View Full Version : Which boxer has the best fans?
neils7147933 10-22-2004, 08:25 AM I would say
1) Ricky Hatton
2) Joe Mesi
3) Felix Trinidad
And I don't mean guys that post on a forum; I mean fans in attendance at fights, fans who join fan clubs, who travel to follow a fighter, etc.
jabsRstiff 10-22-2004, 08:34 AM I've been to two Trinidad fights in New York City.....& the atmosphere is indescribable.
Trinidad is NOT from New York....but, you'd never know it by the unbelievable turnout & enthusiasm at his fights.
I doubt anyone else could get the same reaction away from theire actual homeland.

Trinidad no questions.
Hatton added me as a fan for what he did outside the ring though, real humanitarian.

New York City, has a HUGE puerto rican community....
Trinidad :D
neils7147933 10-22-2004, 08:46 AM I bet if you walk into a Manchester bar and say, "You know that Hatton guy really isn't that good" that you're taking your life into your hands. The only thing close to the reception he gets on his ring entrance (that, to be fair, does borrow the theme from the local football team as well; a cheap pop?) in the States is Mesi in Buffalo.
But I know that Trinidad has an entire community pulling for him. That's why I said those 3. I wonder if anyone disagrees or would add any different names.
On these boards, Roy and Wlad seem to be way up there, too - but you don't necessarily see it in the crowds. I know part of it is where you from; Zab Judah is from a bigger city than Roy - I doubt Zab gets as big of a pop in Pensacola. But let's say a fight is in Vegas - you know Ricky and Mesi's people are there. The fight gets announced, and they're planning their trips.

Trinidad is drawing over fifteen thousand fans on any given night, that is unheard of these days in boxing...DLH vs Hopkins didnt even sell out MGM Grand and this was supposed to be the next leonard/hagler?
Trinidad is the biggest draw in boxing....
Even mike tyson cant draw like trinidad....
Put trinidad and hatton and mesi in the building together and you would probably break an attendance record lol.
elveiel 10-22-2004, 09:01 AM I bet if you walk into a Manchester bar and say, "You know that Hatton guy really isn't that good" that you're taking your life into your hands.
It would be a risk, going to the M.E.N to watch Hatton is like going to Manchester crown court x 100. Every thug/gangsta in Manchester is there and you wanna see how many have Hatton tatoo's.
Hasnt De La Hoya got thousands of fans who turn up for his weigh ins, etc.

5,000 was at the weighin for dlh vs hopkins...They filled a whole stadium for the dlh vs trinidad fight...
They claim it was all for dlh, but I can bet trinidad had just as many people their...
De la hoya's drawing power as dwindled down a bit.
jabsRstiff 10-22-2004, 09:53 AM New York City, has a HUGE puerto rican community....
Trinidad :D
Right.....but, there's more white people there ....& Joe Mesi & Hatton would attract a small crowd there.
spinksjinx 10-22-2004, 10:35 AM Right.....but, there's more white people there ....& Joe Mesi & Hatton would attract a small crowd there.
Fight fans seem to travel to support their fighters, at the spadafora vs dorin fight 80% were people from dorins hometown...You could tell in the crowd.....
I think it would be a good turnout, If all three went to buffalo and staged fights at the buffalo bills stadium, I would predict a near sellout.....
puppy_dogg 10-22-2004, 10:40 AM i cant believe the MGM did'nt sell out for dlh/hopkins. how many can the MGM hold?
SonnyG8R 10-22-2004, 10:56 AM Nobody had the kind of world wide fan base that Ali had. Tyson brought a lot of people out as well, although half of them wanted to see gim lose. I think DLH has a huge following. The puerto Ricans come out of the woodwork when Tito foghts.
spinksjinx 10-22-2004, 11:28 AM i cant believe the MGM did'nt sell out for dlh/hopkins. how many can the MGM hold?
The MGM grand, holds 17,157 people regularly and im sure with floor seating and such it can hold a mere 20,000 people
The dlh vs hopking fight above the 14,000 mark around 14,700 I believe.
Marjoh 10-22-2004, 11:30 AM Yeah, but when we talk about Trinidad, the question is does it have more to do with his race or his boxing talent? How many well known Puerto Rican boxer are out there? Not many, so I guess it's easy to pick. There are plenty of African-American, Mexican, etc, so the fans are some how scattered (Morales or Barrera?). Just as spinksjinx say, the DLH-Hopkins was supposed to be the next Leonard-Hagler, and yet the crowd aren't as enthusiast as that on Trinidad-Mayorga. I bet you half the crowd on the Trinidad-Mayorga doesn't even know who Hagler and/or Leonard are.
But the same thing can be said to other boxing superstar. Take DLH for example, remember when this guy is popping up on movie premier (red carpet), how many of those screaming fans do you think actually are real boxing fans?
But I know that is not the question. So to answer the question, I would also say Trinidad. Also not that I'm a big Trinidad fan, as a fighter.
abdiel2k3 10-22-2004, 12:17 PM draw would probably have to be tito
when you go to see tito fight
you know what your going to see
hes gonna come after the guy and try to KO him
with Oscar its more of a gamble
which oscar is gonna show up the nite of the fight
hatton has krazy ass fans but who knows if theyd leave england for him
hasnt he only had fights there?
mesi has tons of fans too
they made it to vegas in big numbers
altho after his last 2 fights
Barett and Jirov i dont know if they are still as excited about him
altho they prolly are blind to the jeopardy he was facen in the late rounds of those fights
they prolly saw him dealen with adversidy and not coming up short like i saw it
jabsRstiff 10-22-2004, 12:22 PM Julio Cesar Chavez's fans were comparable to Felix Trinidad's.
I loved when he fought....loved how into it the Mexicans were.

