Liddell Decisions Silva, St. Pierre Makes Hughes Tap
rawtyson 12-30-2007, 12:01 AM ok so I was watching chuck liddel vs silva ... wow so i heard this was gonna be a good fight, jesus did it suck. wtf is up with this ufc bullshit 3x5 min rounds, these dudes are gassed out at like the 2nd round.... they are just throwing slow unaccurate punches.. wow and this is the fad that is killing boxing alright LOL
Texanballer 12-30-2007, 12:03 AM It was a good fight, but it was like a boxing fight. It was great i loved it, but it was like barrera-morales but with punching skills
rawtyson 12-30-2007, 12:04 AM joe rogan goes " this fight was in the making for 6 years" LOL
mrpain81 12-30-2007, 12:05 AM It looked like a toughman fight, the boxing skillz they had were pretty bad.
Looked like the two bums fighting on FNF last night.
bishop2006 12-30-2007, 12:06 AM ok so I was watching chuck liddel vs silva ... wow so i heard this was gonna be a good fight, jesus did it suck. wtf is up with this ufc bullshit 3x5 min rounds, these dudes are gassed out at like the 2nd round.... they are just throwing slow unaccurate punches.. wow and this is the fad that is killing boxing alright LOL
U just beat me to it,i was gna make a thread about this
three 5 minute rounds? Cumon man! Chuck Liddel was gassed by the 2nd,in the 3rd he totaly punched himself out,he was actually blatently looking up at the clock to see how many minutes hes got left,he did this three times, how are u gna get tired by the 2nd round? Marquez and Vazquez,Pavlik-Miranda fought at a much higher pace for more rounds, and didnt look half as tired as these guys
Another thing is,i didnt see these guys use any MMA,all i seen was the often kick, the rest was a boxing match, even the commentator said " THIS IS A WILD BOXING FIGHT " Chuck actually looked scared when he was being attacked
I didnt find it boring,it was good, but UFC skillwise cant compete with boxing, boxers are much better conditioned
RunW/Knives 12-30-2007, 12:06 AM The second round of Lidell/Silva might be one of........if not the best single round of MMA I've ever seen as long as I've watched it.
Sure there are exciting others with nobodies...........but those fights don't mean anything like this one did and on the big stage they ****ing tore it up.
Two of the greatest Mixed Martial Artists of all time, End of Story.

blockhead 12-30-2007, 12:11 AM It's gurrreat.
what do you think for this fight?
hughes or french canadian george?
RunW/Knives 12-30-2007, 12:11 AM Chuck is the greatest Redneck to have ever thrown a punch.

I was reading the play by play on Sherdog and it sounds like it was an amazing fight, especially round 2.
Major props to these 2 fearless warriors :hail:
Chuck Liddell is back baby :)
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:12 AM Those 2 are 31 and 38 respectively. Amazingly Silva, the 31 one is more shot than chuck. He lost of course. If chuck wasn't 38 he woul have finished Silva. Mark Hunt finished Silva's career a long time ago back in Pride. Ultimately Pride killed Silva making him fight heavyweights. He was the longest reigning middleweight champion in Pride's history. I think the japanese wanted revenge so they started making crazy matchups that ****ed Silva good. He's slow, doesn't really have head movement, swings widely... More shot than Castillo was vs Hatton by a long time. More shot than James Toney ever been.
RunW/Knives 12-30-2007, 12:12 AM what do you think for this fight?
hughes or french canadian george?
Yeah...........Hughes. He'll re establish with his wrestling why he's the man.
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:16 AM Next fight features another shot fighter vs a decent to good fighter. Mat hughes is shot, GSP isn't and you'll see that in the fight.
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:18 AM GSP has that Jean Claude Vandamme aura around him... The accent is identical and he is as fit as the actor was when he made Bloosport..
mrpain81 12-30-2007, 12:20 AM GSP is wearing the some gay ass shorts.
blockhead 12-30-2007, 12:20 AM Yeah...........Hughes. He'll re establish with his wrestling why he's the man.
your on i have canadian george
TheGreatA 12-30-2007, 12:20 AM Awesome fight. I thought someone was gonna get knocked out every time they threw a punch.
It's not something you'll watch if you want to see textbook boxing but if you want to see a slugfest these two deliver.
I was off on my prediction but I always thought prime vs prime Liddell would win because of his style and height.
