Hi guys,

I have been going boxing for a month now and been sparring twice 6 sessions. Tonight was the worst. I had been sparring my mate who is at the same level as me but i feel that in our forst sessions i had the upper hand so i dropped my hands a little tonigth when i sparred him and caught me right on the nose with a straight left. OUCH!! And then we both sparred this guy who is taller than us, heavier than us, he had bag gloves on, and did i mention he has had amateur fights before so yeah hes pretty good. I had no idea how to beat him or even land sufficent shots on him he chased and chased me down. I had no chance and was eating right hands in no time. My nose was busted from an early right hand from my mate and then i cut my mouth. I think having braces and no mouthgaurd didn't help at all though.
Im 5,8 btw. He was about 6 foot at least and had a lot of power. And at the end of this session my trainer goes to me i need a few more rounds on the bags. I was like wtf how can i be expected to make an impact who is miles better than me and hurting me with every shot?
Have any of you got any tips for sparring against someone like this? Please and thanks.

usually when someone posts something like this i write a hole paragraph, but ive found a shorter answer..just walk in with all the confidence and pretend that hes nothing..keep telling your self this guy aint **** and walk through his punches and throw some of your own no matter how nervous or how much fear you have..

you could walk in and take punches....

OR work on your foot work.. upper body movement .... and slipping punches...

Yh i would try that but i wouldn't be able to hit him clean if im upclose. As he was chasing me round and had to try and jab to keep him off me. But maybe if i stood my ground his power wouldn't be as good, smothe rhis power like hatton. But i doubt my trainers would appreciate it. But thanks im going to try that though. Standing my ground i mean.

yh with no ring either but hes ordered one and its coming next week so i couldnt really go round him and jab. As i had to keep lookign down so i dont go over some lines. which is bull****. And i ahd no idea why he let him use bag gloves either.

i cant believe your trainer let you spar without a mouth piece. and you have braces? thats just plain stupidity. my trainers wont let you spar at all if you dont have a mouth piece. you can do so much more damage without one, it not only stops you from breaking all your teeth and having your gums slice through your teeth and cut open your face, it helps prevent concusions and serious head injuries. and if you are sparring a bigger guy you should get inside on him and not let him use his reach advantage.

LoL sparring someone wearing bag gloves = the pain

I wonder what it would be like to smack someone right in the ribs with bag mitts on. Probably leave a few fractures id imagine.

Hi guys,

I have been going boxing for a month now and been sparring twice 6 sessions. .Your problem is, you have no business sparring to begin with, considering the amount of experience(or lack thereof) you say you have! Second, just who the hell is this coach of yours, what the f**k is he thinkin' letting a straight up novice spar:nonono: . My conclusion is, it's either your making up some story(i hope this is some sick joke) or you and your coach are lacking some serious common sense.

lol nah man its a proper gym but the others had mouthpieces. And the guy who i sparred was the only one who wore bag gloves.

im not ****ing making this up i posted it for advice on how to handle someone who is better than you in every way, but it seems you just want to criticise how we spar. Rightly so though.

And yeah i have read on here that it takes most people about 3-6 months until there sparring each other but i was only a few weeks. Maybe not a great idea.

What kind of trainer would let someone spar with bag gloves?

I mean i can see guys not being able to buy a ton of gear, we have that at our gym, but they have sets of sparring gloves.

damn....

its stupid because i could definately see a lawsuit come from something like this. student didnt want to seem like a "*****" and say no to sparring, and then gets his face crushed in with bag gloves and no mouth piece. i think the gym would definately have a case on their hands.

yeah, i was thinking that. It has nothing to do with being tough thats just straight stupid. Its like being a Catcher in baseball and not wearing pads.

Hey man if the guys taller than you it does you no good to be trying to stay on the outside (he'll just keep jabbing away when you cant even reach him). You gotta try and work your way inside, it'll be hard for him to get off a real jab and as long as you can cover up, slip, etc you can avoid some of his shots and time your own (also maybe try feinting, I like to move my whole body sometimes..it really throws some guys off). Invest in a mouth guard man..you can get one for about 5bucks at a sporting good store, it'll be the best money you could spend man. Sounds like you may be safer just training yourself man..

the imaginative re-enactment is what makes this funny...

So you sparred without a mouthpiece and have braces?

I punched a friend in the face years back. He had braces on, and the skin all on the side of mouth was stuck to the braces. He had to rip his skin to get it off.

So either you're incredibly stupid, you enjoy pain, or you're lying...