{BrownBomber} 10-22-2004, 02:07 PM R We Forgeting The 133 Thousand Chavez Cramed In The Bull Ring In Mexico. That Is 133 Paying Customers, Or The Only Closed Circuit Fight With Delahoya. I Can Say People Went To See Chavez In Hopes That His Old Body Could Pull The Upset. I Bet Anything That If Chavez Was An American He Would Of Been Bigger Than The Babe.the Biggest Sports Figure The U.s Ever Had.

I was and still am a Roy Jones fan. two losses doesn't erase 15 years of excellence.
Sir_Jose 10-22-2004, 08:46 PM *sighs*
This question really aint up for debate.
Its DLH hands down. SpinksJinx must be high to come on and say that his numbers are dropping considering his last fight made $54 million in profit and is #2 all time on the list for non heavyweight fights.
A fight not selling out has nothing to do with people in attendance. There talking about tickets sold, but you also have to count in what the Casino's gave away for promotions and all the copmanies that were involded recieving tickets to give out. Thise dont count as far as tickets sold. Look at the stadium there wasn't an empty seat in the house.
Trinidad has a very nice following, but it aint close what DLH does.
The two highest grossing non heavyweight fights of all time are
1 DLH vs Trinidad
2 DLH vs Hopkins
DLH has like 8 of the top 10
Compare the PPV numbers for Tito and DLH and there is no question who is the bigger draw.

15 YEARS OF RUNNING! JK ,HE IS A GREAT FIGHTER ONE OF THE BEST. HIS STYLE NEVER APEALED TO ME.

U THINK IM LYING,LOOK IT UP SONNY.
Pound4Pound1986 10-22-2004, 09:23 PM i'll have to say those DLH fans
seriously they gaved dlh a chance against Hopkins, if dlh fights mike tyson they would still believe that dlh can win, they never doubt DLH's skills and that he would win

De la hoya has lost "some" of his drawing power...In all honesty, I expected hopkins vs dlh to surpass the trinidad ppv buys in every aspect....
De La Hoya, isnt the big superstar he was 5-6 years ago...Although he is still in the top 3 of the biggest draws their isnt any doubt about that...

