View Full Version : jab to the body
SpeedKillz 12-20-2007, 08:39 AM had a fight this weekend, it was a last minute kinda thing and i weighed in fine so it was all good. anyway, it was probly the easiest fight i ever had. this dude was throwin straight up bombs in every round, no skill, all i was doin was slippin and weavin and hittin him with the jab to the body. singles, doubles, triples, and sometimes 4 at a time. guy had ZERO defense for the jab to the body. i swear to god for the first 2 rounds, i probly threw like 3 or 4 right hands, and maybe 2 hooks. EVERYTHING was a jab. in the third round i kept jabbin to his body again and landed a regular right hand to the sternum, not even all that strong, and he fell down and when he got up he quit.
so, point of thread, if ur not utilizing the jab to the body, start utilizing that ****. i never used it that much, but my trainer keeps hollaring at me in the gym to use it, and this weekend proves how good it really is. if u got a good jabbin hand, u can really break someone down by goin to the body with rapid, fast jabs and gettin out of the way and jus keep hititn him down there, and when he least expects it, BAM!!
my boys criticized me for a kinda boring fight, but **** them lol. that dude could straight up BANG with both hands! ........
eazy_mas 12-20-2007, 09:43 AM Hashim Rahman vs Lennox Lewis is a good example the jab to the body was put in good effect. In later rounds after Lennox started to lean down from the jab to the body the overhead right finished it off.
Lennox admited it when Hashem Rahman was fighting Olge Maskeave.Hashem Rahaman lost the fight when he lost his jab.
As for friends saying it is a boring fight. well for me it okay because I alway like to look for stratgey to beat my oppenets. I am a problem solver that is why I like Mayweather because I want to beat him in my mind before seeing it in the ring
fraidycat 12-20-2007, 09:56 AM Nicely done, Killz. Way to get the problem solved and keep your head on your shoulders.
The jab >>>>>> the bomb.

tyl3rdurd3n 12-20-2007, 12:13 PM well done on your fight man, yea the jab to the body is great, hearns used it quite a bit and he took his opponents apart, but he also had one hell of a right hand
P4PKING_2008 12-20-2007, 01:11 PM Floyd always does a jab to the body, but i have fallen out of love for the shot because when floyd tried it against zab it only took a right hook to send him down, ok it wasn't counted but should have been. You always seem vulerable for that shot.
msagrain 12-20-2007, 01:21 PM the jab wins the fights in am fights. it aso hurts a strainght to the solorplexes lol. u ever been hit there?

shawn_ 12-20-2007, 01:59 PM Jab to the body is the most underated punch in boxing. Ive made more sparing partners quit with that punch than anything else. A few jabs to the body and "I dont feel good today, I think I'm done."

im sparrin a really fast guy tonight and im aimin my jab to that body all night man. my new favorite punch. slows em down, drains em, breaks em. what more can u ask for?

Agreed. That's a shot I was never able to get off accurately and always feared getting countered. I wasn't quick enough to pull that off but I was able to get straight rights to the body off easier, maybe that's odd, I dunno. The only way I can see landing that is to kind of leap in with it like Mayweather does and then immediately pull back.
Nice job man, i've always liked to use the straight right to the body. But tonight during sparring i'l try and work on throwing more jabs downstairs. Cause as of right now i usualy jab sometimes double it up then go downstairs with a straight right. If i've landed that a few times i like to finish it up with a left hook upstairs.
GhostInMachines 12-20-2007, 02:56 PM ive been knocked out, or at least gone down hard with kicks to the stomach but never a punch
Banjo7 12-20-2007, 02:57 PM Agree with the jab to the body takes the wind out of them for the big shots.
ive been knocked out, or at least gone down hard with kicks to the stomach but never a punch
i havent gone down from a body kick but i've had sickening bruises from them lol

my sparing partner is insane he hits u with his toes rite in the solar plexus with a roundhouse its like a snake kick but if its on the ribs i usually dont go down
yeah getting hit in the solar plexus isnt nice wether its a punch of a kick. I cant imagine getting hit there with a spinning back kick...one you'd feel like a dumbass for getting hit with it and too it would huuurrrttt

The left hook to the liver is the one I hate. I'm a southpaw. I had to get dropped to hands and knees a few times before I figured out exactly where to hold my right elbow.

i have nightmares about those
idk something about stinging shots to the kidneys just comes back to me in my sleep

ur a southpaw eh? i gotta say i HATE fighting southpaws, absolutely hate it, but anyway, the two punches i throw against them 99% of the time are the straight right and the left hook to the liver, one of them will get there. but yea i hear wut u sayin the liver shot is the worst shot to take i think, i would rather get hit anywhere else other than a good clean shot to the liver.
JC Warrior 12-21-2007, 02:43 PM Few questions about effective jabbing to the body:
Is Rahman's jabs to Lewis body a good template to follow? I didn't like how he leaned over to get leverage on his body jabs, it looked like he was a sitting duck if Lewis would've ever dropped a right hand on him.
Do you step in with a jab to the body the same as a jab to the head?
If you're not fast on your feet is the risk vs reward more likely to pay off when trying body jabs? I'm definitely curious as I'm not fleet of foot enough to pull off the things Floyd Mayweather would do, but the effect of good body punching is universal.
Finally, when trying this is there a good step out / pivot position? I'm guessing you don't just land a jab to the stomach and then wait. What were your feet like when you made actual impact and where do you shift your weight to avoid whatever follow-up you ropponent would have?
Definitely interested in learning more about this stuff, great topic!

SpeedKillz 12-21-2007, 03:10 PM lol im a sauthpaw.
then i hate you lol!
msagrain 12-21-2007, 03:15 PM then i hate you lol!
but the thing is i perfer boxing people who are southpaw.
all southpaws stay away from me!! lol
the ones at my gym are soo frusterating, the move around soooooooo much barely throw any shots.
K-Nine 12-21-2007, 04:31 PM I really gotta start utilizing it more. i usually only jab to the body when the head isnt open. But i remember watching Floyd fight Corrales and eventually break the taller man down with his jab.
Question: should i be using the jab to the body if i'm the taller man? I'm usuallly taller so i don't really use the jab to the body as much.
Peterp 12-22-2007, 12:38 AM i like the jab to the body then overhand right combination
West24 12-22-2007, 01:36 AM i fight south paw but im naturally right handed. so my jab is my strong hand. i have a really good jab and love knocking guys lead hands down with my lead and then wackin them with the jab. my favourite combo is jab then straight left to the solar plexes. almost always work and its a killer. i jump in they think its going to be jab straight to left to the face, and you go straight left to the body while its wide open.
