View Full Version : Tyson's career
GhostInMachines 12-26-2007, 09:31 PM I know that Tyson was 19-20 years old weighing in at about 220lbs, and that he fought in the heavyweight division in the '86 olympics. I looked him up on wikipedia first so i wouldnt have to ask on here, but besides what I said, they really didnt mention his weight at all. But anyways, do you guys know how big he was when he started training at around 13 or so and if he was already big in his mid teens or before he went pro? Lol i doubt anyone knows how big he would be at 13 but i was just wondering if he was physically intimidating as a young kid as well, or if he beefed up for boxing.
Benny Leonard 12-26-2007, 10:09 PM I've heard the first picture with Cus, where he is sitting, at the beginning, is Tyson at 13 after losing a bit of weight from when they first got him. They also use the pic in a lot of documentaries as him when he was 13. Still not sure. I think Atlas put him around 190-200 pounds at least by 13/14. Tyson's weight could have fluctuated a bit based on how much he ate and trained. One thing is sure, he was known as a big kid and with a big head. He should be so lucky that his body filled out to match his head size, which even at 215 looked big.

I'm sure you can find out on BoxingScene. There are posters out there that know more about Tyson than probably Tyson, so it is better to ask them but my post should ease your mind a bit until somebody corrects me with exact.
Plus, there are some of his amateur fights on Youtube.

Which is why they took him in, besides the speed, power and aggression he displayed.
I've also heard (especially when he was pro) that they wanted to keep him in shape (besides keeping him out of trouble) because he could balloon up in weight fast. Although, letting your weight balloon up a ton and then stripping off the weight is an Old School method perfected by Old time bodybuilder John Grimek to put on muscle-weight fast instead of trying to increase while lean.

yea reading up on him some more, cus said he was a 'fine physical specimen' or something like that along with the anger they knew he was a diamond in the rough.
like what you said, over the summer from may to august i went from 155 to 205, you know i ballooned real fast and want to keep getting bigger, and i was asking a few weeks ago if i should hold off on the cardio so i dont get too lean. it was interpreted as a turning fat into muscle question so i got hosed kind of, i know obv. u cant do that, but now i should try and get as bulky as i can before i get more cut?
Benny Leonard 12-26-2007, 10:53 PM People make a big deal about the weight of modern Heavyweights. Tyson at 5'11, 215-220 in his prime was very similar to a fighter that fought Jack Johnson. At 18-20 years of age, he was basically the same height and weight as Tyson.

It really depends what you are trying to do. Is it for sports or just for life in general?
Many things go into it, age, frame size, genetics, etc.
There are many ways to bulk up and stay within a good range for muscle vs. fat.
You can stick with sprints since they will cut fat fast and actually add muscle if you are eating properly. Also, Power lifts specifically will add bulk.
But again, it really depends what you are doing it for.
I know someone that plays sports in college, adds mucle weight fast, and stays lean, all while staying away from all supplements, including protein shakes since the coach is tough on taking anything because of the drug testing is strict. Of course this person also has great genetics.

im only 20 and i would say i have pretty good genetics(lol when have you heard someone say that about themselves)well idk ive never had trouble staying in shape i mean and i was stronger in highschool then some kids who work out all the time... and ive always had natural talent with sparring and stuff like that going back to taking karate as a little kid. i have really good metabolism so the fat just comes off, but im just worried im gonna be real skinny again. im boxing now and playing basketball every once in awhile. i guess in about a year or sometime during 08 i could have my first fight in the ring.
this is stupid but im growing into it, but i always had a big head. thats another reason. when i see that pic of tyson as a kid it reminds me of myself.ppl say its not bad or noticeable now but back when i was younger u no how it is u swear ur head was the same size as it is now but ur body just grew. i want to fit more into my frame and be able to throw down as a heavyweight.

You have to figure out what weight you would want to fight at, which will be based on your body-frame, which you could discuss with a good trainer, as well as talking about nutrition. The key is to read, ask questions and listen. You have to find the right foods for you as well since the body reacts differently for everyone with the foods you ingest. Eating the right foods as well as eating at the right time is also important. You should find out what you are allergic to as well. Some are allergic to eggs, wheat, milk, etc.
Also, at 20, you are possibly still filling out and will continue to do so into your 20's, which includes becoming stronger.

ive fought as a teen in the 155-160 range, and i was pretty quick. now im back and i think im just as fast but i burn out faster, but i hit real hard now. i want to gain more muscle but lose some fat so i think ill stay at around 210ish.

The best thing to do is find a good trainer, so good luck with that one. A good trainer will know best where you should be and you would know based on how you feel and perform.
If you burn out fast, you need to cut the weight and increase the cardio/training. No stamina = sleepy time.
And lastly, let us not forget skill is essential.

It's about being effective with your body.
What does your trainer say about the weight?
Remember, Hopkins came in as a Light-heavyweight, but his trainer found it better for him to trim down to Middle...the rest is history. You have to find a weight, a trim weight, where your body will be great at, even have advantages if possible. Depending on your height and how thick your frame is, Light-heavyweight-Cruiserweight might be good for you but this is without me seeing you so you would obviously know better. I would try to lose the fat now but not to fast where you sacrifice valuable muscle. It would be best to see your abs unless you are James Toney who can get away with it.

well i have alot better chance of suceeding in kickboxing then boxing. since ive done karate for a long time it helps. what my trainer likes is that i can just throw up roundhouses really fast and most of his black belts still get wacked in the head. its mainly because my old style didnt teach me to properly pivot the hip, so you dont see me rotate my weight. ive fixed it though and its prob the best weapon i have. if he notices this slowing down he'll recommend i lose weight, but hes already pissed i get tired faster.
your very right im alot better off being a quick middle weight, especially when i get older cause i wanna be in shape in my 30s and 40s not some powerhouse fat ass. that is just a problem waiting to happen

so tyson was big as a kid, was he violent and getting into lots of fights? i wasnt sure and didnt know if fame had made him real testy and on edge or if he was always like that.
them_apples 12-27-2007, 03:47 AM Tyson had 38 criminal conviction by the age of 14 (give or take a few)
There are many ghetto stories circulating about him, but one thing is for sure he was always fighting ever since the day he came out of the womb.

The Iron Man 01-02-2008, 11:53 AM An Extract From a Biography By Peter Heller :

He was Born in 66 so in 79 he would have been 13, the book goes on to say in 1980 at 13 1/2 Tyson Weighed 210 and Rooney didnt believe he was only of that age. There were no other fighters in the gym at that weight so he sparred with Stewart Who was 180lbs