How?
The DLH/Hopkins fight was all sold on DLH's name. Bernard Hopkins although a great fighter couldn't draw flies.
How on earth anyone can try and make the argument that he has fallen off in drawing power when his very last fight made $54 million in profit is amazing.
No he's not one of the top 3 he's # 1 and its not up for debate.
Look up all the numbers and stats you want and they will all tell you the same thing NO ONE outside of the heavyweight divsion even comes close to doing the numbers he does.
Tha Greatest 10-23-2004, 01:19 AM for those sayin tito
he has a whole country to himself
Sir_Jose 10-23-2004, 01:23 AM for those sayin tito

To bad the entire country is the size of Florida
borikua 10-23-2004, 01:35 AM To bad the entire country is the size of Florida
what do u mean with "To bad"..actually we are about the size of connecticut, with a population of about 4 million..Do you mean that Tito doesn't have fans outside or PR..
Id say the Klits got the most fanatical fans, i should know im one of them.

Good post, but you're perhaps answering a different question than I asked. I am asking who has the "best" fans. And if best is defined by quantity or drawing power of the boxer, then my pick, Hatton, doesn't have a chance.
I guess maybe I should ask who's most dedicated to their fighter, in and out of the ring. I probably should have included DLH; that's why I posted to get more names.
BoxingPrincess 10-23-2004, 05:06 PM Chris Byrd cuz he's got me as a fan! :D

Like Sabastien Lopez?
neils7147933 08-09-2007, 08:01 AM I'm going to bump this because it would be interesting to see the answers since the original post is outdated. Mesi can't fight in NY right now and Trinidad is still officially inactive...
msagrain 08-09-2007, 08:02 AM hatton without a doubt
adamk1304 08-09-2007, 08:24 AM Hatton by far, no other fighter's fans would travel nearly 5,000 miles just to see them.
small_warrior 08-09-2007, 09:42 AM Gatti by far, if you go too atlantic city and talk **** about him you are getting raped.
If not oscar de la hoya, the mexican like him, the americans like him and all the women like him lol
I've been to two Trinidad fights in New York City.....& the atmosphere is indescribable.
Trinidad is NOT from New York....but, you'd never know it by the unbelievable turnout & enthusiasm at his fights.

Enter Ricky Hatton my friend.
Being at Castillo vs. Hatton was ridiculous, his fans would follow him anywhere. (England to Vegas is a 12 hour flight and you had 13K in attendance)
Hatton vs. Cotto would sell out Yankee stadium twice.
I dont know if there is an athlete currently in the world that has the type of following that is willing to go to the end of the earth to watch their man perform.
I was in complete awe of the brits and the support they showed for there man!
MickyHatton 08-09-2007, 10:10 AM Over 10,000 fans travelled across the water to Vegas to see Hatton v Castillo so.....
Tony Booth 08-09-2007, 10:12 AM Got to be Hatton. He fights for England.
OptimusWolf 08-09-2007, 11:10 AM yep hatton has rabid support. the number travelling half way round the world for a non mega-fight was amazing. I can't even fathom how many will be in vegas for the Mayweather fight - 25,000??
I'm considering going myself, infact its the fact that a lot of hatton fans will be there that is putting me off. I went to the tszyu and Maussa fights and didn't like the people, too many wannabe gangsters for my taste.
Is anyone offa here going?
oldgringo 08-09-2007, 11:17 AM Hatton seems to be #1 now and Cotto also gets all kind of love from his fans as well. The Garden was electric during the Judah fight and I bet it was only that much crazier being there live (as some posters here could support).
It was insane seeing all of Hatton's fans come so far to watch him. That goes to show that boxing still has some charm.
d4nzal 08-09-2007, 01:06 PM Hatton by far !!!!! If the Hatton - Mayweather fight was in England it would sell out the new 90,000 capacity wembley. Also Calzaghe has a decent following there were 35,000 at the mellenium stadium for the Manfredo fight, expect 50,000 + for the Kessler fight.
they Hatton Vs Castillo weigh is..is something i have never seen before....if anyone has...please post clip...or just tell what fight....atmosphere at the weigh in was better then most on fight night
-Antonio- 08-09-2007, 02:02 PM To be fair, if places like the Phillipenes for example werent so poor, Im sure they would all fly over to the states to follow their fighter too. You don't think 10,000 of them would fly over to see Pacquiao fight if they could?
There is a lower weight fighter in an Asian country that is apparently so popular that something like 80% of the country watches him fight on TV.
