Question, i was thinking about buying a laptop for myself but i was wondering what is the different between a Pentium <sp maybe>, AMD, and a Celeron processor? I know Pentium is the best but i dunno why. If anyone could explain or just give me an explanation i would appreciate it. THanks

I wish I could help you out there, but I can't. I have no idea.

But wait till Seldom or Jake reply....

Celeron is a stripped down Pentium, less transistors and less cache, which speeds up the overall behavior of applications, games and the such depend more on video card ram and system ram.

Depends on who you talk to as if Pentium is better over AMD. AMD chips used to be inferior, but over the last couple years when they came out with the AMD Athlon, they surpassed Intel in performance and price point. If you compare the prices of an Athlon and a equivalent p4, you'll see some differences. Intel has dropped their prices to try to be competative, but IMO the athlon XP or the Athlon XP Barton pwns the p4 and is easier on the wallet.

If you see a AMD Duron, it's the equivalent of the Celeron, which i would advise to steer away from. Either a straight up p4 or a athlon is what I would recommend, as you are getting a fully fledged processor, rather than a stripped down budget CPU (Duron, Celeron)

This page can help you:

http://www.cpuscorecard.com/cpu_comp.htm

You can compare any 2 CPUs in the market, try it.

i was thinking about getting a amd athlon or whatnot because it's a lot cheaper, but then i thought the processor sucked so i should just spend the extra money on a pentium. now i know, i will prolly buy a amd in the coming days/weeks.

AMD Athlon is bad ass. Except for that new 3 Ghz Pentium with the hyper threading the Anthlons are way better than the Intel's.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Ruffneck....I LOVE my new AMD machine...Just don't try to overclock it too much.

Tom

You can set the proccesor to go faster than it was made to do. All you have to do is keep it cool and have good memory.

if he's getting a laptop he won't be able to overclock it at all since the bios won't unlock the multipliers like buying say an ASUS or a ABIT motherboard would. i took a athlon XP 2700+ to XP 3000 speeds with no major heat increases.

I don't like laptops they are hard to upgrade, always have problems, and cost more for less power.

But damn being able to carry it around wherever is tight. I have one myself.

Well i am at it. Is it hard to network 2 computers onto a wireless router, i'm usinga cable modem and Comcast won't put a second cable modem in my house?

Also i will need to buy 2 netowrk cards and a wireless router right?

i guess that is the price for mobility.

tom, is your current modem a shark fin looking thing?

yeah you'll need two wireless network cards, and a wireless network gateway router. Setup is pretty simple, but it depends all on how familiar with network setup. i saw a netgear system at the local compusa here, the wireless gateway router was about 100 bucks, the cards were 80 a piece.

I would go with netgear because they make really good wireless gateway.

Pretty damn easy to setup.

i was asking about the size of your modem cuz when i used to live in boston and was with comcast i had a sharkfin cable modem, and when i left i didn't want to leave the modem with my ex roomies cuz i knew they wouldn't return it, and now i have a modem that doesn't work here, would let it go fer 50 bucks.

A cable modem doesn't run off the cable lines in the house correct? It's run off a different cable? No?

casp3r

it runs off the exact same cable that your TV comes in on, when people don't access internet cable and just have cable TV, the cable company puts a high pass filter on the line outside near the pole or the box so that the frequency that the cable modem locks on is filtered out.

Tom
05-02-2003, 05:51 PM
soo...i could use a cable line from outside? or is it i have to have a filtered line or something?

casp3r
05-02-2003, 05:55 PM
you already have cable access right?

Um.....This discussion might be better taken to PM if it's heading were I think it is......Just a thought.....Carry on

Tom

what are you talking about Curly?

Casper, yes i have cable acces downstairs tho, and my room is on the 3rd floor...if i can buy a filtered cable or something, i could run it up to the 3rd floor, even tho that is going to be a *****, i think i can do it, and just buy a cable modem for a couple bucks. I can also pay comcast to network the two computers but they will prolly cost me an arm and a leg most likely.

i know i came in this thread late.. and nobody prolly even cares.... but i got a celeron. it owns. i have mad viruses coz people hate me.... but when the celeron is running w/out viruses... it pwns! pwns all!

ahh all you need to do then is buy some coax cable and a line splitter, split the cable going into whatever computer has the cable currently in it, and then if you get another cable modem, you can just run the split wire into the new modem and then into your new computer. i think comcast provisions their modems by MAC address tho, that could be a problem. I would say the wireless router and wireless NIC cards would be the easier solution.
