View Full Version : Golden Age of Philippine Boxing
THRILLAinmanila 09-30-2007, 12:38 PM THERE'S A NEW WBO MINIMUMWEIGHT CHAMP !
Filipino Donnie Nietes just won the vacant WBO Minimumweight Championship by beating ****sawan Kratingdaenggym of Thailand via UD tonight in Cebu, Philippines ! In the highly physical and give-and-take 12-rounder, Nietes floored the unbeaten #2 ranked Thai in the 4th round, and fought his way to a well-deserved unanimous decision victory.
He thus claims the title vacated by Ivan Calderon,
and becomes the 4th Filipino world champ in 2007,
the first time-ever that 4 Filipino world champs reigned simultaneously,
namely:
1. Florante Condes - IBF Minimumweight Champion
2. Nonito Donaire - IBF/IBO Flyweight Champion
3. Gerry Penalosa - WBO Bantamweight Champion
4. Donnie Nietes - WBO Minimumweight Champion

Or the majority of the world's population will have Pinoy blood. Believe it or not, there are Pinoys even in the tiny Bermuda.

He did his job well IMO.

We had a heavyweight fighter in the early 1900's who became a champ. (Either regional or continental I forgot)
