Burning Desire 11-29-2007, 10:59 AM Srl record is generally stated at 145-5
Donald Curry had amazing amateur record 400-4.
Dynamite76 11-29-2007, 11:00 AM I've read Howard Davis Jr. as 125-5
xcaref 04-15-2008, 04:08 AM JMM 35-1
Margarito 18-3
aussieboxer2320 04-15-2008, 05:27 AM yeah but back then people fought more often as amateurs, nowadays it would take up to 15 years of constant fighting to rack up 300-400 fights
mcentepede 04-16-2008, 04:42 PM Ya'll nuthing but haters....Joel Casmajor (current Ring Lightweight champion) has about 400 amateur fights with around 27 or so losses. If we convert it to 5th grader style we get 381-26 or something like that...anyways he's pretty good. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I can't be that far off.
NonpareilDempse 06-07-2008, 08:23 PM I am afraid that you have the amateur score for Rocky Marciano off by a bit. His score was 11-3
Dynamite76 06-10-2008, 09:25 AM Marvis Frazier was 56-2
I am afraid that you have the amateur score for Rocky Marciano off by a bit. His score was 11-3
Marciano had four amateur losses that have been well documented beyond those short one page bios that you find on the net claiming he was 11-3, and those more trusted sources do list a fight-by-fight amateur account of his record as an amatuer.
Everett Skehan's bio on Marciano, which was put together with the tremendous help of Rocky's family members (like his brothers), certainly discusses his amateur career in depth, and is one that includes the four losses in the amateur ranks to fighters named Henry Lester (by DQ), Joe DeAngelis, Coley Wallace, and Bob Girard.
A small sapling from the book and on page 73;
"The McGinnis KO was Rocky's final amateur fight. He'd been in a dozen fights, losing four; to Lester, DeAngelis, Wallace, and Bob Girard."
All of those fights were discussed to some length in the book well beyond that short quote if you wished to look into it.
MWMerlino 06-10-2008, 09:57 PM James Toney 20-2
I would've thought that with his skill level he would've had a lot more amateur experience.
DeymarPR 06-12-2008, 12:32 AM Miguel Cotto 95-23
DeymarPR 06-12-2008, 12:33 AM Some Amateur fighters that are vastly talented and have a small amount of fights is most likely because they train really hard spar etc. but only a fight a lil bit, so they make up for it in the gym when they train
Southpaw Great 04-27-2010, 10:52 AM bump..................
Dem Eyes 04-27-2010, 11:03 AM Are there any fighters who had over 100 amateur fights, but failed to make any sort of impact at all on the pro game?
NChristo 04-27-2010, 11:08 AM Mike Tyson was 15-2 I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), heard it mentioned on one of his 1st fights, was awhile ago though so the numbers may be off by 1 or 2.
JAB5239 04-27-2010, 01:28 PM Are there any fighters who had over 100 amateur fights, but failed to make any sort of impact at all on the pro game?
Howard Davis was 125-5 as an amateur and made hardly any impact at all at the pro level given his pedigree and potential.

ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 04-27-2010, 02:15 PM Guys, I can ASSURE you that MOST of the glossy amateur records you run across on these sites are NOT accurate...Ray Robinson for example is WIDELY reported as 85-0 as an amateur but I have his autobio written in the late 1960's where he discusses in detail his loss to Billy Graham...FYI: amateur records are NOT generally kept accurately...only national and international tournaments are really recorded....local fights and regional tourneys, well, its kind of like an honor system...amateurs have a passbook and if they lose one they just get another one...a kid could have 300 fights but his book will say he has 100...Tyson DEFINITELY had more than 2 losses as an amateur (he lost twice to Henry Tillman, was stopped by Al Evans and was DQ'd against Kimmuel Odom...he also lost in R.I. one year to Ernie Bennet...

Was Ernie Bennett a RI fighter? I've never heard of him.

That is the real Ice Man, I been posting with him for years now.
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 04-28-2010, 12:54 AM Yes, John Scully from Connecticut...and, yes, Ernie Bennet was a R.I. boxer back in the late 70's and early 80's...Al Evans out of Chicago was a very capable guy in the early 80's...fought Tyrell Biggs etc...and stopped Tyson...

Did Bennet ever go pro, John? I did a search on boxrec of the name and a lightheavyweight came up out of Boston along that time frame. Do you know what gym Bennet fought out of?
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 04-28-2010, 01:58 AM I doubt that's him... he fought Tyson from what I remember at 201...he was from Providence from what I recall...

Im going back up for a visit in a few weeks, I'll have to ask around some.
Totally unrelated and I know amateur boxing and the pro's are 2 different beasts plus level of opposition etc etc but I'm always amazed by Hearns amateur record.
11 KO's in 150 odd amateur fights then he KO's in 3 rounds the 1st dozen guys he fights in the pros and becomes knowns as one of the best KO artists of all time.
Kept that hidden a bit didn't he :)

I remember him outpointing Ray Gilbody as an amateur, and yes you're quite right, he wasn't by any means a puncher back then.. I think that was at 135!
boxing boy 04-29-2010, 06:30 PM I've read Howard Davis Jr. as 125-5
I thought he would be a great fighter and a great champion.
Wasn't he voted the best fighter at the Olympics(sp) ?
wags23 04-29-2010, 11:45 PM Ernie Bennett was a middleweight, super middle as a pro. Used to train at southside gym in Boston. I believe rollie or PaPa Ray trained him.
