View Full Version : Speed up my combos!
One more 09-20-2007, 01:06 AM So I've finally gotten the hang of throwing my weight into each and every punch... but now I'm having a little trouble throwing my combos hard AND fast. I know I was off balance cuz I wasn't stepping to the side w/ my lead foot when i threw (I was completely in a straight line). But now that I have my balance I feel my combos losening up. Anyone got any exercises for me to speed up my combos and make them explode too?
Versastyle 09-20-2007, 01:59 AM Do mitt work with your trainer,it helps it. Also explode on the bag and such. Common sense things.

Boxing Coach OG 09-20-2007, 04:15 AM I like GENE TUNNEY'S old school technique: get you a rubber ball and squeeze it throughout the day. 400 times for the lefthand/wrist; 200 times for the righthand/wrist (assuming you're an orthodox fighter, just the reverse for southpaw). Why a rubberball? Because the explosiveness comes out of the turn of the wrist at the END of the punch and to have that you need strong wrists.
Meanwhile, your SPEED can be developed with the SPEEDBAG, of course. The MITTS are good. But dont have your trainer assist you by moving the mitts in to meet your punch as you see so many fighters doing these days. While it looks good--that actually SLOWS down your REFLEXES to me. Just have him hold the mitts like they did in the old school days: STATIONARY and you COME to the mitts with every punch. For explosiveness, have your trainer position the mitts at different angles suddenly while you explode on them with a punch. That's how you develop EXPLOSIVENESS and SPEED. The speedbag, just gives you speed more than explosiveness. The MITTS when done rite, give you BOTH.
You can get those cheap rubberballs at like a FAMILY DOLLAR store...or get a tennis ball.
Good luck with that.
Salty 09-20-2007, 04:25 AM Another good one for wrist strength in a bucket filled with rice, grab and twist at the rice you'll soon feel it. Strengthening your forearm is also pretty important for punching speed. I've noticed a big increase in speed since starting my new job since my wrists and forearms have gotten stronger.

That's exactly what I was gonna suggest. Do intense work on the mitts. Your trainer will push you hard and tell you to keep throwing harder and faster while tossing out different combos to try out. You might even find one or more combos that you execute very accurately to incoporate into your fight plan.
A.Jay 09-20-2007, 10:29 AM hi this is kind of off topic but i dont see any point in starting a new thread for it...... i have noticed that sometimes i lean back slightly when i throw hooks when i realise im doing it i stop my self and try to make sure i'm shooting the punch from the hip and leaning in the right direction but it slows me down when im constantly haveing to think about doing it....i know that the only way to get better is practice till it becomes insticnt but is there anything i could do to make sure i don't get into bad habbits

As your said, you have to drill it in your brain and go over it alot,on the bag and in your head. When you're sparring think about it also, and when you dont do it and you go back to the old way, just remember and set it straight when you try it again.
A.Jay 09-20-2007, 06:50 PM cheers for the advice and to the other guy who said about doing it with a trainer of course that is the best but i was just thinking more about when im training at home i go to the gym 4 days a week twice in london with my dads friends who will train me one to one for free witch is defenitly great for technique and a privilege to be able to get more experience faster than others..... but i just recently joined my first boxing club and i find that sometimes when i think im punching sloppy they wont mention anything witch sorta confuses me but i geuss there just focusing on my fitness seeing how im new to the game

There also could be a star at your gym and they focus there attention to them,or you havnt showed them how serious you are about boxing yet, suck ass trainers, just there for a check. Could be one of those.
Boxing Coach OG 09-20-2007, 09:58 PM Speed--thanks for the props. I see you up there in Philly--hometown of one of my fave fighters MATTHEW SAID (from the 80s). That fight he had with tuff JERRY MARTIN was a good one back in the day.
Yeah, I do coach fighters here in St. Louis. Both amateurs (and pros now too). I also coach track/distance runners: long distance and middle distance (400-mile). I boxed for about 13 years myself going back to the mid
60's including amateurs and being a professional sparring partner.....So I learned a lot from watching, studying and fighting the old school heads
While we're still on speed, another lil thing boxers can do is CLAP ya hands as fast as possible for as long as possible. It's just a real simple exercise to build those wrists and FINGERS (which go underrated in their importance to punching)
May you continue to do well and accomplish your goals in boxing.
