His debut album is still the best rap album of all time so he can't be overrated.

When I think overrated I think Lil' Wayne. He's the Samuel L. Jackson of hip hop, hasn't really even ever had a HIT single (think about it...Fireman wasn't a hit) and a lot of his **** is wack. Yet people still like him a lot and rate him.

post-Reasonable Doubt Jay Z!!

Even if you like 2pac you have to admit that he is atleast a bit overrated. Unless you believe he is a god he has to be overrated.

and almost all popular Southern rap is overrated. Lil Wayne is pretty good but way overrated.

Did someone say Nas? Nas' reputation in the mainstream is only mediocre so if you believe that he is mediocre as a rapper then he can't be overrated. Do you know how many non-rap fans don't even know who he is? Someone like that can't be overrated.

And I'm not even getting into the substance of the claim that he is overrated. :nonono:

I'm not trying to put anyone down, but the south just about killed Hip-Hop. I remember back in the day (85-93ish) (yes I'm old) where lyrics were the most important part of the record. Now all they do is throw in a catchy beat....make a freggin' dance to go along with it and they go platnium. Straight garbage!

If you want to hear some tight lyrics listen to

1. Just about anything Big Daddy Kane
(P.S. he even ghost wrote most of Biz Markies rhymes)
2. Rakim
3. KRS-One
4. A Tribe Called Quest
5. Black Sheep (yes...black sheep...just listen!!)
6. Black Moon
7. Gangstarr (Guru)

This is just a small sampling.

Jay-Z, T.I.,Lil Wayne,B.I.G.,Pun.

Jay-Z=just because the guy calls himself the "greatest rapper alive", it doesnt mean he's telling the truth. Solid catalog, but overrated by most fans. Top 10? No way, Top 20? Most likely.

T.I.=very average skills, mostly pointless songs. Gets way too much credit for sub-par work.

Wayne=again with the calling himself "the best". He's certainly better than T.I., but overrated by magazines and BET alike.

B.I.G.=one of the greatest ever? Skill-wise, of course. G.O.A.T.? Of course not.

Pun=premature death leads to him being overrated. Not top ten, maybe top twenty.

Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers ever. Slick punchlines in all his songs, can make a club banger, a nice concious track, a hood story, or just some sick rhymes. He has MANY great tracks and few ****ty ones (pretty much only Vol 3).

Also, best flow Ever. Period. He is not overrated one bit.

Overrated I think TI (who blows), Lil' Wayne (who tries to be pretty much everybody such as Jay-Z, The Clipse), Big Pun (Capital Punishment is not a classic...btw...).

so in that way I think he was overrated. tupac was the best, biggie cracks my top five maybe

I found this tidbit of info on eopinions.com...its hilarious. They have 50 at #4 of the 5 most overrated rappers ever! You'll never guess who the other 4 are...

4. 50 Cent

At least Method Man was good at one point in his career, 50 was NEVER good. This guy is so bad. All he uses is a simple A-A, B-B rhyme pattern and never tries anything fancy. He has the vocabulary of a 5th grader and the voice of a mental patient’s worst Al Pacino impression. His whole career is based upon him getting shot. Those nine bullet holes are the best things that ever happened to him. It’s the only street credentials he has, besides being a crack baby. 50 doesn’t seem to refrain from using extremely simple rhymes such as Dub/club or Bacardi/party. The latter is the only rhyme I have heard by him that is more than one syllable. 50 is supposed to be the second coming of Pac or whatever but I think he is the second coming of Nelly (another fake gangster). 50 cent only raps about riches, guns and how he got shot. He doesn’t ever try to make meaningful rap. Not one song. He tried with “Many men” to make a kind of a deep song but…What the hell was that? Another “I got shot”anthem? 50 tries to be a “P-I-M-P” but he is just so wack its not even funny. The video for that song is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. A pimp convention? And then he says “Im a P-I-M-P, plus I got the magic stick” and he shows them his “magic stick” which glows of gold (nice job ripping Austin Powers and Goldmember). Wait! Did he just show them his “stick”? What’s up with that? I thought these guys were pimps. 50 is not only overrated but probably the worst rapper ever.