I guess you could say past prime vs past prime the same thing happened.

yeah dude that fight was the shit for sure.
SkillspayBills 12-30-2007, 12:26 AM Who won between Chuck and Wanderlei?
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:27 AM I dnt understand wrestlers. whats the deal with take downs? Matt was "down" with GSP who's not even a wrestler and he was beaten silly! Jesus just take wrestlers out of mma. What they do? Hold close? Slam you around the ring? Jesus... round 2 now
mrpain81 12-30-2007, 12:28 AM Chuck Decision 3 rounds, it was a good fight.
But both guys started gassing in the 2 round, both looked shot.
blockhead 12-30-2007, 12:31 AM how about that!!!!!!!!!!!
TheGreatA 12-30-2007, 12:31 AM Don't like it, don't watch it. You expected to see some boxing skills in a MMA match? It's called MMA for a reason. Watch boxing if you want to see boxing.
It was supposed to be a slugfest and that's exactly what it was. Two guys with zero defence all on the offensive. Good fight if you can appreciate fights like that.
Both are probably shot but it was a nice fight and a nice memory.
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:33 AM Matt Hughes completely i mean completely OWNED! He was even submited! A wrestler submited. By a kickboxer.
Texanballer 12-30-2007, 12:33 AM GSP with a submission. It was a tactical wrestling match on the ground
RunW/Knives 12-30-2007, 12:37 AM Whew. Well I think it's clear who the man is now.
Good god.
SkillspayBills 12-30-2007, 12:43 AM GSP with a submission. It was a tactical wrestling match on the ground
Sub'd him with what? An armbar? Kimura? Go go? Oma?
blockhead 12-30-2007, 12:43 AM Whew. Well I think it's clear who the man is now.
Good god.
seriously dude that shit was nasty.
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:44 AM You call that a match i call that total domination. Still i dunno the deal with american wrestling school. Apparently it focus too much on hold men close and too little on actually finishing moves as opposed to brazilian jujitsu or what GSP did. I'm mad cuz Matt is a good guy and he could have done better if he worked on effectiveness rather than wasting half of the first round trying to get the takedown to get owned once he got it.
Allucard 12-30-2007, 12:44 AM Sub'd him with what? An armbar? Kimura? Go go? Oma?
armbar sub
mrpain81 12-30-2007, 12:44 AM Don't like it, don't watch it. You expected to see some boxing skills in a MMA match? It's called MMA for a reason. Watch boxing if you want to see boxing.

I thought the fight was good, Its just the build up by Rogan and Goldy saying how these are two of the best "Strikers" in MMA. It was pretty much a "Wild Boxing Match" like Rogan said, It was exciting. But if you saw Friday night fights last night, two bums also went toe to toe for about 4 rounds.
I really like MMA, but I liked the GSP vs Hughes fight better because of the great skillz GSP showed. He's a true MMA fighter with all around skill, really great to watch. Just next time please dont wear those shorts.
TheGreatA 12-30-2007, 12:48 AM It was still awesome to see two guys who had just been knocked out in their last fights slug it out like nothing mattered.
The skill level was pretty much awful (though I loved Wanderlei's bob&weave that was pretty funny) but you don't see stuff like that too much, it had pretty much everything a wild slugfest can have except a knockout.
I did laugh at the hype their striking skills got.
And Hughes was completely dominated. Serra probably laughed his ass off at that fight but then realized he would have to fight that beast again.
mrpain81 12-30-2007, 12:53 AM It was funny because when Wand did that Head movement while his back was to the cage, Liddell missed every single punch. It was like 5 punches he missed, that was awsome.
I"d like to see Soko fight Liddell now :)
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 12:56 AM seriously dude that shit was nasty.so true, so true
blockhead 12-30-2007, 12:57 AM so true, so true
your karma bar looks better now
TheGreatA 12-30-2007, 12:58 AM Sokoudjou got owned too though I knew he was going to. Machida should fight someone like Jardine or Shogun now, he isn't the most entertaining guy around but he has beaten every single fighter they've put in front of him.
Soko has the power and speed to handle someone like Chuck but Soko did get beat by Chuck's student Glover Texeira. I don't think he can take a punch too well.
