GracieMag.com has released the following statement in regards to the death of Ryan Gracie:
The world of MMA and its founding family suffered a tragic loss this Saturday morning. Ryan Gracie has passed on from causes not yet known while incarcerated in Sao Paulo. The Gracie, who is most known for his performances in PRIDE Fighting Championship, was being held for alleged car theft and attempting to steal a motorcycle armed with a kitchen knife. After failing to start the motorcycle and being restrained by companions of the motorcycle's owner, Ryan was detained by police. The cause of his death has not yet been determined, although the fact that toxicology exams were performed prior to his death suggests drugs are thought to be involved. GRACIEMAG.com sympathizes and sends its condolences out to Ryan's family, many of whom are in California for the World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

Yeah I can't say I'm too fussed about this either, the guy was a complete dirtbag and thug and didn't do justice to the Gracie name.

Father says he will prosecute doctor who attended Ryan Gracie in SP

Fighter's Sister Says She Questioned the Amount of Drugs Prescribed to Ryan Gracie.

Shaken, Robson Gracie, the father of the jiu-jitsu fighter Ryan Gracie found dead in a Sao Paulo police station on Saturday, said that he will sue Doctor Sabino Ferreira Faria for the care he provided to his son.

The statement was made Sunday afternoon after the burial of the fighter, held at Sao Joao Batista Baptist Cemetery in Rio de Janeiro. The athlete was buried wearing a kimono and a black belt and received applause from 200 friends and family.

Like Ryan's sister Flavia, Robson Gracie objected to the quantity of drugs prescribed to his child.

"Ryan goes out searching for help, trying to escape from a nonexistent monster that only existed his head, his panic disorder, was arrested as he should have been, goes to the police station, he leaves the station on foot to go to the Legal Medical Institute of Sao Paulo, calls his mother and says that he is okay. He goes to the station, it is found that he needs help, medical care. A doctor comes, gives him a brutal, violent dose, over the objections of my daughter. And what happens? The boy dies. I will sue him because Ryan died. He is dead," said Robson Gracie, visibly overcome by emotion.

Ryan leaves a 6 year-old son, Rayron, who lives in Rio with his mother, Elaine, in addition to eight sisters and three brothers.

I never understood the Gracie obsession with giving all the males a name starting with the letter R, it is truly bizarre.

Circumstances of Gracie's Death Questioned

December 18, 2007

Representatives from the State Council on the Rights of the Human Person (Condepe) have asked São Paulo's secretary of public security to investigate the death of Ryan Gracie (Pictures).

Gracie was arrested last Friday afternoon and charged with car theft and the attempted theft of a motorcycle. The same day he went through an examination of evidence in the Medical Legal Institute.

Called by the family, psychiatrist Sabino de Farias Ferreira Neto accompanied the fighter and took a urine sample, which indicated the presence of drugs in Gracie's body. The doctor said he provided at least six types of medication. Gracie, who was alone in his cell, was found dead Saturday around 8 a.m.

The Condepe questioned the procedure of the police to allow a doctor to monitor the fighter at the station. The Gracie family has said it will inquire about the doctor and the State over the death.

"Doctor Sabino is crazy, a murderer," Flávia Gracie, sister of the fighter, said in statements to the Brazilian press. "I told him to stop giving medicine to my brother. He said it was to prevent Ryan from being aggressive at the station. I argued that too much medicine would hurt, and the doctor replied that any remedy hurt, even aspirin."

"Ryan, although wrong, had to be arrested and charged for crimes," said Robson Gracie, Ryan's father. "But his death is another thing. I will inquire about that quack doctor."

Neto denied that the ****tail of drugs he gave Gracie is responsible for his death.

"As I told a colleague, the dose that was applied was so little," he said. "I have the greatest regret for what happened, but I fought against this with all I know."

Neto said he understands the pain of the family when they announced that they would inquire about him.

"It is a right of anyone," he said. "I understand and respect the emotional experience for them at this time."

The Condepe also wants to investigate the conduct of police and the Medical Legal Institute because Gracie was not taken to an emergency room, even though he had "suffered blows to the head and was under the influence of drugs."

Gracie was buried Sunday in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 33. He was wearing a gi and his black belt.

Several family members attended, including his parents, Robson and Vera; his brothers Renzo, Ralph and Flávia; his cousins Royler and Kyra; and Murilo Bustamante (Pictures), Vinicius Magalhaes and Roberto "Gordo" Correa.

"For those left behind is much worse than for those who go away," Royler Gracie (Pictures) told the Tatame Web site. "I am sure that Ryan, like Carlson, like all others who have died in the family, are well now, are resting, are reposing. Those who are here will suffer a bit more to continue this, our everyday war. It is the time of rest for the warrior."

A report on the cause of death should be ready in 30 days. One possibility doctors have suggested is cardio-respiratory failure due to a cocaine overdose.

The police will also investigate whether the use of drugs combined with medication may have caused the death.

I was a long time member training at Renzos and had many chances to hang out and meet Ryan and also train with him.

For my experiences with Ryan he was very nice, was cool to train with, but yet you could see he was a little off.

Ryan's life was a struggle. He was mentally ill and lived in constant mental torment. His family stood behind him and supported him, doing as much as they could to try and help him but to no avail. They also never defended any of his actions that were not acceptable.

He deserved to be arrested and imprisoned, but i do not believed he deserved death. Though I do believe he will have more peace in the after than he did in life.

Renzo is a great man, and a true down to earth legit person. He has struggled with helping his brother for years and they were very close. I am sure it is an extremely hard time now for the family, close friends, and especially Renzo.

Condolences with Renzo, Robson, Flavia, Ralph and the rest of the gracies, and also Raphael Correa and Ryan's other very close friends.
