View Full Version : Why do people "diss" the keylock?

I always hear people making fun and describing the keylock as an esay move or a beginner's move. I think it takes a little bit of skill to pull out this move, if you don't believe me take a look a Randleman's fight against Yamamoto in Pride 23 were he tried this move for about 5 minutes and couldn't do it.
I have use it to win some matches...if you give me an arm while I'm on side mount, I'd go for it.

First off, your not going to get too many experienced grapplers in a keylock...too many different ways to stop it

Randle couldnt get it because he was doing it wrong and that guy he was fighting knew how to defend it well...If you saw Yo' face, he was hella calm the whole time.

Randle was suppose to pull it to the side, not twist Yo' elbow to the air.

Keylock is good for certain times and set ups....but dont depend on it...be prepared for your next move...Im out

PS--I havent been tapped in a keylock since my 3 month of bjj

The Ensanity is correct.

Also, Randleman was going for the patented "Keylock from the guard" which has been proven time and time again to be ineffective.

It is a solid sub that will work well against new guys. More experienced guys will escape it easy enough. It is a Big GUy move also, like the Chest smother and can opener.

If it is there, I will try it, but prefer to find other ways to sub someone

I consider it a last resort sub myself. But regardless of what they say, the keylock is responsible for many major wins.

I like to fart from the guard...then I check their oil for the submission...

I tap mofos with it all the time. Most people I know dont even apply it right. First off you need to have your thumbs on the outside when you are gripping. Second you need to have your own elbows in. Third you need to have the opponents wrist on the ground at all times. Fourth, your elbow closest to his heasd has to be on the ground. This move works best the closer you have your elbow to his head. Last you need to pull his wrist towards his head and raise your outside elbow at the same time. It needs to be one motion. Never let his wrist come off the ground. It also helps if you reposition your body. you dont wanna be laying in a T formation when you are crossbody. you need to turn your butt so it is facing his face and your hips going towards his legs as if you are getting ready to take the mount.

I like that sub. I do think this though. Everyone has there favorite set of moves, even black belts. The difference is that black belts do 6 or 7 moves in succession as opposed to a blue belt who does 2 or 3. One move may not work for you but it may work for anothr. To say a move sucks or doesnt work is not correct. Some moves have a higer percentage of working. If you perfect your set up any move can become a great move.

I love the key lock. If works for me, I'll keep using it.

Some moves are just fight finishers, the keylock isn't one of them.

Its a good transition move, just ask Nog, but its not something you'll finish someone off with

keylocks are good life situation subs. If someone is holding a weapon, keylock clears that right up.

Looks good that you disarmed him when the cops get there.

Just top let you all know, I used the keylock yesterday and submitted the whoile class with it. Everyone was subbed by me with the keylock. That shows it is very useful.

The reason you don't like it from side mount is because you don't throw you leg over when you have it and that's why people keep getting out of it. P.S. I am one of those wack white belts.