Kool G Rap is the G.O.A.T. Period. End of discussion. No debate is neccessary.

If you don't believe me, ask any one of the rappers you've all been discussing in this thread. I know this is a "who's overrated thread" but I see people slipping in their G.O.A.T picks. It's not Biggie or Pac or anyone else. It's Kool G Rap. End of Story.

The fact that I have to keep pointing this out to "rap fans" is a tragedy.

A god damn tragedy...

It's pathetic that greatness is measured by album sales. Tupac has sold far more albums than any other rapper, and it's the only reason he's consistantly called the greatest rapper ever. If you look at other "top-10 rappers", you'll find the same odd coincidence, right down the line, almost without any exception.

People need to learn to think for themselves. They get indoctrinated with this corperate bull**** and wind up proclaiming what the market proclaims. You don't even realize that you don't actully believe Tupac is the best of all time. Music is in a sad state.

The overwhelming evidence supports my comment.

Now tell me how stupid I am and jump up and down screaming and yelling about Tupac or Biggie or whatever you want. Either way, I won't be reading about it.

For all you nostalgic heads. Do you listen to anything new? I hate how poeple completely just bash everything new that's out today. Don't get me wrong I love the classics but you gotta mix it up.

How is 50 overrated? No one and I mean no has labeled 50 a great lyricist. Just because a guy is popular doesn't mean he's overrated it just means he has a big fan base.

And Pac to me is the best and the closest artist I can relate to. Jay is over a bit. But he's not a bad artist he's actually quite good.

I guess I can be considered one of the guys that misses "the old days", but I listen to plenty of current hip hop. I bought 4 new hip hop releases in the last 2 weeks.

Yeah I know you listen to new stuff. I always see yout talking about new albums. I love the older stuff as well. Especially Death Row albums. Any of Ice Cube's first 4 albums which are incredible to me. And I listen to Wu and Big. And Nas I keep my copy of Illmatic with me most of the time.

Ay-yo I warned you, now all *****z could do is mourn you
I'm born to kill and still thrilled, I put it on you
There's no regrets, remorse, only results and loneliness
Only the strong survivors strive through life as warriors
All of us die, some of us kill, even massacred
Who wanna try? Punisher will if you ask for it
I'm hazardous for your health and hell's your next stop
For real my ****'s ****ed the world has just stopped...
[pause]
I'm not the one you should be underestimatin'
Come test your fate an' I guarantee I'll be under investigation
You can't handle the whole, I'll slam you on your skull
Or we can go blow for blow like Evander and Bowe, ya never know
However tho' I still hold the title
When all my rivals the chance to dance who missed the homicidal
Hand on the bible I swear to defend my crown
I've been around since forever and never let it touch the ground
Don't **** around and catch a rude awakenin'
My crew's basically waitin' patiently for you to move your patrons in
Then we'll surround you, form Desert Storm and pound you
Look around you, Terror Squad's everywhere like Soundview
The Boogie Down do it like nobody, who are we?
The foundation, you're facin' a whole army...

how the **** is that overrated?

I'm from Louisiana, and yet I still agree with you. Groups like the Geto Boys, K-Rino (for those that don't know of him, one of the best lyricists ever), Master P (he never was that good a rapper, but about 12 years ago, No-Limits' **** was worth listening to) and UGK, were representing the south really well. Now, with all the newer ****, I can't even listen to most of the souths' stuff anymore. It all sounds the same, with someone coming up with some new dumbass dance step or some idiotic catch phrase. (Snap yo' fingers? When I was comin' up, only ***gots stood around snapping their fingers and rolling their necks around!)

