OK I bin boxing a while now and never really got into weight lifting only sometimes in circuits, but I wanna start doing it for extra strength in my arms and power, I weigh 65 kg I don't wanna bulk up I wanna stay trim and toned like I am at the moment but just gain the power and strength side for my body, just curious how often boxers on here do weights and do you include them in your normal boxing workout.

Well im not a boxer, but i try not to do them more than 4 times a week, as i feel you body has to rest and muscles need time to grow..thats how i think of it anyway. If u dnt wanna bulk up that do alot of reps (15-20) on a comfortable weight this will also help with stamina. Thats my advise anyway, dnt feel weights are nessacery for boxing i think it was Kevin Rooney who say" Weight Training has as much to do with Boxing as Cheese cake" (or something like that)

Lots of boxers do them. Ricky Hatton, Winky Wright, Bernard Hopkins, I can go on and on. Dont max out and do compound exercises. And you should be fine. Train for explosiveness.

Nearly all pro boxers use weights apart from the ones being trained by manny steward and his kronk fighters. Even floyd uses them and look how fast he is.
I personally try to use weights around 4 times a week and each day training a different body part ie. arms one day then shoulders and then chest on another. I find it really helps my power and i've gained some decent size as well which is a plus. :boxing:

Yeah Floyd started lifting when he started moving up in weight. He is pretty ripped right now. Not lanky like he used to be.

2 times a week, wednesday and saturday, but i never jus do weights alone, i always either do cardio afterwards or bag training or conditioning, etc.

weights shouldnt take time away from actual boxing training and conditioning work, it should be added when u have time for supplemental training without affecting ur boxing training, imo.

this is a myth and will do little for a fighter. boxers shoud lift heavy weights for low reps as that is mainly for strength without mass gains. again, gaining mass and gettin bulky is mostly all diet, so there is no need to worry about getting to big. lift heavy weights with low reps, stretch good, and dont neglect hand speed drills, and weights will greatly benefit u...

i normally only lift weights 4 times a week twice a day and maintian a average body wieght of 148lbs eating mostly fish, fruit, veggies, and the odd mr.noodle (pasta). i follow a progressive overload routine ex:12reps at 60-10reps at 70-8reps at 80-6reps at 100 and everyweak i increase the last 6 reps by 5-10lbs depending on my progress. you gotta make sure you keep at your boxing workouts aswell tho.

i agree that low reps with heavy weights are best for limit strength but you wil almost certainly gain some size as you go if you dont eat enough protein to gainn this size you will not get stronger and you may start to suffer some signs of overtraining.

Just going on what ive been told man, but doing few reps on a Heavyweight will increase strength and so Muscle mass, and he didnt wanna gain mass (Muuscle weighs more than fat). But im sure many people have different ideas on weight lifting

Im answering the question. "How often you lift weights?" Is that wrong? Or are you crying for no apparent reason?

I've been using a weighted-ab/chest machine and some other light-weight machine type stuff. I've been doing sets of db presses during the week, some db shrugs, maybe a few other things.. I haven't benched a whole bar in a while and, eh, don't plan to.

wat exercises do you recommend for explosivness?

I'm pretty sure you gain explosiveness through lifting weights by pushing the weight in an explosive manner, so with bench press, you push the weight up as fast and explosive as possible.

Pylometric exercises like clap pushups will also develop explosiveness.
