RICKSON’S RETURN

Tanigawa announced Wednesday plans for Rickson Gracie’s return to MMA next spring. The FEG president said he hoped to have Gracie fight the winner of the New Year’s Eve match between Sakuraba and Funaki.

“I want to have Rickson fight as soon as possible next year,” he said. “Even if it is not in our ring, even [if it is] in another organization, I would send these champions to fight.”

While FEG had been building toward a Gracie-Sakuraba match for its New Year’s Eve show, it appears Funaki requested a big-name Japanese fighter for his return to MMA. “I’ve already lost once to Rickson, so Sakuraba is the better choice,” Funaki said. FEG went along with his request and decided Gracie would instead face the winner of the Funaki-Sakuraba match in the spring of 2008.

Funaki retired after a win over Tony Petarra in 1999, then returned to battle Gracie a year later; he was left unconscious by a rear-naked choke, as Gracie improved to 11-0. Neither man has fought since.

If Funaki is able to conquer the skillful but aging Sakuraba, a rematch with the 47-year-old Gracie could be next. If Sakuraba, nicknamed “The Gracie Hunter,” emerges victorious, he will have a chance to take his fifth victory over a Gracie in a match many believe is well overdue.

Don't get me wrong cause I ****ing love Rickson and I feel he was one of the best and would have loved to have seen him compete against likes of Bas, Shamrock, etc druing his and their prime. But after seeing Sakuraba's last performance I just do not see this as a test for Rickson at this moment in his career. It just doesn't make sense, It's likes the senior citizen league of MMA having these guys compete against each other.

To tell you the truth it dont really matter who rick fights, as long as he gets in there.

On the other side I want Rickson to beat up Saku, he aint no gracie killer lol.
Wish I was a Gracie so I can run though that chinaman.

Sakuraba is god. I'll believe Rickson is fighting after he's in the ring and I hear the bell....

Saku is the Gracie slayer.

One reason I love him so much is he essentially single handedly dispelled the myth that is BJJ. Not that its a bad style, but it certainly is not THE style. Saku consistently proved to be the superior grapler, with catch wrestling (note, he was also a top notch college wrestler in Japan).

He's definatly way past it now though, and I'd really like for him to retire (especially after the ****ing brain injury:nonono:).

And get the **** out of here with your racial slurs ****nut.
