Regarding the WBA World Championship status, chairman Renzo Bagnariol gave a detailed report. The most outstanding news about it is as follows:
Heavyweight: John Ruiz will defend the title against Andrew Golota next November 13. The winner will have to face mandatory challenger Hassim Rahman within 180 days.
Cruiserweight: Jean Marc Mormeck was set to unify the title with WBC champ Wayne Braithwaite last October 2nd, however a foot injury sustained by Mormeck prevented it. Promoter Don King is expected to communicate the new date in the next few days.
Light Heavyweight: Fabrice Tiozzo will defend the title November 8th against Danny Batchelder. The winner will have to face mandatory challenger Dariusz Michalczewski on February 26.
Super Middleweight: Manuel Siaca was scheduled to defend the title against Mads Larsen October 29, but Larsen’s promoter solicited to postpone the bout due to problems with Larsen’s training. The new date is November 12.
Middleweight: Promoter Don King is trying to put a fight between regular champion Maselino Masoe and Félix Trinidad.
Super Welterweight: Regular champ Travis Simms has to defend the title against mandatory challenger Alejandro “Terra” García within the next 90 days.
Welterweight: Regular champion José Rivera was scheduled to defend the title against Thomas Damgaard last October 2nd. However, Rivera sustained an injury that will prevent him from fighting until at least late November. This fight went on a purse bid won by promoter Don King, who will inform the new date in the next few weeks.
Super Featherweight: Regular champion Yodsanan Nanthachai has to face mandatory challenger Jorge Barrios, however no agreement has been reached between the parties yet. Manager Mario Arano is expected to give an answer about Barrios’ situation before the end of October, after he meets Nanthachai’s promoter Arthur Pelullo. If Barrios is not available, the next available contender will be given a chance.
Featherweight: After contenders Manny Pacquiao and Takashi Koshimoto were not willing participate in elimination bouts, Derrick Gainer was named official challenger. Therefore, the latter will face regular champion Chris John November 26 in Indonesia.
Bantamweight: After regular champion Johnny Bredahl officially announced his retirement last week, Interim champion Julio Zarate will defend the title against the winner of an elimination bout between contenders Wladimir Sidorenko and Leo Gamez, which will take place October 26.
Super Flyweight: Regular champion Alexander Muñoz has to defend the title against Interim champion Martín Castillo. This bout went on purse bid won by Top Rank, which will announce the date and venue of the fight.
Flyweight: regular champ Lorenzo Parra has to face mandatory challenger Brahim Asloum early next year.
Light Flyweight: Rosendo Alvarez lost his title on the scales last October 2nd, yet he beat Interim champ Beibis Mendoza in the ring. Therefore, the title is now vacant and will be disputed between the two highest ranked available contenders.
Minimum: Noel Arambulet lost the title on the scales last July and then he was beaten by Yutaka Niida in the ring. Now Interim champ Juan Landaeta will face Niida October 30th and the winner will be declared regular champion.
