this is me and my ex trainer.. he taught me most of what i know. we used to just go head to head and trade punches.. but neither of us has been in the gym for a long time so we decided to go easy. i'm the one in green gloves, he's wearing the black ones. do you see any glaring mistakes im making? anything i'm doing well? what should i work on?

thats ur ex trainer? dude looks like he is 17 years old... anyway, both u guys need to get into a gym and learn from a real trainer. balance and movement are definitely off and ur makin some fundamental mistakes. i dont feel like goin into detail cuz the post will be too long, but...... get to a gym.

that was constructive criticism. ur balance and movement are very off. no offense to u. also u have to keep ur hands up and snap ur punches more, instead of jus puttin them out there.

For starters, what you're doing, while it looks fun, I wouldn't consider sparring. No offense.

That said, let's move on to constructive criticism.

You're pawing the jab. Snap it out and right back to your face in one movement. Think of snapping a towel. That CRACK! is what you want at the end of your jab.

You're reaching out to bat away the punches. Keep your guard tight and move your body to interpose your arms and gloves. Start with a "binoculars" guard; extended guards and parrying are advanced techniques.

When your opponent rushes in, you're cowering, putting your hands out and sticking your head down. :ugh: I don't know where you learned that, but stop it. Immediately. Keep your back straight and side-step.

You flinch away from the punch most of the time instead of slipping. Keep your eyes on your opponent ALWAYS. This is a corollary to the above paragraph.

Your footwork needs serious help; in those vids, you're just walking around half the time. Start with the basics. Footwork is the most basic of basics but you can't box well without good footwork. You should learn to move your feet correctly before you ever throw a punch, IMO.

"He who would learn to fly must first learn to stand, then walk. One does not fly into flying." You're doing far too much for someone who's learned so little. IMO, you need another trainer.

Short of another trainer, go HERE: http://how-to-box.com/boxing/boxing_basics

And HERE:

And memorize EVERYTHING this guy has posted on boxing instruction.

it doesnt sting me, it feels right. if he's postin a sparring vid on here, then he needs to snap his punches. if he's takin it easy and jus ****in around, turn the camera off. dude isnt awful at all, he has some skills, but he def needs to add snap to the punches, stop pawin the jab, and work on balance and movement, and footwork, and tighter better D.

I'm assuming neither of you have ever stepped foot in a real boxing gym. At least I'm hoping that is the case.

Get proper instruction first. Learning the wrong way is worse, than a waste of time. It's harder to unlearn bad form than to learn things right the first time.

My suggestion would be to work on conditioning as best you can before you can find a gym. You'll be able to progress much faster if you've got more pushups/situps/miles/pullups under your belt.
