View Full Version : Do boxers really get Physiques like this just from training to box?
Zach53088 08-29-2007, 07:53 PM Is this true come on now how do they look like that without useing weight lifting? My trainer said he does not have any of his guys train with weights and they are all in tip top shape. Is the kind of muscel I wil develop from boxing different then what you get in weight lifting or something? Will I gain strenth and muscle boxinglike my trainer. Look at this guy. I can get like this boxing? Do these guys actuwally get like this fro just their training?
I thouht you can only look like that if you lift weights.

mickeyb 08-29-2007, 07:57 PM yeah its extremly plausible.
Maybe do some light weights, many reps.
Most people boxing train with hundreds of sits ups, crunches, press ups etc... you'll get that 6 pack. You'll get the rest of the outstanding muscles by eliminating body fat.
It'll just happen.
Ask Da1catas tho.. he's pretty body focussed.
SpeedKillz 08-29-2007, 08:19 PM well they do alot of pushups and pullups and bodyweight squats, handstand pushups, etc. and that is still resistance. jus cuz weights arent involved, doesnt mean they arent adding resistance to their workouts. but yea that is the kind of body u get from hours and hours and hours of training and eatin right. i myself used to think weights were the devil for boxing, but that was before i understood fully sets and reps and hypertrophy and all that good stuff about weight lifting. theres alot of info on weight lifting without getting big and bulky and slow, so do some research...
ForemanCrossArm 08-29-2007, 08:21 PM hitting the heavy bag will do wonders for your physique, i know mine has changed in the few weeks ive been working the bag..
BrooklynBomber 08-29-2007, 08:22 PM yeah its extremly plausible.

That's wrong if you wanna build up any sort of muscle.
Light weight/many reps combo is nothing but a myth.
If you wanna build up you got to work with a good weight and do the hyperthaphy zone amount of reps(6-12) and whats more important, have the right diet.
And don't worry about getting sluggish, if you do right stretching and your weight lifting program is correctly incorporated into the boxing program you would be fine.
Zach53088 08-29-2007, 08:25 PM If I lift weights I gota eat six times a day every three hours it sucsk with protein shakes and all and im already 180 pounds
BrooklynBomber 08-29-2007, 08:26 PM If I lift weights I gota eat six times a day every three hours it sucsk with protein shakes and all and im already 180 pounds
IF you are gonna have a right diet you will be fine,
Go to www.t-nation.com they have a lot of good reading on this subject
Zach53088 08-29-2007, 08:38 PM well check this out this is my diet that ive been on
http://www.geocities.com/zacharysr71/Food.html
I already have been weight lifting for 4 moths now still dont have the body i want i usta be an endurance atlete thats why i wanted to stop weight lfting but now ppl are saying if i want taht msucle i gotta eat how im eating and lift every day do ireally haft to eat like that come on now man cant is just eat like this look here
Fruits
Chicken
Turkey
Fish
Vegetables
Water
That is pretty much what my new diet menu would consists of....no beverages EXCEPT water. Eat your fruits in the morning preferably not in the evening at all due to the sugar content. Go with LEAN cut meats no red meat either just white (turkey/chicken/fish).
Gorge on vegetables...In my lunches, Ill have a salad however I will pack together a green pepper and some baby carrots as a snack.
Just keep it clean, no processed foods...If it is in a bag throw it out...Make it all NATURAL. White meats/vegetables/fruits...And PLENTY of water...Drink about 8 servings of water a day (about 16.9oz to 20oz)
I also incorporate whey protein in my diet....NO MILK!
That is really about it, A lot of people have their own ways of eating, some will say eat potatos and bread. However I cannot it makes me slow and sluggish....so does oatmeal and brown rice sweet potato good though
PunchDrunk 08-29-2007, 08:46 PM LOL, "if it is in a bag throw it out" - Do you pick your whey protein from a tree in the back yard?
"NO MILK!" - Do you realize where whey protein comes from?
Other than those two glaring inconsistencies, your advice is pretty sound. :)

i'm no nutrition expert, but it seems like ur fat ratio compared to ur carbs and protein is REALLY low. i dono if ur tryin to be a boxer or jus a weight lifter, but if u wanna train for real like a fighter does, up the carbs and up the fats a little, and u dont need near 300g of protein a day, thats ridiculous, ur eating twice as much protein as u have to. 1g per pound will be more than enough...unless ur tryin to bulk up...
VERSATILE2K9 08-29-2007, 09:06 PM Ive always been a bulky muscular, but when working out in boxing.(cardio)I define my muscles more.

