Papa Ace 12-05-2007, 08:16 PM The weakening of the US dollar is a global phenomenon, not just in the Philippines. There is a worrying and looming concern on the slowdown of the US market which is seen carrying on until the next year. It also is the result of the strong peso performance, one of, if not the highest growth in Asia. There are affected segments of the economy, not just the OFWs and their families but as well as exporters. However, people not dependent on dollars are expected to have higher purchasing power coupled by the low inflation rate. Those really affected are families solely dependent on the remittances which is quite sadly a lot. Coincidentally, Ill be attending an investment forum tomorrow in Makati part of which will be tackling this particular issue. Ill see If I can come up with something which might be of help to our fellow Filipinos. SnoopySmurf 12-05-2007, 08:47 PM It's cyclical. The dollar dropped in value back in the mid 80s and climbed back up very strong. Whenever the dollar drops, US exports increase. This eventually makes the dollar strong again. It's normal. 4 months ago, Canadian dollar was higher than the US dollar. Today, or two days ago, the US gained and exceeded the value of the Canadian dollar. It'll be back to normal. When? I don't know. The war in Iraq has cost the US trillions and still manages to be the richest in the world. Once it recoups that loss, it will be back on top - the dollar, that is. kasangga 12-05-2007, 08:49 PM do u guys have the dallor or a different curencey? The local Philippine currency is the Peso. Filipinos are hit by a double whammy of a weakening dollar coupled by a stronger performing peso. This is supposed to be a boon to the Philippine economy, but exporters of local products and overseas workers whose contracts are usually in US dollars are feeling the pain. Their foreign earnings and eventual take home pay translate to a lesser amount in terms of pesos. loui_ludwig 12-05-2007, 09:21 PM I am a Fil-Am, i used to send 200 hundred dollars to my relatives in Philippines. Now i have to send 250 dollars just to make 10,000 pesos. Its nice to see the peso gaining value but the prices are not lowering. My father was an OFW in 80's before we came here. Even though the pesos was around 25 pesos, the prices were OK. On my last vacation, my aunts neighbor use to work abroad, now his planning to do it again along with his wife(going to school for caretaker). Puso mo, tol. Relax lang, he he he. Ayaw kong makipag-talo dito sa forum, pero you can probably look at it this way: Hindi kontrolado ng gobyerno ang presyo ng gasoline at ang totoo niyan ay tumaas talaga ang presyo sa source kayat itinataas din ng mga oil companies ang retail price. Biro mo, from around $60 - $70 per barrel, naging almost $100/barrel. The strong peso provided some measure of relief to the price we pay for our imports, kasama na ang oil products. A small consolation: At times like these, it's better to count our blessings, not dwell on our misfortunes. PrtyBoyDlicious 12-22-2007, 12:28 AM Taxpayers spent P151 M for every law passed BY JESS DIAZ The Philippine Star Here’s one for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not: Filipino taxpayers shelled out nearly P151 million for every proposed piece of legislation that their lawmakers passed in the last three years. Opposition Rep. Carlos Padilla of Nueva Vizcaya revealed Friday that the two chambers of the 13th Congress, whose three-year term ended last June 30, spent a total of P12.5 billion but approved only 83 bills that President Arroyo signed into law. “That’s an average expenditure of P150.6 million for every bill that was enacted into law. And many of those laws are local in application, meaning they seek to change the name of a street or establish a national high school,” he said. He said the expenditures were salaries, allowances and bonuses for senators and congressmen, their staff, secretariat personnel, and operational and travel expenses. “The huge sum of P12.5 billion did not include pork barrel allocations of P70 million per House member and P200 million per senator,” the comebacking Padilla, who served as minority leader in a previous Congress, said. He pointed out that the process of making laws has increased nearly three times since the post-martial law Congress when the late Palawan Rep. Ramon Mitra Jr. was Speaker. “Back then, they spent P4.4 billion and enacted exactly 1,000 bills,” he said. On Thursday, Padilla urged the House leadership to solve the perennial problem of absenteeism among members of the chamber so they can be more productive and make the lawmaking process more cost-efficient for the Filipino taxpayer. He said whoever wins the fight for the post of Speaker between incumbent House boss Jose de Venecia Jr. and his challenger, Cebu Rep. Pablo Garcia, his top priority should be ensuring that there is enough attendance in sessions. He cited the fact that the House failed to muster quorum during the final week of session of the 13th Congress in early June when lawmakers reconvened after a four-month election break. Because of such failure, important bills were not passed, including one that aims to bring the prices of medicines down and the P10-billion compensation package for thousands of victims of human rights violations during martial law. In the Senate, though there was quorum, senators sat on a bill that the House had transmitted to them more than a year ago and which would have spared millions of minimum wage earners from paying income tax. Padilla’s revelation on the cost of lawmaking prompted Sorsogon Rep. Jose Solis to criticize the De Venecia-led House which at one time reported saving P60 million. Solis said House leaders resorted to “window dressing” by making it appear that they saved taxpayers’ money when in fact they spent more on a per-bill or law basis. The Sorsogon congressman is supporting Garcia’s bid to be the next Speaker. On the other hand, De Venecia supporter Rep. Monico Puentevella of Bacolod City echoed Padilla’s call for the next House boss to put an end to the absenteeism problem. bombshell 12-22-2007, 06:40 AM ibang klase talaga at nakakadismaya....kaming mga ofw's parang nasa pinas na rin palit ng piso pababa ng pababa ang sweldo di naman nataas....mga buraot talaga yang mga nagawa ng batas na yan...kaya ako di na naboto sa eleksyon wala naman kasing pagbabago kung meron nakakadismaya pa! |
