Joe's lack of mobility would concern me with this match up. I'm not sure a puncher of even his caliber could afford to stand up against Dempsey. I see Dempsey getting caught a few times before eventually overwhelming Louis.

Jack's gonna come straight at him and pay for it. It would be exciting while it lasted, but Louis' quicker hands, better defense and size advantege would get to Jack. Louis gets him early/mid rounds.

This is one of the hardest fights to pick but if held in a 'phone booth' Dempsey would prevail!

No matter how many times it's talked about is great with me. Wow, what a match up.
As I get older, I appreciate Joe Louis more and more. Dempsey has always been one of my very favorite fighters, and I used to think that he would KO Joe. But the more film I've seen on Louis, I'm not sure anymore.
Would Louis be able to catch the bobbing and weaving Dempsey? If he connects clean, it's over. Dempsey's chin ain't the most solid.
But, neither is Joe Louis known as having a granite jaw.
With a gun to my head, I would pick Louis by late KO.

How does Dempsey win in a phone booth?!
Joe has too much power for that.

Dempsey would be just way too rough for Joe to handle! Jack 'The Boston Gob' Sharkey who faced both men even said that Dempsey would prevail if held in close quarters. Dempsey's hands and feet would be too much for Joe! As I've said this is such a hard fight to pick and Louis was a 'Long Reigning' Champ 11 years 8 months which tells you his worth!

Yes Jack was good up close, but one of the reasons he could be good up close in a large ring is because his opponents always knew in theory that he could side step, back off or go anywhere he wanted to. This means that the opponent knows that he (the opponent) must time jack correctly so that he dosen't miss his shots and get punished. How a person does up close when they also have a large space available to them can't be compared to how they do up close when they have no space because the options that the open space provides always factors into the calculations of both fighters. If Louis was fighting Dempsey in a phone Booth you wouldn't see a speck of strategy from Louis because it would be unecessary, the guy is right in front of him and can't move, he would just swing on him untill he dropped. Dempsey is faster but it would take Dempsey more punches to knock Louis out. Once Dempsey is hit once with a good shot, (which will not be hard to do in a phone-booth) even if he is not out, he will atleast be stunned enough to allow Louis to follow up and take him out. If Louis really wanted to get lazy he could just kick it off by throwing the kind of hard bodyshot he landed on Schmelling to end this fight, or begin the end of it. Once again, there is nowhere for Dempsey to go, the body is just there in a phone booth..

You must also take into consideration that Louis was dropped ten times and stopped twice so he would definitely have real trouble with Dempsey's vicious hooks and brutal in-fighting.

That's why I think Louis would have trouble in an actual match.
The times he was knocked out were in normal boxing matches in a real ring. He had to calculate how he should fight based upon all the options that the space of the ring provided. In a phone booth it's much different, he wouldn't need to strategize too much. Once again, I think it is a mistake to confuse how well someone does in close range in a huge boxing ring, with how well they would do in a confined space where their opponent knows they have nowhere to go. lol it's not like Louis is going to be using the jab to set up a right hand in a phone booth. He is going to swing for the fences, and he hits harder than Dempsey...and there is nowhere for Dempsey to go.

15 round draw with Louis down in round 2 and Dempsey down in round 15.

Dempsey by KO. Basically the same as Louis vs. Marciano, only with a bigger, faster, and meaner version in Dempsey, against a younger Louis. Dempsey would smother him from the start, and not stop swinging until Louis was on his back.

I'd pick Dempsey, Joe didn't have the toughest chin.

Joe Louis never liked being crowded, and I can see Jack Dempseys speed and tenacity giving him trouble. Dempsey also packed a very solid punch, and it would be no surprise if Louis went to the canvas a few times during this fight.

Louis was a very skilled counter-puncher how ever, and he was excellent at tying up his foe. His handspeed were at the level of Dempseys (if not even faster) and his reflexes were superb. Louis also carried that lethal power, and Dempsey would surely face some jolting counterpunches coming in.

I see this fight opening with Dempsey taking advantage with a lightening fast start, coming in much like a young and hungry Mike Tyson would. A well-prepared and topconditioned Louis would be able to block and parry alot of the punches how ever, and countering with lightening fast and accurate punches himself. This would gradualy slow the everattacking Dempsey down and make it possible for Louis to take control of the fight.

It would definitely be very tiresome for Dempsey to come forward against someone who counters him with the power and accuracy that Joe Louis delivered. Louis on the other hand was excellent at pacing himself, and this would come to his full advantage later in the fight.

I can easily envision Louis being hurt and wobbled in this matchup, but I don't see Dempsey knocking him out cold. Louis at his best was too skilled and his chin was more solid than many give him credit for. When he went down, he was usually up at the count of 3 or 4 and he only got knocked out after taking one helluva beating, either before or after his absolute prime.

After rounds of blocking, parrying, covering up, countering and tying up his brutal foe, Louis would win this fight, either by decision or late stoppage.

W Joe Louis

Which Jack Dempsey? Either would win though.

I like Louis's superior technique and more accurate precise punching. Dempsey didn't have the boxing ability to out box Louis so he would be forced to bang with him, which would be very bad. Louis has also has dealt with powerful come forward fighters well and in his fight with Charles Retzlaff, he showed that he could give lateral movement as well. I like Louis by late stoppage. It would take some rounds because Dempsey had a great chin, but eventually he would go. Louis was a murderous puncher and he would shine against a brawler like Dempsey. He would have to get up off of the canvas to do it though.

Dempsey round 3 ko. Louis would be finished with ease.

I'd probably go with Louis. I think after Dempsey has the better of the early rounds and maybe drops Joe once or twice Louis lands one of those precision combinations and Dempsey can't recover. KO8 Louis.
