View Full Version : Who in your opinion is Australia's best boxer?
Greatwhitehope 12-18-2007, 11:25 PM Hey guys, I'd like to start by welcoming myself to the forums, I'm from the South Coast of NSW, just wondering who you guys think is Australia's best boxer? In my opinion it's between these guys:
Danny Green
Anthony Mundine
Sam Soliman
Sakio Bika
Michael Catsidis
I don't know all there is too know about boxing, but I'm genuinely interested and learning more and more and I'm curious as to who you think the best Australian boxer is at the moment.
And if you want to bash Australian boxers can you please just vote for who you think is the least worst. Thank you.

It's with a K.
I voted for Katsidis, purely because he puts himself on the line and fights like a warrior. Mundine is the has the most ability out of all those guys, but lacks heart and isn't prepared to fight the best so I couldn't vote for him as well he's lost all of his big fights.
andigold 12-19-2007, 12:24 AM I went for Katsidis also. Boxing is entertainment and Katsidis is the most entertaining of all the fighters you mentioned. There is a real sense of anticipation before his fights, that's something you don't get from Mundine. (except when he fought Green)
infestacide 12-19-2007, 12:47 AM using the term "boxer" id also say mundine, but if you said "fighter" i would say katsidis, just like brently said, he is a warrior and wears his heart on his sleeve. Kickett is a good prospect, who could surpass mundine.
Biggus Dickus 12-19-2007, 12:54 AM Paul Briggs should be somewhere in that poll, I don't think he should be classfied as "other"
but agree with the previous guys Mundine = most talented but Katsidis is the best at the moment.

Yeah, Briggs should be up there. I think he's had a lot of Tough fights and deserved the World Title more so than Green. Briggs had to keep fighting elimination bouts for years, before getting a shot.
Dick-Sucker 12-19-2007, 02:04 AM Katsidis. For me to.
The thing is though, i like Katsidis. But its a shame to see one of our fighters (Mundine), have the right tools to go far in the game, yet fail to fight the best out there, who im sure he can match it with and beat.

Just need to send him off to Mexico on a bender that will harden him the **** up.
Greatwhitehope 12-19-2007, 02:17 AM I always thought Soliman would go somewhere, especially after his fight against Winky, Mundine completely showed him up. I pretty much agree with everyone else, however I'm really looking forward to seeing Sakio have a few fights, he'd be confident after the contender and is just so dam powerful, really like to see him up against Mundine and I'd really like to see Mundine get over to America and up against Taylor or someone of note.

hey man awesome to have you in here and contributing
i voted for katsidis.. when talking about best boxer you got to look at more than just technical skill (that's why manny pac is in the p4p list) so katsidis for his power, heart, willingness to step up AND skill

I enjoyed Bika's win on the contender but the way he wings those wide punches and his total disinterest in defence makes me think that he will struggle to beat the best.

as proven by the calzaghe and bute fights...
wonder who voted for him
Biggus Dickus 12-19-2007, 06:00 PM Yeah, Briggs should be up there. I think he's had a lot of Tough fights and deserved the World Title more so than Green. Briggs had to keep fighting elimination bouts for years, before getting a shot.
Agree totally, his resume is the best out of any Aussie boxer at the moment by a fair way I reckon. Even though he has come up short twice I have a lot of respect for Briggs and enjoy his style, he has taken the tough road.
I think a matchup between him and Green could be interesting, both like to bang and both have good chins.
Dick-Sucker 12-19-2007, 06:43 PM Just need to send him off to Mexico on a bender that will harden him the **** up.
He would probably get home sick on the first day. Start crying and fly straight back home. I just wish one of our other fighters Had Mundines ability. Imagine Katsidis still having his heart and with Mundines ability.
To make matters worse. Mundine is fighting Hamden. Its officially going to be announced today. Which is a shame. A sad day for aussie boxing.
Greatwhitehope 12-29-2007, 07:55 AM What are the odds of Hoppa and Haumono fighting some day?

Patty Tanager 12-29-2007, 01:34 PM Katsidis by a distance.
Although i admit i haven't seen every fighter on that list.
I saw Mundine get sparked out by Ottke which was hilarious, and Kessler whooped him. But i don't like Mundine he is too arrogant and ****y.
Darchinyan was exciting, i saw him put that guy in a coma, and also get KOed by Donaire. And Sakio Bika, he is an animal.
But Katsidiis is one of my favourites to watch, and he fought like a lion against that Philipino guy. I was gutted when i found out his fight with Diaz was off.
Super Flyweight 12-29-2007, 11:06 PM Mickeyb told me earlier... that...
skill and experience wise? : mundine.
prospect-wise - katsidis...
theres a difference...whether mundine will put his arse out there... who knows..
same for Katsidis, but he's got a lot more time on his hands, and frankly, alot more offers.
and erm...he's a f.aggot for thinking that..all the way...
Sakio Bika for life! You ****ing worms!

