View Full Version : Eating punches
Down4TheCount 09-23-2007, 11:02 PM this probobly sounds stupid but i thought id ask anyways . ( im a serious newb when it comes to sparring and training , like weeks into it , mostly just spar for the fun of it . ) so the other day me and my friend whos also pretty new to the whole boxing thing were hittin the bags , doin some basic trainin and w.e so for fun we decided to jump in the ring a spar for a bit. i put on head gear he didnt so naturally i was only gonna body punch him just cause i didnt wanna be cheap .
so anyways he only hit me good twice , the rest i mainly blocked . one was an uppercut that hit me on the forehead , didnt really hurt but i definately felt him connect .
the other one however was pretty much a flush right hook to the temple , now pretty much my question is does anyone else actually enjoy eating a huge shot and jus shruggin it off and smilin in a guys face after ? it almost feels as satisfying as actually landing the punch . sort of like validating your chin or whatever? ( granted i was wearing headgear , ****ty anceint headgear at that lol )
Versastyle 09-23-2007, 11:05 PM I dont take pride at getting hit.I feel disgusted.
On one hand, it's nice to know you can take a punch as it eliminates some of the initial fear of stepping into the ring, but on the other hand a ****ty defense is nothing to be proud of. I'm desperately trying to learn and incorporate more head movement and the ability to keep distance with my jab and how to set up combos because I'm tired of getting tagged constantly. Over time it gets discouraging to continue to step into the ring and get ****ing serviced. Trust me, taking huge shots gets old quick.
greengloves 09-23-2007, 11:17 PM im in the same boat as you bein new new and all. I like it when im hit with a good shot and can shrug it off but dont get too proud or you may feel like you dont need to protect yourself. Its equally satisfying to slip a punch with bad intentions and make THEM swallow their teeth, actually more satisfying.

well yes i think you put it best , it was pretty much what i was trying to get at . of course you dont WANT to get hit , but like you said eating that big punch and being able to feel ok , no wobbley , not rocked , jus shrug it off and keep on going , its a good feeling . i think you said it right , it just helps eliminate that initial fear of getting hurt real bad .
this was especially nice considering , a friend of mine trained boxing for 2 years , hes waaay smaller than me , heck even a few yrs younger , im overweight right now ( by my standards at least ) and hes in like tip top shape so naturally he was MUCH faster than me . he was pretty much the first time i ever sparred , it was extremely discouraging for the main reason that he hit me pretty damn hard in the jaw while i was tired and breathing heavily though my mouth ( like i said im in bad shape right now ) and i continued to fight until the end of the round . after the round was over my jaw hurt , like it was really akward and i felt alot of disconfort when trying to chew .
just this alone almost put me off boxing then i looked at the facts and figured more than anything , hes good , i sucked and though it really hurt my jaw this time i dunno if this is an extremely common thing ?
so i was just wondering about your experiences starting out ? anyone thoughts and stories.
I don't like getting hit until I actually do - then I like it.

Exact same feeling never hurts at that moment but a feeling of dissapointment and diguset is present.
fraidycat 09-24-2007, 01:02 AM I have found that there are few things in life as satisfying as having someone throw a big punch at me and miss. :boxing:
Salty 09-24-2007, 04:12 AM I love that too, slipping punches is my favourite thing to do. Shows that you can move faster than he can throw a punch, gets demorolising if they miss a few in a row.

im gonna have to agree with this statement. i do everything in my power not to get hit. i do anything i can (legally) not to be hit. its better to make him miss and smile in his face than take a huge shot and smile in his face, because they say if u smile at him and taunt, it means u know u got hit BIG and u got hurt...
punchDrUnK MONK 09-24-2007, 10:08 PM i think its much more satisfying to make ur opponent MISS a big shot and counter him right back, then smile at him :P
but i know where ur coming from, in the warriors spirit, u jus go to war. inside exchanges, i dont mind getting hit... call me crazy lol, but what dont kill ya only make u stronger... but too many shots can end a boxers career, so if u like that end of the game ur prolly a defensive fighter, foucs on covering up and letting them hit ur gloves n elbows
then shrug it off, he wont be happy he didnt land much... winky wright his ass
but taking a good shot and being fine is always a great feeling. specially when u answer right back..
i like ur warriors spirit. jus dont go get ur ass knocked out :P

As do I am I'm not looking to have a tore up face like Gatti or turn into Ali years down the line.
TyrantT316 10-01-2007, 01:27 PM the problem comes when you take that punch "thinking" that's their best punch...
then leaving yourself open for an even harder punch where 5min later, you're being picked up off of the canvas onto a stool and asking "did I get knocked out?"
remember, not every punch an opponent throws is their hardest punch...also remember that sometimes you may see that punch he throws and it have less effect than a punch you don't see...
fighters change speeds of their punches to try to set you up...some purposely hit with you weaker shots just to land leather, or to make you think that's all they've got, or to blind you into watching out for that one punch just to surprise you with a different punch you're not expecting...
it is a prideful thing...yes...but don't disregard defense just because you want to prove you can take a punch
I don't care how good a chin is...one may not be able to be KOed with one punch...but there is only so much one's chin can take...and there is only one way to find that out...to be knocked out...fighters with great chins end up suffering most damage because they CAN take a lot and are WILLING to take a lot and DO end up taking a lot...
and who wants that?
Versastyle 10-01-2007, 06:17 PM I do admit, when I get popped.I make damn sure I dont get popped with the same punch in the same round.
ForemanCrossArm 10-03-2007, 03:39 PM i know that once i start fighting ammy fights that i'm going to be eating punches left and right. but i don't plan on "boxing" to start out, i'm not even going to "stalk." i'm gonna be runnin forward, hells yeh! pressure won't be my game later, but against schmucks starting out that's how you pick up confidence, wins, and, well, confidence.
Ringo 10-03-2007, 03:48 PM Like people have said - its nice to know you can take a shot. My first few sparring sessions I practically did nothing but eat punches. It eliminated fear, yea (like people have said), but the downside is that the next day you feel like ass, your head is heavy, and you feel sluggish. This even happened to me in a few sparring sessions. I got in with a few guys up a couple of weight classes and ate some big shots. By round 3 I was still on my feet and moving forward, but there was no chance I was going to be able to catch the guy. So in general - yea its nice to know, but on the other hand, don't bank on your ability to wade through stuff (not saying you do).
ForemanCrossArm 10-03-2007, 03:59 PM haha, this may sound really bad, but.. in all of my athletic abilities I def. feel that my ability to take a punch is probably what will matter more to my career than anything else. i don't plan on being a chuck wepner, i don't want to just put my face out there like a shield or some ****, but i don't want to have to wade through to find my shots. i'm going to throw and get in there and throw some more. joe frazier is my preacher.
