Okay so on October 1st I started boxing at this boxing gym. 3-5 days a week, personal training for around 1 & 1/2 hour per day. I did all of October, watching what I eat. I ate 4 meals a day, not exactly counting my calories but eating VERY clean compared to what I usually eat. Meals consisted of veggies, meats, some fish, and some fruits mostly apples or bananas. I got most of my carbs from veggies and some from brown rice, white steamed rice, and brown bread sometimes. I drank PLENTY of water and barely any sodas or juices. Everything was going pretty smooth, I lost some pounds and was ready to take on November.
My trainer is an excellent boxing trainer, hes taught me a great deal in just one month. He is also in great shape, hes a professional boxer and has been for over 15 years. He put me on his own diet on November 1st. The diet is not too far off from mine, but there were a few things he said that had me scratching my head.
First off, 3 meals a day and no snacks in between. As opposed to my 4 meals a day, with 1 or 2 small snacks, usually a fruit, in between.
Second, drink as little water as possible. This definitely confused me. He wants me to work out everyday in a sweat suit, and NOT to drink water during my work. Just a little bit of water after the workout. And NO WATER with my meals, try to drink a natural juice or a diet soda. WTF?
Third, keep the carbs limited and get them ONLY from veggies. Meaning no bread (even whole wheat), no rice (even brown rice).
He thinks this would work for me.
Breakfast @ ~9:00am (before working out with him) Multi-vitamin, Vitamin B12, Fish Oil, and a yogurt with some fruit.
Lunch @ ~ 2:00pm (Either turkey, chicken, or fish with some mixed veggies). This should be my biggest meal of the day. NO WATER
45 Minute running cardio workout before dinner.
Dinner @ ~7:00pm (A light meal, maybe a chicken salad or something equivilant)
NO SNACKS IN BETWEEN. CHEW GUM IN BETWEEN MEALS!
I dont know if I can do this much longer. I go through the day hungry, especially at night. I asked him why I shouldnt drink water and he says he doesnt want my body to retain a lot of water. He says this diet is just temperary for this month and maybe 2 weeks after that. He wants it to be strict so I can lose the majority of my body fat then we can loosen up the diet a little. "This is a boxers diet, not a regular diet". Whatever that means
Looking for some imput here... Am I the only one that thinks the whole NO WATER deal is crazy? And why 3 meals instead of 4 or 5 small meals. No breads and rice I can kinda understand, limiting the carbs but I thought those were okay carbs and not the crappy kind? Advice please.....
msagrain 11-09-2007, 02:39 PM if your really thirsty you should drink byt he says it so your body will get used to it because if you drink loads of water before or in a fight you will be bloted. and as for the running its just about will power which you have to have.
mickeyb 11-09-2007, 02:59 PM Well... i could see the logic..if... you were fighting at the end of this month and you had to desperately get the weight off for that night only.
Otherwise.. you should be drinking water as much as you want... more in fact.
Is he pretty old school in his ways?
DoctorKillJoy 11-09-2007, 03:24 PM I'm not a doctor but it doesn't sound right to me. Of course most doctors would probably be overconservative about stuff like that. Ultimately you have to decide for yourself, but I'd be careful if you're feeling lightheaded or anything. Especially if you've only trained a month or so and may not be in peak condition.
DoctorKillJoy 11-09-2007, 03:25 PM oh wait... i am a doctor.
doode.. thats wut boxers do to make weight..
cotto used to drink capfuls of water tryin to make weight wearing the vynal suit.. its normal, but unhealthy..
punchDrUnK MONK 11-09-2007, 11:42 PM if ur tryin to lose weight n get definition thats a great workout plan from ur trainer.
PROJEKTM3 11-10-2007, 03:18 AM Yes I am trying to lose weight but I am not trying to make a certain weight for a fight... I just started training and am no where near ready to get into the ring.
So I guess my trainers diet is okay, I will stick with it. I always thought drinking plenty of water was the right thing to do on a diet, I guess not!
TudorMiron 11-30-2007, 10:25 AM This is plain wrong! Assuming you're not trying to make weight for upcoming fight. You need lots of water if you work hard - as guys said, during the day you should drink more water than you want to.
Dehidration is a very serious danger - don't get yourself in that position.
Thanks
Ted

Ur trainer is a smart guy and u should take his advice. Only I would add not to eat after 7:00

U can drink before u go to sleep. Working out hard makes u very very very thirsty too much water can get u bloted.
JC Warrior 12-04-2007, 01:47 AM at 6'1 240 I would imagine you've got plenty of water especially in your fat cells. Assuming you're not muscle bound the original diet / training plan sounds pretty much spot on for reasonable fat loss. Keep in mind that fatty cells have a fair amount of water in them. Your hypothalamus will trigger the thirst response when you have sweat a lot and when you have cycled urine two or three times before rehydrating (not just water but any fluid intake). Even though your fat cells are plenty hydrated you may still "feel" thirst. As eluded too above with running you just need to have some will power with this as well. Radical dehyrdration is indeed dangerous, but at 6'1 240 you're likely a ways away from dehydration.
1966tinman 12-04-2007, 06:26 AM I am an ex-boxer and I believe you should try this diet. In the mornings you should eat a meal that you would typically eat for dinner. This is because throughout the day you will burn this meal off. At lunch eat a balanced meal like steamed vegetables, fruits like bananas, maybe eat some fish and drink some fruit juice with a vitamin supplement. About an hour and a half before your evening workout eat two nutritional bars with about 20 oz. of water. The evening meal should be a low calorie breakfast meal . This is because you won't go to bed with a lot of calories in your stomach. If you are wearing a sauna suit do drink enough water . Good luck and I wish you the best.
skilgannon 12-10-2007, 11:26 PM I dont understand the part where he tells you no water but drink natural juice (understandable) or diet soda. Diet soda wtf?! That has like no nutritional value in it so I dont understand why he would say to drink that