As far as overrated rappers go, here's my list:

1.P.Diddy (has he ever done a decent song by himself?)
2. Kanye (enough has already been said about him)
3. Lil Wayne
4. Lil John (I know he's not really a rapper, but damn, he still sucks to have to listen to)
5. 50 Cent (Lately he's sounding a lot like a lot of other rappers, unable to rap about anything but rims and money)
6. Manny Fresh and Baby (really, do I need to speak on this one?)
7. Mike Jones (don't get me started)

For the love of god, I honestly try to mix it up (I really do), but I am just not impressed with what people are putting out. My kids make fun of me beacuse I don't listen to any hip hop past 93ish.

Yes he is,and alot of ppl Down South Im sure would agree.Alot of ppl around me agree, but Im not region biased. Most of my friends and alot of ppl around my area's think that Jay-z is better then Lil Wayne.Easily.

Nas's style is the same,he doesnt switch his flow up.Jay is versatile with his flow.

Tupac Shakur is like Ali.

They're both HUGE legends which can draw on to criticism of how they can be overrated.

Like when people draw up 'how good Ali would be in this era' topic, you could almost say the same for Tupac.

Tupac would be horrible in this era though..

But the kind of music someone makes has a whole lot to do with producers. Here we go giving rappers credit for the work of producers/DJs again.

Nas has less variety in his flow but his flows (not just lyrics) are FAR more involved than Jay Z's (I'm not even going to talk about Wayne, that is getting ridiculous) . In other words, Jay Z's flows are often varied but many of them are just kindergarten, anyone could write lyrics for those flows.

At least NAS is original....I give him credit for that. I heard a mix on the local station one day and the guest DJ would play the orginal of a record and then Jay Z's...basically Jay Z bit at least 15-20 other rappers lyrics verbatim.

Categories and Criteria for Selection
The following MCs were chosen for their lyrical capabilities. The list does not reflect sales or mainstream success of these artists. They were evaluated on a 25-point scale based on: originality, longevity, lyricism, social impact, flavor, battle skills, consistency, charisma, poetic value, substance, versatility, vocal presence, live performance, flow and delivery, among other factors.

Eligibility:
To be eligible, artists must have:
a) Attained a longevity time frame of 7 years or more
b) i)Released 2 solo albums or ii)1 solo album and 2 group albums or iii) 4 group albums
c) Been musically active anywhere between 1987 and 2007

Tupac is in the top ten but I think the top 5 would have to call your bull****....

5. The Notorious B.I.G.
Lacking any real social message, Biggie possessed enough pizzazz to sway audiences young and old.
Best Album: Ready to Die

4. Nas
Some call him a street prophet for his poetic, conversational-style lyrics. An absolute master of lyrical extravaganza, Nas often paints a picture of urban life in his rhymes.
Best Album: Illmatic

3. Big Daddy Kane
The King of Swagger, Kane dazzled the rap world with his peculiar flair and flamboyant wardrobe. Countless others (including Jay-Z, Biggie, and Snoop) would later adopt his player persona.
Best Album: Long Live the Kane

2. KRS-One
The Teacha transformed the violent brusque of ghetto life into a story of uplift and self-awareness, starting with BDP's incendiary debut, Criminal Minded.
Best Album: By All Means Necessary (w/ Boogie Down Productions)

1. Rakim
While others bragged about their guns, Rakim celebrated his swagger. A smooth, laid-back flow, intense lyricism, and positivity were his stately hallmarks.

You call Tupac the greatest of all time ahead of these 5 MC's....you really should reconsider checking back into rehab.

You cannot conclude whose the G.O.A.T. just based on some poll conducted a website or whatever.. I mean look at MTV, they had Gay-Z at number 1.......

You have to look at the whole concept behind hip hop/rap and not because about.com says so, you have to look at how the rapper and his songs affected others and the world.... Pac will be the most talked about rapper ever, like it or not, meaning he is probably the most influential ever, It also depends on how you define 'greatest', you have to look at the whole package and Pac as a rapper had that... So even if he misses out on top spot, he CERTAINLY above many other rappers/Mc's should get a top 5
spot.....

