Two Meals a Day-
Breakfast: five strips of bacon, 3 soft-boiled eggs, 2 glasses of fruit juice (I'm guessing, OJ), two cups of tea.

Dinner: two pounds of steak.

Daily Routine-
WALKs seven miles in seven pound shoes, shadow boxes for four rounds, skip rope for nine minutes (to Night Train, obviously).
[also says he rode a "red bike" around sometimes]

Proof of the natural born boxer.. ? I'd tend to say so.

i think the seven miles with 14 pounds strapped to your feet might be kinda intense. especially for someone only 6'1"-ish.

nah no way that is sonny liston's regimen i dont believe that for a second. where did u read that at i wanna see proof? a top heavyweight fighter who was one of the most devastating punchers only did some walking and skipping and shadowboxing?????

sorry but that seems a little far fetched....

wow, how little ye know. first of all, his jump rope routine was legendary.. so much so that before the Patterson re-match he did a Vegas show that was basically him jumping to James Browns' "Night Train."

And it came from The Devil and Sonny Liston and that article originally came from, I believe (since I don't have the book open infront of me, but I'm fairly sure) it was the New York Times, possibly NY Journal, I'm almost certain it was a NY News Paper, however.

The man was the best HW of all-time. When he wasn't asked to carry a fighter (or throw a fight period) he was a walking, talking, non-reading & writing, drunkard, rapist KO machine.

i mean damn thats incredible if that was his routine. its jus so little work for a heavyweight fighter it amazes me. good find tho...

That cant be routine because i remember in one of my older ring magazines theres a picture of him doing his neck work and it says he does all different movements to strengthen his neck, so that cant be his routine. :boxing:

he did other things for other fights, it really just shows how little he thought of Patterson, IMHO. Although, he did bring 3 sparring partners to vegas for the re-match. I copied that directly from the text when I posted, that is what he did, straight up.

what's the source on this?

this reminds me alot of that tyson daily routine that people keep posting up on the internet but the original source was never known.

the line "i'm guessing it was OJ", in the liston routine, is very reminiscent of the the line "orange i think it was", when the excerpt talks about mike drinking fruit juice.

It is from THE DEVIL AND SONNY LISTON. and the book mentions other articles where it talks about how much he likes OJ, so that's why I figure its OJ.

In all the training footage I have seen of him he uses the heavybag and speedbag a fair bit. He was often seen hitting the speed bag off the hook because his punchers were so hard.

Yes, he did "touch" bags. He also knocked a heavy bag off the hook, STRAIGHTENING THE HOOK IN THE PROCESS. But, in preperation for his first bout with Patterson, that's all he did.

Thats funny coz I found this

Spectators are charged 99 cents to watch Liston work out, and they're not
disappointed. He opens with four rounds of shadow boxing with 175 pounder
Allan Thomas. Next came three rounds on the heavy bag, three rounds on the
speed bag, and his signature training method, his rope skipping to the strains
of Jimmy Brown and the Flames' "Night Train." The record plays for 3 minutes
and 35 seconds. Liston goes through six playings. To finish up, Liston gets a
medicine ball hurled at his stomach a number of times, and performs 64 situps
on a specially designed board. An onlooker remarked "How will Patterson go
about hurting this man?" Liston next meets the press, and he's his usual
pleasant self when asked if Patterson will be the toughest opponent he's
faced. "Can I tell if this winter's gonna be cold? No. And I can't tell if
Patterson's gonna be tough. I might get rid of him quick. He might get rid of
me quick."

(...his signature training method, his rope skipping to the strains
of Jimmy Brown and the Flames' "Night Train."...) Sorry, it's a year later, and this isn't related: There are two versions of "Night Train" , the original by Jimmy -Forrest-, and a sped up version, (almost to the point of being a different tune), by -James- Brown. I understand that Sonny enjoyed both, but the only one I've heard him work out to was the Forrest recording.

He meant the Pre-Patterson Routine you retards not for all the fights.