diet soda for the sodium.. aka (electrolytes)
GhostInMachines 12-11-2007, 06:15 PM i have a workout tip, next time your in your gym, RUN.
run out of there and never go back
if you want to lose weight YOU NEED TO DRINK WATER
water is what fuels your kidneys,
you need it to gain muscle weight, and to lose fat weight. it eliminates fat and drains out toxins with exercise, and is needed to fuel your muscles to get bigger, so all around it is key for nutrition. water has no calories, or anything really of that matter, how could it be bad for you. apparently some ppl think it makes you weak, their idiots. i drink a gallon of water a day, thats 8 lbs, and by the next morning its all gone. it flushes all the garbage out of your system that usually turns to fat, so it prevents fat in the first place.
your kidneys need water to operate, its your bodies natural filtration system. without water your body wont be able to eliminate these fats. thats why beer gives you a gut- it dehydrates you, and shuts down your liver and its glucose production. sounds like a good idea huh?
hence the fat old beer belly.
if you dont hydrate yourself, your filtration system will **** the bed like if your an alchoholic. if ur liver and kidneys all ****ed up good luck loosing weight it will be real hard to get the fat out of your body since you ****ed the thing that eliminated it. im kind of over exagerating tho your not gonna destroy your internal organs by only drinking awater bottle a day or less, plenty of americans dont drink water, they only get the water out of soda, and just as many are fat.
diet soda.. lol.. drink gatorade for electrolytes, or half water half gatorade when your working out. he may have been a pro boxer and the whole "tried and true" element may be there, but ok bruce lee used to wear weighted boots when he ran, just cause he did that doesnt mean you should do it. he also trained about 5 hours a day and did thousands of crunches. good idea? no. just cause something doesnt make you fail doesnt make it a good idea, its just a waste of time.
GhostInMachines 12-11-2007, 07:02 PM do you have alot of fat or are you mostly muscle?
there is too much of a good thing and you can die from drinking too much water, its called water intoxication so you shouldnt drink too too much, i mean too much is like 3-5 gallons but still. you just dont want to fill up on anything before you train because youll most likely puke. Like i said before all the water i drink is usually gone by the next morning so its not like it just sits in your body and bloats you.
skilgannon 12-11-2007, 09:51 PM LMFAO at drinking diet soda for sodium. you can get sodium and electroltyes from other endless amounts of food that are way healthier
GhostInMachines 12-12-2007, 01:30 AM LMFAO at drinking diet soda for sodium. you can get sodium and electroltyes from other endless amounts of food that are way healthier
well idk man, how are you supposed to get uncurable diseases AND sodium without drinking diet soda?
:D
skilgannon 12-12-2007, 02:44 AM exactly. I mean that stuff shouldnt even be part of any fighter's diet at all. Its not just the short term effects of such foods, some can even have long term effects. Most diet sodas are filled with artificial sweetners and sodium
benzoate (which is a known carcinogen) which they have no clue what they can do to your body in the long run since they have only been around for about 2 or 3 decades

yep, ur putting the name to the stuff i try and stay away from. it really can be cancerous. but ok bruce lee did all this crazy stuff, half the stuff he did was just ridiculous. he didnt study physiology or how the body worked. hed be in better shape than half the people out there by sitting around drinking mountain dew watching TV, but its just cause he was a freak of nature. if he choked seagulls for an hour every day people would do it too regardless.
just cause ur trainer made it to fight professionally doesnt mean he had it down packed, try and take the good with the bad and learn, but be weary cause he makes mistakes as well, and his diet missed key stuff and inhibited him from being even better so be careful what you read, believe it till you see it, then see it twice.
jdubb863 12-12-2007, 04:03 PM yo im 5ft5 and weigh 156.... I dont look fat but i am kinda flabby. i checked my body fat percentage and it was at 12%. Wich i heard was normal... I was wondering what the average weight is for sum1 my height.... Im not sure if i should do more cardio to lose sum of that fat or weight train? I dont want to get a bulky 165pnds. I use to weigh about 185 chubby kid whaen i was a teen... Is that why im jiggily? Can sum1 give me some advice?
skilgannon 12-13-2007, 02:59 AM another thing you should really avoid is any type of hydrogenated oil. that stuff is like slow acting poison on your body. That stuff is also known as trans fat. Regardless of what the box says (trans fat free etc..) check the ingredients. if any type of "hydrogenated oil" is in there, stay away from it. FDA requires that anything having trans fat be labeled but if under .5 gram, the product is allowed to say trans fat free. the problem is trans fat should only be in trace amounts in your body (better to not have any at all) and .5g of trans fat is way too much for you already. also, that stuff is carcinogenic too as it encourages free radical growth
