themonk 08-24-2007, 07:14 PM many people have certain problems they need to overcome to advance in their pursuit of boxing, some dont like getting hit in sparring and need to get used to it, some have bad hand-eye coordination and need to improve it, some are fat and out of shape when they first start training. I am the same.
although ive been working out for afew years, up until 6 months ago i used to abuse pretty much every drug at the weekends, and although i know how stupid that was now, you cant change the past. the thing is there is one demon still from those days that i cant shake, and although I train as hard as anybody I know, I relent in the pain of training, and am dedicated in every way when it comes to boxing, I just cant stop getting stoned.
even though i push myself so hard, my muscles get tighter and tighter, i drop fat at will, and my technique is always increasing, my heart-lung fitness pretty much stays exactly the same. because no matter how hard i push myslef when i run, or skip, or spar - i always go back to smoking weed on the weekend.
its ridiculous iknow, and everybody at my gym just shakes their head when i tell them, but im seriously addicted psycholgically to weed. I thought i could handle it on my own but i cant, so ANY advice you guys can offer me is greatly appreciated, even if you glance this post and think youve got nothing to contribute just say whatevers on your mind, because i need to ****ing kick this shit as soon as pos. thanks
mickeyb 08-24-2007, 07:20 PM Dont buy it.
ForemanCrossArm 08-24-2007, 07:23 PM its not bad for your lungs.. its proven that it regenerates the cells it blots in the lungs (the exact opposite of tobacco). it probably helps your pain tolerence too..
cerealkiller135 08-24-2007, 07:29 PM Marijuana is really not a big deal, unless getting stoned is taking over your life. I used to smoke everyday and just quit one day so I would eat healthier.
SpeedKillz 08-24-2007, 07:32 PM i smoke weed like once every 2 or 3 weeks or so and it does nothing to affect my athleticism. i certainly am not condoning it in anyway shape or form, but it aint the end of the world if u smoke on the weekends. jus dont let it affect ur training and ur diet.
GrizzleBoy 08-24-2007, 09:42 PM Please read all of this if youre passionate about giving up.
The VERY FIRST THING you need to do is tell yourself RIGHT NOW that youre going to end it RIGHT NOW.
Dont bother with trying to come off of it slowly, or smoking less, or smoking mersh or anything less potent to substitute, because all youre doing is telling yourself that you still need it. That is in no way the right frame of mind to be in. You dont want it. It's not something that you need, it's the thing thats (in your own words) GETTING IN YOUR WAY! **** that shit.
If you want to stop then remember above all things, that all smoking is, is just a HABIT.
When you feel like smoking, its because thats what youre used to doing at that certain time.
When you feel the craving get up and do something that will require your concentration e.g. playing games on the hardest difficulties, learning something, practice your boxing technique etc.
Anything you enjoy doing that includes a lot of thought and will engage your mind could be a short way of saying that i suppose.
-Try to distance yourself as much as you can from things/people that you associate with weed or smoking weed. This is one of, maybe THE most important thing you can do.
If youre around people who smoke it, or are around things that make you want to smoke, it will make it a million times harder. Watching someone do something youre not allowed to do but want to do is never easy.
If your situation is difficult e.g your best friends are into it and you think theyll be pissed at you for not hangin with them as much. Just remember its not about them its about you and what you want. If they were friends they would acknowledge that.
-Think of it as a BIG decision youre making every time the thought of smoking comes into your head. Do you care enough about your boxing/health and being able to improve to your full potential to sacrifice getting lean?
Do you want to fully benefit from the hard training you put in as often as you do, without the thought lingering in your head that theres something holding you back from where you need to be? If so, then you know what you have to do!
-Think about the MONEY MAYNGG THE MONEY!!!! A month of not lightin' it up will save you more than you think (depending on how much and how often you smoke, but hey, money is money).
I dont know what else to say off the top of my head at the moment, but from my experience those are things you can do and think about to get you where you want to be.
Just remember it all starts with you and your mindset. If you start off with a weak mindset that is how you will carry on (Start as you intend to carry on as they say). Use your passion for boxing as a fuel to keep stepping in the right direction and the knowledge of what is keeping you from your full potential to stop you taking a step backwards.
I tried to say everything i know so hopefully at least one of those points will be valid to you even if others arent.
Hope I helped man good luck.
