I'd always step in to protect a mate - in fact the only fights I've ever been in have been ones where I've been backing someone up.

As far as the sport thing goes. I'll leave any aggro on the pitch for sure, but if it's a social game and someone is just blatantly cheating or fouling, I'll call a foul on them and next time they probably won't be invited back.