Mate you probably haven't seen more than 1 fight of any fighter on that list.
For a start every one on the aussie forum knows that Mundine would pretty much **** on Ottke's head now. As for the Kessler fight, ask 2501 a non-aussie, it was pretty close i gave it three rounds to Kess and i could have called another one even. Go watch Mundines fights against Green, Soliman and some other ones after his loss to Kessler. Than tell me how much he has improved. No you can't can you, your just one of those guys that beats up on fighters. Have to admit Mundine has no heart and fights bums thouhg.
Agree with what you have had to say about Vic And Michael. Michael is especially a warrior. One of my favourite fighters going around now. I just can't see how the guys not Mexican, he has such a big heart.
P.S go watch these fighters videos a bit more. 1 video per fighter isn't adequate.

I have seen 2 of Katsidis fights, as well as highlights. Like i said i have only seen 2 Mundine fights and some Darchinyan fights and highlights.
I can't tell you if he has improved or not, because i haven't seen him fight (nor care to) since Kessler. I "beat" up on him because he is an absolute arsehole. So what if he would beat Ottke now, the fact is he talked a lot of smack about Ottke being featherfisted and got knocked the **** out. The man is a cunt, i can't wait to see him get knocked out again after burning the British flag. He is arrogant, ****y, talks smack and cannot back it up. I just found it funny when he got knocked down a peg.
But anyway like i voted, Katsidis is my favourite aussie boxer, he has heart determination, willing to fight the best (who is Mundine fighting these days?), and is model professional.

Total bums, his last fight was against some Argentinian ranked 15th or something, the guy had lost 5 of his last 7 or something similar.
His next fight is against a guy called Hamden I think, another bum and a has been bum at that. Had a shoulder reconstruction and has lost 4 of his last 11 to other bums or something similar
Patty Tanager 12-30-2007, 11:14 AM Yeah i think the whole WBA "Super Champ" thing is the biggest load of **** ever. Don't wanna upset any aussies but Mundine is just a paper champion at the moment. If he wants to be taken seriously he should be looking at fighting some of the top names of the division right now.

Prooves my point exactly. You haven't seen him fight much. He has improved ****loads since Kessler mate, people will say that. When he fought Kessler he barely had any body shots or uppercut, hook combos. Now he has the package. Yeh fair enough about the guy being a dickhead, because the way he carries on its hard not to agree. But i have stopped judging fighters from how modest they are, because if we go through the history of boxing you will see some fighters who have been nice to the media and the fans, have actually done some bad stuff outside the ring. Sure AM is a total tosser to the media, but apparently hes a good family man and i respect that in everyone. So i really don't judge boxers for what there like say, or how they get attention.
Also you might want to take note with Ottke, he knocked him down a couple of round before (Germans took it as a slip). Then at the start of the 8th he had Ottke rattled and hurt, was one punch away from finishing the fight, totally ran out of puff.
If you don't care about a fighter don't make such comments about them. Its degrading to our sport when fans have a go at fighters who they know nothing about. I don't hammer Marquez, or Diaz, i barely watch that division, so i barely comment on it.
Good day.
Patty Tanager 12-30-2007, 03:59 PM Have Marquez or Diaz burnt your National Flag in public?.
I think my point was fairly valid actually in responding to the question, "Who in your opinion is Australia's best boxer?", I give my reasons for katsidis and stated why i don't think its Mundine. Didn't mean to offend you like.
Patty Tanager 12-30-2007, 04:04 PM Yeah you say he has improved, but it is easy to look good against crap fighters. We won't know if he has improved or not till he is in the ring with a legit contender. Of course he is going to look good against fighters that have lost their last 7 fights.
Im using your fellow aussies with on his oponents for reference, because as i say i haven't seen the fights.

Danny Green is LHW champion and could beat Woods or Erdei if they fight.
Sam lost to Winky by 2 rounds, i don't think hes world class. But Danny definetely is.
The facts are, Mundine now is the complete package as a fighter. Sure hes fighting bums. But his biggest fights are in front of him, and make sure to PM me when he fights Bute and kessler in the next couple of years, because i will bet all my points that he takes a UD in both of them.
The facts are you have watched 1 of his fights. And you can't judge a fighter from. No matter how **** or good he actually is.
Dick-Sucker 12-30-2007, 08:03 PM Definatly, he's just so arrogant.
Agree the guys a fk chop. He holds an interim belt etc etc. But hes our best boxer.

The term 'boxer' is used for the amateurs of the sport, alas Mundine typifies this by taking on taxi and forklift drivers! The term 'fighter' is used for the warriors in professional ranks in which Katsidis falls into this category! Kickett will be much better than Mundine which he showed in his last fight on Green/Drews card given the kid's only 20 years old!