Ok so I can eat three meals a day?
SpeedKillz 08-29-2007, 09:20 PM Ok so I can eat three meals a day?
if that works for u then sure. again, u still havent stated ur exact goals yet. like i personally eat 6 times a day cuz i train to fight, so i need the constant energy and nutrients, if ur tryin to jus lift weights, or do other sports, ur dietary needs may be different. diet is also alot of experimentation.
anyway, wut r ur goals bro?
Zach53088 08-29-2007, 09:28 PM Well I want to be in shape and be able to fight like the rest of the kids in the boxing gym and have fit bodies like they do i want to be in very good atleteic condition just like the rest of em
ForemanCrossArm 08-29-2007, 10:15 PM you gotta' work at it to get there. Joe Frazier thought the same thing when he rolled into a PAL gym at 220 for the first time.. and a fat-ass 220.
Zach53088 08-29-2007, 10:58 PM Well shit im like 180 and bioelectrical impedence says 16 percent sometimes.
hemichromis 08-30-2007, 01:59 AM why on earth to people believe the only way to get bigger muscles is to do exercises specifically focused toward that goal!
muscles increase in size in response to any adverse stimulous they are exposed to whether this be weight training or not. it is a survival reaction your body doesnt care how it looks! if a man did nothing but his the heavybag hard he would still gain alot of muscle.

Well thats good to hear man
Zach53088 08-30-2007, 10:47 AM nowadays theres so much advice for people to give that contridicts what the last person told you no wonder why its so easy to get lost in this confusion for some people
Darkstar 08-30-2007, 11:16 AM nowadays theres so much advice for people to give that contridicts what the last person told you no wonder why its so easy to get lost in this confusion for some people
Thats true. Just keep working, if it doesnt work do some research and keep improving.
Zach53088 08-30-2007, 03:54 PM Well I know one thing is true the eating six mini meals a day thing does not work for me yeah it made me gain alot of muscel weight lifting but now I got a little gut I wanna get rid of and I weigh too much 180 so now ima eat how I usta what worked best for me was not to drink any milk or eat any bread and stay away from all starches like rice and oartmeal sweet potatao was ok but the rice and oatmeal made me feel like shit stay away form anything that comes processed in a bag or is man made choose all lean white meats chciken turkey breast fish and eat shit lods of nutritious vegetables now thats how to do it yeah.Fruits too gotta ove em.
mightymouse2k 08-30-2007, 05:18 PM In my opinion, that physique in page 1 of this thread is attainable, you just need to train hard. Remember do lots and lots of "core" work i.e. pull ups, press ups, dips etc and "functional weight training, talk to your trainer about them. Also please remember a good physique is more a byproduct of boxing training, looking good is not as important as winning fights.... you do boxing with the aim of knocking people out.
DA1CATAS 08-30-2007, 06:39 PM Run like a four legged animal.....
I mean damn.. why don't boxers run anymore... It does so much for you. Its starting to piss me off.. It answers so many of everyones questions.
When I have.............
Weight problems? - I Run alot
Stamina issues? - I Run alot
Wanna get cut after time off from the gym? - I Run alot
Definition in parts of my body that i cant seem to get it in? - I Run alot.
Wanted to try out that dancing style of ali but didn't have the stamina/endurance to do it? - I Ran alot.
and worked on jab which was KEY for that last one.
look just try it for a week.. not even a month.. you'll feel great.
I won't tell you to follow my eating habits but Running is something everyone can do. and get prettty much the same result.
EMPOROAR 08-30-2007, 07:06 PM Yeah just because you could run a marathon does not mean you are in fighting shape.
Other then that good post.
British Pitbull 08-30-2007, 07:18 PM The first 2 years of boxing I never touched weights and my arms and stomach got toned and pumped like never b4 and that was just from running, bagwork, skipping, groundwork and general stuff you do in the boxing gym, IV started 2 take up weights now for extra power if anything but I don't go to hard on them.

