View Full Version : Jeff Lacy too musclebound?
JC Warrior 12-11-2007, 12:42 AM I never put much thought into it since I am nowhere near as muscular / musclebound as Jeff, but Stewards comments that Lacy was struggling because he was so muscular made me wonder a bit. How did guys like Holyfield, Tyson, Mosely who were well known to lift heavy and often avoid getting the apparent hinderance from being excessivley muscular? Any insight on this one would be much appreciated. I've considered using weight training previously but always got shy about it because of the worry over it hampering flexibility / stamina as was eluded too in Lacy's fight vs Manfredo.
Versastyle 12-11-2007, 12:45 AM For that weight Lacy has heavyweight sized arms. The rest of his body is small in porportion. Also Tyson was huge all over,it was smooth all the way around, not one part thats huge he was equally huge.
youngfamous313 12-12-2007, 03:11 AM Man I lift and train, I feel great. I lift big twice a week and lift light wieghts as quick as I can at the end of the week. I'm 136 and I keep lifting IN my training....period!
mickeyb 12-12-2007, 03:39 AM perhaps the comment means that Lacy is unnaturally large for his size. So much to say that Tyson/Holyfield... and others of that ilk were all naturally huge guys anyway. Lacy lifts to many weights.
Lacy is a natural middleweight with a heavyweight physique - and is impeded through lack of speed.
As versa said his arms are way to big. It looks like he only training arms cause they are huge, even a bodybuilder would be happy with those arms.
And yeah he's way to muscle bound to box properly.
i read somewhere that he does NOT use weights (it was a longg time ago, dont remember where).. I was like what?
lacy seemed unstopable.. i was disapointed with his last fight.. i thought he couldve done much better.. but hey, he was off for a while. give him some time to get better.. im NOT hoppin off the bandwagon.. he used to be such an exciting fighter.. ill give him 2 more fight, if i dont see an improvement ill have to say that im not such a fan anymore
SpeedKillz 12-12-2007, 03:37 PM lacy had rotator cuff surgery. his punching with that arm will never be the same again unfortunately. he aint left hook lacy no more...

I dont remember him knocking someone out with it in forever anyway.
JC Warrior 12-13-2007, 12:53 AM to the poster who said they lift heavy while they train could you shed some more insight on that? maybe a bit of a spoiler about your methods / exercises? I'd be interested in trying to incorporate weight training.
a guy in the gym I was in said he sticks with what he called "the fundamental four" bench press, squats, dead lift, and military press in front. the way he pitched it sounded logical but im not smart about weight training so i wasn't comfortable just yet thought I'd solicit some inputs here first.
Versastyle 12-13-2007, 01:06 AM To me weights = slower punching,it always has. Hell ask Jeff Lacy!!!:lol1:

i think this is true, when cus damato was alive, bite tython never lifted weights, cus had bite do plyometrics and bite's speed was amazing. when bite got out of jail he just lifted weights and he was bigger and heavier but never had the speed ( or the skills) again
batista 12-13-2007, 02:16 AM Not this **** again...

Sure bro well first off, I'm about 5'6 140 before the gym 136 after. After my couple of hours of training is over, I head for the wieghts. Usually 3 sets of 8 with 25lbs curls, bench press 3 sets of 8-10 with 145-150. Every friday I take the 5lbs wieghts and curl/butterfly them 50 times as fast as possible. That way you get the physic with the speed! When I first entered my gym, everyone was saying "Man, you trying to be a body builder or a fighter" now guess what, the majority of them are lifting wieghts lmfao. To each his own, they say technique and skill creates power but ****. A little muscle behind the technique aint never hurt nobody.....
well not the person on the giving end....
Darkstranger 12-13-2007, 09:25 AM Lifting weights correctly won't slow you down bodybuilding definatly does! Jeff Lacy looked too bulky for his natural frame!

I think thats lacys problem, he's got to much muscle for his frame.
when you see him in a shirt he looks real small compared to most smw.
If you stood lacy next to kessler he'd look a few weight classes below him.