I think we can agree that Soliman is definately out of his prime now. I don't know about Green at all, but Woods has definately improved since he lost to RJJ, he has a couple of good names under his belt like Glen Johnson and Julio Cesar Gonzalez, so at the moment he is definately in the top 3 at Light-Heavy.
They both have a common opponent De Lisle (Woods TKO 6) (Green KO 9), the only bad loss on his record i noticed was a loss to Beyer (who is horrendous), but i don't know the circumstances in that fight as i haven't seen it, maybe he was robbed in Germany.
I can't comment on Bute. But you really think Mundine would beat Kessler?, do you think Mundine would even give Kessler the chance to get his own belt. I have seen to full fights and a couple of highlight videos, that is all, he may have improved, but it remains to be seen against the top tier of the division.
I see you really rate Mundine highly, so i would be interested to know your opinion on a fight between Calzaghe and Mundine.

Yeh mate i agree with Soliman. In Germany Green was robbed once, well kind of. But the second time he was clealy outboxed.
On Mundine. He didn't have an amateur career. It has allowed for his professional boxing progress to be rapid, and only recently is it becoming rapid. He has a speedy jab, lightning. His weakness is fighting from the inside, but even then he can do it alright, but only if he shows some heart. Why i rate him so highly? He is technically correct. And his defence is so under rated. He has one of the best defences in the world. I have compared it to Floyd. he rolls his shoulder perfect, has tremendous speed to move around the ring, and hes simply hard to tag.
The last Kessler fight was a lot closer than those judges scored it (so often happens in our sport). But since then mate, sure Kessler has improved. I just feel Mundine has improved a lot more though. Sure hes fighting bums at the moment, but the talent is there.
He is our best athlete. Maybe in argument with Casey Stoner. But he is our only real chance of going big in the game. And dominating and becoming major in the sport. Willie Kickett may in 4-5 years time. But for now, Mundine is our big chance at putting us on the boxing map again. Can he do it? He may not, buti just have the sneaky feeling he can and will.
Anyway we want him to fight Calzaghe. Or Bute. Or Kessler next. Not these bums like Hamden, Clavero or Nievas. He has got the point though. I was speaking to someone from his marketing team.
P.S how good is Tim Cahill. Honestly. LOL. Do you reckon hes top 5 best premier league players at the moment?
Calzaghe vs Mundine : Logic says Calzaghe wins. But im a big fan that styles make fights. And Mundine is the most technically correct fighter Calzaghe would have ever faced. Its going to be close. Very close. AM could cause an upset. Favourite Calzaghe obviously.
We want this fight to happen. Calzaghe vs Mundine. Geez if Mundine pulled that off then he really is the man lol.

You're spot on with Mundine's defensive skills, he is phenomanally hard to hit. He does have a suspect chin when tagged though.
I also think he has the fight plan to beat Kessler should they ever meet again. Kessler is the straight up & down type of fighter that Mundine loves, he can move both ways behind the jab, flurry and slip away without taking hardly any punishment himself. He doesn't want to get caught inside too often but he is now reasonably competent there.
Calzaghe is a whole different matter though. He's blistering hand speed and unpredictable movement will upset Mundine's rythym. Mundine will be hit often and will end up grappling, bewildered and out boxed. I don't know if Joe has the power to finish it early but I think he would win a comfortable decision.
This said however, at 35 Calzaghe is a fight to fight proposition and one day he will come out and his age will have caught up to him, if Mundine's in the opposite corner on this day then he could have a career to remember.
Also as stated by many others Mundine is a tool.

Outboxed by Beyer?, that doesn't sound to impressive, if that is the case and he hasn't improved since then, Clinton Woods would eat him up.
Surely Katsidis is Australia's best chance of getting back on the boxing map. Mundine is still in Australia fighting these "bums", and Katsidis has gone to America signed to fight Diaz, taking on Casamayor, not scared of anyone.
It was a hypothetical question anyway, there is no way on earth Calzaghe will be fighting Mundine if its possibly his last year in boxing, he is obviously after fighting Hopkins, and probably the winner of Taylor-Pavlik 2.
You say that you think Mundine is technically sound, but if ever there was a technically sound fighter out there, then surely that is Mikkel Kessler?. Calzaghe utilizes all sorts of angles, throws 100 punches around, can Mundine handle that. From what i have seen of Mundine, he seems to fight at a relatively slow pace. and i have also noticed that he is susceptible to uppercuts, one of Calzaghes best punches. I also noticed that both Mundine and Kessler look a bit robotic at times, and the variation and angles that Calzaghe offered Kessler, were too much for him to handle.
Tim Cahill lol. He is on a fantastic goal spree lately, he has been on fire. He has got to be one of the best headers of the ball out there. On current form i would say he is in the top 5 of the league, hell he even managed to score against my team lol.

Where is the proof of that?? Seriously you give Mundine way too much credit for what he's done in the sport.