In reality this debate will go on forever in the outside world, so you cannot make your final judgement based on about.com...

I firmly believe that most of the people who hate on Jay-Z are people who have no idea Reasonable Doubt even exists. How can you not at least respect such a classic?

It wasn't a poll...they put together criteria and established eligibility...so It's not like you had some 11 year old voting 16 times. Here's the link and criteria

http://rap.about.com/od/toppicks/ss/Top50Emcees.htm

Interesting list, but I disagree with Benie Segal being anywhere close to a top 50 list let alone ahead of Guru. He overrated Lauren Hill too. She's good, not top 20 good, come on now. MC Lyte too, it's good to show love for the ladies, but jesus top 30? Right below AZ, Kweli, and Ghost. Laughable.

So true, as a teen i loved pac, but **** me after bumping his meaningful albums he tends to go on about the same old thing, after a while, it gets a little stale, these days, i cant listen to that **** anymore.

"Bury me a g"
"Bury me with weed"
"When we ride"
"We Thugs"

Same old ****.

His songs so have a depth and meaning to them which surpass those of other rappers, but lyrically there are better rappers out there, As a kid i used to hate biggie, but lyrically, he is more skilled than Pac, Contentwise Pac is better than Biggie.

I credit the repetitiveness of his thug life material to the fact that he put out so much material in such little amount of time. I was never a huge fan of that side to him anyway.

I like the I Aint Mad At Ya, Dear Mama, Me Against The World, Keep Ya Head Up Pac much better than the Hail Mary, Hit Em Up Pac.

To put Guru at 44 is a serious injustice....he belongs in the top 20 (at least) if not top 15 and move Redman down a few notches. The more I think of it Tupac at 7 isin't that bad.....but Tupac GOAT ahead of the blastmaster (KRS-One)....never.

Ludacris.

No one finds it cool when you have to make it sound like every single sentence has 20 exclamation points.

Decent lyrics, not great. Usually ****ty background music, and undoubtedly one of the worst voices in hip hop.

And people say he is great. Absolutely terrible.

Most of my friends don't even know who Tech N9ne is. Don't know who overrates him. His beat selection can be terrible sometimes, but lyrically, he's very unique and talented. Listen to the final verse of "The Industry is punks".

Pun is certainly overrated. Gotta disagree about Rakim and Nas. Lyrically, no one has came close to matching Rakim's rhyme skill. Nas is the greatest MC of the past 15 years, IMO.

I think Pun was sick, but too many people have labeled him the G.O.A.T. or one of the top 5 ever, if he wouldnt have died so early in his career, he had the potential, but he never reached it.

i agree pun made fat Joe but now puns gone fat joes just **** i think pun must of writ his lyrics

as for people putin Puns name in an overrated rapper thread man that **** just aint funny pun would kill any rapper on this planet to day

He had the best delivery, a great sense of wordplay, and it was as though every line he threw was a knockout punch. I would just sit back and listen to his album and think, "Man, how could anybody think stuff up like that?". It was pure Hip Hop, plain and simple.

Pac is overrated. Too many people proclaim him as the G.O.A.T...for me that is conclusive proof that he's overrated.
, Way
Nobody RATES P.Diddy, 50 Cent, Kayne West....surely?? Damn, if they do, then they too are overrated just for being rated. Jay-Z's earlier stuff is alright...he's not the best but he's miles ahead of a lot of the new ****.

Hip hops best MC's were doing their thing between 87-94. That was without doubt the peak era for the genre. Nothing since has convinced me otherwise.then you must have missed a little rapper named eminem then huh? because, he could rap better than most rappers from any era of hip hop, and this is a fact. hip hop peaked again during the eminem era, where he was basically a one man army and he took over hip hop doing this, and did it brilliantly.
