DIAS DUMBNICANO 10-05-2007, 10:40 PM Why would we put a guy with 8 fights on the all time lists? Doesn't it say "think before you post" in the rules? Panamaniac 10-06-2007, 02:31 AM Where do you guys rank Johnny "Tucan" McGinty on your all time lists? Are you Johnny Tucan" McGinty? kayjay 10-06-2007, 09:46 AM http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b231/Drewcyfer/Tucan.jpg I wouldn't say he's the most skilled fighter of all time, but what a warrior! revs1227 10-06-2007, 12:39 PM wtf? lol 8 fights? id rank him 192764472 KoolWillie 10-06-2007, 02:12 PM 1926 what the ****? who ever did know no longer remembers DIAS DUMBNICANO 10-07-2007, 02:16 PM wtf? lol 8 fights? id rank him 192764472 That's not Tucan McGinty. Tucan had like 150 fights. BrooklynBomber 10-07-2007, 07:21 PM Yeah, lighter weights back in the 20s did not have much exposure. These little guys usually fought in musty smoked out basements in half legal fights. Boxrec still has trouble collecting any viable information about their records and the only thing we are left with are eye reports from the witnesses. BrooklynBomber 10-07-2007, 07:22 PM That's not Tucan McGinty. Tucan had like 150 fights. I think Tucan was one of the first recorded to be fighting on all oncomers including blacks, which was rare back then. kayjay 10-07-2007, 08:13 PM I think Tucan was one of the first recorded to be fighting on all oncomers including blacks, which was rare back then. I read somewhere that Tucan took on all the leading black little men of his time, with much success. But apparently he was a controversial figure, so history wasn't kind to him. kayjay 10-08-2007, 08:47 PM Yo Bomber, I was reading today at the library that Tucan fought eleven fights in one week, and won nine of them with two draws. Amazing!! BrooklynBomber 10-08-2007, 09:09 PM Yo Bomber, I was reading today at the library that Tucan fought eleven fights in one week, and won nine of them with two draws. Amazing!! But you have to keep in mind that fighting culture was different back then. I highly doubt he fought people that we can call "ranked" in our era. The fights usually happened in the basement of some local bar and his opponents were patrons just looking for to make an extra buck to maintain their drinking habits. Nonetheless it is quite a feat but can we really compare that to the elite of later eras, when boxing was more established? kayjay 10-11-2007, 09:57 AM I can't believe more people aren't talking about Tucan. They must not know their boxing history. The_Bringer 12-20-2007, 05:36 PM I was actually reading about McGinty at the Library this past week, I'm amazed anybody even brought him up actually. Lightweights have never been extremely popular, and especially not back in the era he fought in. His record was 127-11-9 (98 KO's) and he was born in 1883. He was fighting black fighters long before they wer eintegrated into the sport, and he caught a lot of hell for doing it. He was quoted once saying "fighters are fighters, no matter the color" which became his catchphrase. Because of his decision to fight anybody, even blacks, history has not been very kind to him. I found some articles written by Bert Sugar on him, byt there were only 2. I'll try to link them up later. I find it amazing even Bert hardly ever mentions him in his ATG lists, or any other time. It's almost as if history itself has tried to erase his legacy. reedickyaluss 12-20-2007, 05:37 PM 1926 what the ****? who ever did know no longer remembers lmaooooooooooooo hahahahahahhaa im still laughin hahahahaa seriously.... or there dead now... The_Bringer 12-20-2007, 05:42 PM lmaooooooooooooo hahahahahahhaa im still laughin hahahahaa seriously.... or there dead now... It's dumb mother****ers like you two that allow your ignorance to erase the memory of a fighter like McGinty. He was revolutionary, he fought against black people when black people weren't allowed to fight legally. He was the first known public figure in his Country to openly voice the opinion that blacks were equal, as fighters and as people. You guys make me ****ing sick. Most of his fights with blacks were unsanctioned, so Idk if his record is even up there at all. But he was definitely a "forgotten but great" fighter. reedickyaluss 12-20-2007, 05:45 PM It's dumb mother****ers like you two that allow your ignorance to erase the memory of a fighter like McGinty. K-Nan 12-20-2007, 05:54 PM Yeah because only the intelligent guys remember Tucan anyway. Which is why I didn't expect you to. I don't think that's being fair; most people will not remember him- I mean, how much coverage does he get? My dad was the one who clued me in on the guy- so I was lucky. reedickyaluss 12-20-2007, 05:55 PM I don't think that's being fair; most people will not remember him- I mean, how much coverage does he get? My dad was the one who clued me in on the guy- so I was lucky. I guess that's true. I just get pissed sometimes (noteably not always justified) because of how people have tried to erase his legacy. It's ****ing sad, it's not as tragic as boxing related deaths or anything but the man was well ahead of his era. He had an amazing record, fought the best fighters out there (even though at the time blacks were considered to be valued less) and gets no credit. It's not his fault that he didn't know, I just wish more people did know. !! Anorak 12-20-2007, 06:03 PM I'm not sure if you guys are overrating him or not... I've seen ONE piece of footage on him, and it's so hard to tell. The_Bringer 12-20-2007, 06:05 PM I'm not sure if you guys are overrating him or not... I've seen ONE piece of footage on him, and it's so hard to tell. Where did you see the footage? I need to see it. I had no idea footage of his fights even existed, it's difficult as hell to even find pictures of the guy. All the major players in the sport have blacklisted him (boxrec, ring magazine, etc...). reedickyaluss 12-20-2007, 06:06 PM I guess that's true. Just imagine if you were him, busting your ass to be a fighter back then and taking on all fighters, even black fighters who weren't looked upon as euals, let alone allowed to fight legally. And they've basically erased his legacy. !! Anorak 12-20-2007, 06:45 PM Where did you see the footage? I need to see it. It was a strip of film at a private showing once... it only lasted like, 8-10 min, max, but I could see where you guys are coming from with it. What was the story with this private showing if you don't mind me asking? Just asking because I really am a fan of Johnny "Tucan" McGinty, I would love it if it were true that there is indeed footage of him. !! Anorak 12-26-2007, 01:10 PM I can't say too much because I wasn't supposed to have seen it, if you get my meaning. I'll see if... screw that, I'll have to take it to pm when I get more details. |