-Antonio- 08-24-2007, 10:15 PM Just stop. You aren't addicted, you just need to get past that, "man this would be so much better if I were stoned phase." After a couple of weeks you wont even be thinking about it.
crack is the answer will make you loose weight, you won't have to wear any mouth piece cuz you'll loose all your teeth, perfect for a boxer
msagrain 08-25-2007, 08:40 AM i dont smoke it even tho its in my sig :)
boxing4ever 08-25-2007, 03:54 PM here is my story ive been boxing for about 10 months im 16 years old. I smoked about 4 times since ive been in high school. A couple months back I smoked a blunt with some of my boys and the next day I went out for a run and jesus christ was it ****ed up! It ****ed my breathing up for about a week or two. I dont care if other people say its harmless and wont do nothing! It messed with my performance and as long as im training I will not EVER smoke a damn thing again.
msagrain 08-25-2007, 06:16 PM apparently mike tyson smoke weed
deuce_drop 08-25-2007, 06:41 PM dude i burn every time before i do any training and i burn afterwards. it's all a personal decision on whether or not you want to smoke, if you feel bad about smoking then don't do it, if you don't then do what makes you feel good and makes you happy.
if you're competing i would advise against smoking herbs for a few reasons, 1) it is illegal and any commission or organization isnt going to allow it. 2) you should be more focused on the task at hand then burning. 3) if you get used to training and preparing for a fight and you have a routine of smoking then when you don't it will feel weird and uncomfortable.
all in all it depends on you and your situation and as far as being psychologically addicted to herbs that is the craziest thing i've ever heard because it's not an addicting drug, what it is though it is a habitual drug. just like someone said once you get past the " this would be good if i was stoned phase " you'll be ok, because it's something you do out of habit rather being psychologically addicted. that psych shit is for hard drugs like speed and heroin and crack and what ever else is out there that ****s you up and ruins your life, cigarettes are psych drugs as well as habitual, double whammy.
but back the the matter at hand, although i don't compete, i train 4-6 times a week, i run 3 miles at a minimum 3 days a week, i do sprints during my running exercises, i do endless calisthenics 5 days a week, i shadow box and hit the heavybag everyday, i train a amateur fighter and i also teach real life self defense and i burn herbs all the while.
i'm not saying that it is for everyone because it's not, but it all depends on who you are and how it works for you or how it doesn't work for you. there are a few questions you need to ask yourself in order to really find your answer. who are you? and where do you want to go with all this? what are your goals? and how are you going to achieve them? what is your plan to achieve your goals? and is there anyone or thing that would be involved with your personal life to where by smoking would impact it negatively?
i've had to stop smoking before a few times and you know what? herbs never went anywhere, they were still there when i came back to burning, and you know what over time they keep getting better.
it will always be there.........
p.s. someone on this thread said start drinking, that is the worst thing you could do, especially for you stamina and for you weight, not to mention other health problems. drinking does WAY MORE HARM then any good.............
What you need is a healthy substitute, something to take your mind off of it completely, but not in a sense that it is a trade-off with another harmful substance; alcohol, tobacco, etc. Everytime you have the craving to smoke marijuana, go for a run. Running will put you in shape well, and an extra run will not hurt you. Many athletes talk of the "runners high" that takes you to a point of a different mental and physical feeling. So if it's the feeling you crave, or just the habit, a safe substitute can help you out.
themonk 08-26-2007, 03:03 PM thanks guys thats helped alot. deucedrop weed isnt physically addictive asin there arent any chemicals that your brain becomes dependant on, but after years of smoking, and picking up a joint whenever a problem comes my I feel asif I need it, even though i know i dont. I have actually managed to give up before but my main problem now was something grizzleboy mentioned about having friends that smoke. all my friends do drugs just to pass the time, so when I go back to college in september ill get new friends who do normal shit in their spare time, until then ill just have to try and say no.
I reckon smoking must affect peoples lungs in different ways, because ive got a friend who smokes tabacco constantly and manages to keep up in training (most the time), but like boxing4ever ill just have afew tokes on a spliff an try an run the next day an get nowhere
They are places you can go to seek treatment. I strongly recommend going to one if you can't stop on your own. I disagree with everyone one here that it is easy to kick on your own. If you are truly addicted you need to seek professional help. There is nothing wrong with that and **** whatever negative shit people may say otherwise. Boxing can become a healthy replacement. I'm saying this from my personal experience.
David06 08-27-2007, 04:50 PM If you're really worried about your lungs, use a vaporizer.
infestacide 08-27-2007, 09:06 PM lol weed isnt even an addictive substance.
EMPOROAR 08-27-2007, 09:08 PM I have been involved in sports for years and let me tell you...if you are a chronic weed smoker it is a bad thing. Toking 3-4 times a month really isn't a big deal. Same thing with cocaine. You can still play sports at a high level even if you are coked out 5 days in the week. It does not matter once you reach a certain level.
P4P50 08-28-2007, 02:39 AM its all in your head weed doesnt get you PHYSICALLY addicted no matter how much you use it.......and plus the only unhealthy thing about doing it is you eat junk food after......just stick to healthy foood.....as for the other drugs...just quit....easy as that..