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 01:02 AM The reason they gas easily is because it's not a boxing fight, they have to actually have an overall fight and not a not a bounce around the ring jab jab jab. I agree though, they could have been better. Wanderlei looked like he was 40 years old. Even so, he did take all that Chuck could deliver. The UFC needs to learn from Pride and boxing; it needs to make a better product.
AndersonSilva 12-30-2007, 01:03 AM wow so many mma haters fuk u bychesss
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 01:04 AM Sok was all hype. Chuck will be fighting for the belt next considering Wand has two victories over Rampage.
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 01:06 AM wow so many mma haters fuk u bychesss
No, dude, I like MMA. I just think more can be done.
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 01:07 AM haha, thanks dude
TBEC2 12-30-2007, 01:09 AM GSP has that Jean Claude Vandamme aura around him... The accent is identical and he is as fit as the actor was when he made Bloosport..
LMAO i totally agree, i respect the mans skills as a fighter but i find him very annoying for that very reason lol.
Hughes got owned GSP looked amazing, but in Serra's defense his striking ability is "WAY" better than Hughes and on his back he will be alot more active than Hughes with his Bjj skills. Hughes is a great fighter but cant do much of anything unless he is on top of his opponent.
RunW/Knives 12-30-2007, 01:09 AM Seriously, I thought Hughes stood a chance, and I thought the fight would go to the ground for a long time and he'd just grind away. So yeah he just flat out got his ass beat, and it's clear who the better fighter is between the two.
I don't know about the whole washed up thing as far as Hughes is concerned.......I just wasn't aware despite the last fight as to how good GSP was. By demolishing Hughes twice that's made clear.
TheGreatA 12-30-2007, 01:09 AM I think it was already confirmed that Forrest would be the next one to fight Rampage for the belt.
Palma 12-30-2007, 01:49 AM Chuck was awesome tonight and it was a treat to actually see him shoot on someone. I guess he does have some wrestling skills after all. Speaking of wrestling!, GSP just beat Huges at his own game. Does anyone know if GSP qualified for the Candadian Olympic team?
blockhead 12-30-2007, 01:51 AM Chuck was awesome tonight and it was a treat to actually see him shoot on someone. I guess he does have some wrestling skills after all. Speaking of wrestling!, GSP just beat Huges at his own game. Does anyone know if GSP qualified for the Candadian Olympic team?
i think he was going to try but it would be a bit silly at this point.
he was rediculous though huh?
1bad65 12-30-2007, 01:51 AM Speaking of wrestling!, GSP just beat Huges at his own game. Does anyone know if GSP qualified for the Candadian Olympic team?
That takedown right before the submission was a Judo throw, not a wrestling takedown.
BIGPOPPAPUMP 12-30-2007, 02:00 AM LAS VEGAS - Georges St. Pierre dominated Matt Hughes and won by a verbal tap-out in the second round to take the UFC interim welterweight title Saturday night at UFC 79. [details (http://www.boxingscene.com/mma/?m=show&id=909)]
blockhead 12-30-2007, 02:01 AM That takedown right before the submission was a Judo throw, not a wrestling takedown.
good eye, but in reality it was both.
robot_monkey 12-30-2007, 02:17 AM Chuck was awesome tonight and it was a treat to actually see him shoot on someone. I guess he does have some wrestling skills after all. Speaking of wrestling!, GSP just beat Huges at his own game. Does anyone know if GSP qualified for the Candadian Olympic team?Yeah, but I don't think he could even hold water down.
Bahamut Zero 12-30-2007, 03:01 AM Props to Liddell! But I can't imagine Chuck beating Wandy who f*cked Rampage twice who sodomized the Iceman twice?!
You call that style match ups?
Azteca 12-30-2007, 04:54 AM Damn, I got major respect for Lidell after tonight. He actually showed some skills against a decent striker. It wasn't like he was fighting a wrestler turned striekr or a BJJ guy turned striker.
He's for real. Sick fight.
And pierre totally whooped Hughes ass. He has some sick training partners.
1bad65 12-30-2007, 10:45 AM Matt Hughes completely i mean completely OWNED! He was even submited! A wrestler submited. By a kickboxer.
St Pierre is a Brown Belt in BJJ. He is also very good on his feet. It's why the sport is called Mixed Martial Arts.
If you really want to see St Pierre absolutely dominate someone on the ground, watch his fight vs Frank Trigg. And St Pierre was a Purple Belt when he fought Trigg.