You're absolutely right. Running builds an insane amount of stamina, as well as skill, and it's also a great way to release stress and adrenaline. Also, a great way to lose a cell phone (which happened today haha).
But seriously, if you start running three miles a day, six times a week you will not only gain stamina, but a serious lean body. Do that for a month with a diet of nothing but protein, chicken, fish, salads, and your body will dig it. You don't have to stick to a strict as steel insane diet, just eliminate some junk and get some serious excercise and you'll start getting the results you want.

Smartest response to one Of my posts I've ever seen.

Why?? Because he agreed with you???
YellowAndBlack 08-30-2007, 11:03 PM It's just what works. I don't understand why people don't go "back to basics" when it comes to tried and true efforts.
Zach53088 08-30-2007, 11:21 PM Yeah I am so damn sore from all this boxing I get up in teh middle of the night to take a piss and you know how you lift your head up to sit up and get out of bed well when I do that at night im like AHHHH! Cause all mus muscles hurt thats hwo I know its working but I think I have been doing too much too fast cause now im so sore it hurts like bad pain. It sucks.

Zach53088 08-31-2007, 12:18 AM  Yeah this thread is geting populaur topic now huh.
Zach53088 08-31-2007, 12:19 AM So I should run my ass off ok will do just that. I have a tendancy to overtrain though cause the endorphines I get in my brain from doing all this exercise soemtimes gets to me.
Peterp 08-31-2007, 07:29 AM i went through a bodybuilding phase many years ago. I can tell you my physique has improved heaps more from boxing and boxing training than bodybuilding weight training.
My lat spread is now so impressive, i could never get such good back development from weights alone.
DA1CATAS 08-31-2007, 11:59 PM Why?? Because he agreed with you???
Naa because he actually added the foods that would be ideal to group with running if you wanted results and didnt have the physical make up i do to eat milkshakes, pies, and whateva and still look the way i do...
Naaa not really.. its because he agreed with me.
ANYWAY... Today i knocked this ***** out cold in 45 ****in seconds... it was poor blisss... he didnt wake up for like 8 seconds...
Left hook Right hook left uppercut straight right...
He was already gone on the right hook... I seriously just wish I could have recorded it... because im sure some nigas gonna say "bullshit Catas anyone could just say they knocked someone out"
And that statement would be absolutely right... but i dont care I just wanted to tell it...

DONT FORGET TO USE THE JAB
jab is the most important punch and you could KO person better by using the jab. as a title belt dont underestimate you oppenet use the jab to study him , make him off balance and making opening. also score with it.
is it an amataur bout?
ForemanCrossArm 09-01-2007, 04:03 PM In Joe Frazier's book (Smokin' Joe) he never once mentions weight-lifting as a means of his training, and he only slightly semi-alludes (that's all, seriously) to it being a semi-serious factor in his own gym after he hung up the gloves and started working with Marvis (and others).
road work, sparring, heavybag, etc. that was it.

Thats what I do.**** all the other unnecessary shit. All it will do to me is over train you and make you very exhausted.
ForemanCrossArm 09-01-2007, 04:18 PM exactly. perfect what you'll need, Frazier spent much of his time with Yank (during the beginning) with him just holding up a medicine ball and Joe perfecting the arc and aim of his left-hook. He won basically all of his fights with just that one punch.

I honestly was more pissed at the fact that we couldn't work.
I wanted to try south paw (because I suck at it) and sidestepping instead of dodging a few times...
But this ***get kept trying to hurt me.. I mean it is boxing but he hooked right into my neck/ear hard as hell and pissed me off... because the shot shouldn't have been that hard..
Next thing I know he was on the floor... then pissed and wouldn't leave the ring saying "I wanna fight again right now... i dont need to recover"
That was after he woke up mind you.
To get a K.O. that cold I felt real  infront of all those people.:grouphug:

Frazier was naturally big anyway. He wouldnt need to weight lift.
Some people are like that. I am. I only need to look at a weight and i put muscle on.
Zach53088 09-02-2007, 02:07 PM Is ir just me or has my thread been highjacked the whole purpose of this was to get my questions answerd. Seems like everyone is talking about there fights and how joe frasier is big.