1bad65 12-30-2007, 10:48 AM And pierre totally whooped Hughes ass. He has some sick training partners.
Not sure if does now, but he has trained BJJ at Renzo's in the past. :)

yeah, liddell looked a bit different going for the take downs and the spinning back fist. that was an exciting fight, i couldnt sit still. silva took a lot of punishment, im surprised the fight wasnt finished by liddell. i wonder who will be next for chuck?
i like silva, he shows respect for his opponent. guys like clemente and machida kind of piss me off with the comments.
st pierre dominated hughes, making hughes look like it was his octagon debut. gsp is one of the most well rounded fighters. hughes day may very well be over, though i still want serra/hughes.
did anyone see gsp's corner pour water all over his legs right before he went out for the second round? wtf?
Azteca 12-30-2007, 01:03 PM Great ****ing fight...Chuck is actually an accurate counterpuncher (he has some okay standup skills for an MMA fighter) but Silva's punches were all wide, looping and innacurate. Hardly a boxing clinic AT ALL and not much skill shown.
But it was a great fight.
furniture'R'us 12-30-2007, 02:46 PM Lyoto would absolutely dominate Forrest Griffin.
Rampage is a good fight for him because he is active and a banger. Rampage can take him down.
But if it turns into a thinking mans fight, Lyoto would beat him. He's for real.
Kind of a twat, though.
eazy_mas 12-30-2007, 03:19 PM Chuck is the greatest Redneck to have ever thrown a punch.
I though Chuck Norris was the greatest redneck to ever throw a punch but for kick he get it
ScrewasideMMA 12-30-2007, 04:47 PM I can understand showing love for Chuck on the victory, but come on. This guy was custom built to fight for Chuck. Wandy's biggest asset is going inside thai clinch then unload with knees. Chuck's elusiveness plus the fact he had a reach advantage never allowed Wandy to use his greatest assets thus leaving him with his wild ass haymakers consistantly being short and off target. Don't make this out to be more than what it was. Silva had a great run in Pride but was coming off two losses. Guys had seemingly already figured his game out and knew what to do with him. A fight where Chuck's got the height and reach advantage plus knowing if it did go to the ground he had the advantage? That's like Chuck's dream opponant. Silva showed heart but I wasn't impressed with Chuck in this one at all especially being gassed after 2.5 rounds.
ScrewasideMMA - are you pissin' people off yet.
this is my guy red, he is very knowledgeable about pro mma and it's history. he's a good friend of mine - and one i beat down occasionally as well! :biggthump
so listen to what he says. and if you don't like what he says, you can always PM me to take care of business.:D
Yeah...........Hughes. He'll re establish with his wrestling why he's the man.
Hughes looks like he's lost the desire. He showed no agression and was simply overwhlemed by the younger, hungrier and more skilled fighter. Sure we can say it was simply One Fight, but this was actually the third fight where GSP was either completely dominant or was very competitive against Hughes.
The most telling moment was that final takedown, which was a white belt level Judo move that required GSP to completely move his balance to get into position, which Hughes didn't take advantage of. Not exactly the look of a guy that can now "re-establish his wrestling". The fire has left his belly.
This is a good post. I agree that Serra is more of a threat to GSP, not becuase of the mental edge he has from KOing George, but simply because Serra can take advantage of George's habit of continually dropping his left hand and leaving himself WIDE open to a right hand from Serra. Take a look at the Penn-GSP fight and you'll also see George getting tagges by Penn's right hand due to poor defense.
However, a motivated and smarter GSP could easily stay on the outside and make Serra come to him, which would allow him to better "see" whats coming and then allow him to clinch more cleanly, with reduced threat of a short right hand landing.
Then, I expect GSP's ground game will surprise Serra. Who will not be able to keep up with the pace that the younger and hungier guy will impose.
Blair_Wells#32 01-04-2008, 02:28 AM i stil have 2 disagree in this one 2, i think Wanderlei actualy won....after watching all 3 rounds closeley.

Maybe you watched it with a cut over an eye that was also nearly shut due to swelling, like Silva?
All kidding aside, I can't understand how anybody could find a Silva win, expecially since it was a standup fight with Chuck clearly outlanding Silva.
Prince Sayeed 01-04-2008, 01:47 PM Wandy got what he asked for. Chuck ****ed him.
