By 1902 the Admiralty in Britain was sure that the Germans had the eventual intention of a naval war with Britain. Even though the German Emperor stated that he considered Britain a friend he would not give up his fleet just to have a better relationship with Britain.

I have no desire for a good relationship with England at the price of the development of Germany’s Navy. If England will hold out her hand in friendship only on the condition that we limit our Navy, it is a boundless impertinence and a gross insult to the German people…The [Navy] Law will be carried out to the last detail; whether the British like it or not does not matter! If they want war, they can begin it, we do not fear it!

Concerns that Germany would try to expand its coastline grew with the realizations that despite having a vast empire Germany’s coast was mostly blocked by sands and islands. “The next thing is, what is her coastline? It’s a very queer one, as you know, split clean in two with Denmark”. It seemed as thought Germany would have no choice in a time of war but to invade the countries neighbouring to secure valuable coastline and ports. Theories of a possible “Franco-Russo-German coalition” against Britain swarmed after the novel The Coming Conquest of England was translated from German to English in 1903. This book, along with The Riddle of the Sands, which was published in that same year, opened the minds of many to the possible threat of a German invasion of the British mainland. It was a threat that was not taken lightly.

There was a lot of distrust between Germany and Britain in the last decades of the 1800’s and the first of the 1900’s. Germany was a rapidly growing imperial power, which threatened to challenge the mighty British Empire, not only in economics and trade, but in military might. Erskine Childers’ novel The Riddle of the Sands is centralized around this British distrust of Germany and a German plot for the possible invasion of the British coast. This essay will show that, although the invasion in the novel was fictional, Germany did pose a serious threat to Britain and it impacted government and civilians alike. There was some concern in Britain of a possible invasion and the great naval race between the two nations only fuelled the distrust between the two peoples. Childers’ novel is set somewhere in the period of the 1890-1900 when competition between Germany and Britain was very high in all aspects of society. “In all parts of the earth, in every pursuit, in commerce, in manufacturing, in exploiting the other races, the English and Germans jostle each other.” It was because of this that tensions arose and the background for the novel was created.

Germany was a young nation compared to Britain. It had united out of a collection of small states into a large empire under the leadership of Otto von Bismarck and the strength of his armies. One of Childers’ characters in the novel described Germany as “an empire growing like wildfire”. After defeating the Austrians and the French, Germany had asserted itself as one of the dominant powers in Europe. “They’ve licked the French, and the Austrians, and are the greatest military power in Europe”. This was cause for concern in Britain, as “the probable foe was no longer France, but the more powerful and invidious German Empire”. It was feared that the only thing that stood between Britain and Germany was the Royal Navy and with the passing of the Navy Laws in Germany in 1898 and 1900 it seemed as though Germany would attempt to challenge for control of the seas. “The command of the seas is the thing nowadays, isn’t it?”. With the German shipbuilding program in action British suspicions grew, as “there could be no doubt against whom such a fleet was aimed”. The Navy Laws and the challenge of British naval superiority only widened the gap of distrust that Britain felt toward Germany. Power and war was the driving factor behind the creating of nations like Italy and Germany and was seen as desirable in the age of imperialism, “War represents motion and life, whereas a too prolonged peace heralds in stagnation, decay and death”.

Germany also had very few colonies because it had been left out of the overseas territorial expansions with its late development as a nation. It did however have a very strong export market because of its economic power and a powerful navy would be necessary to protect such an important part of the empire. Germany would rival Britain on the international stage with a “world policy” and according to Germans, a “strong Navy is the essential condition of world policy” It was predicted that by 1906 Germany would have the second most powerful navy in the world. British officials were concerned with the rapid expansion of the German fleet under Emperor Wilhelm II. “[W]hat I’m concerned with is their sea power. It’s a new thing with them, but it’s going strong, and that Emperor of there is running it for all it’s worth.” Britain, as an island nation, relied on its naval power more than any other European nation and that therefore followed the two-power standard, which meant that Britain’s navy would be more powerful than any other two combined. Britain then responded to the German shipbuilding by increasing the size of their own fleet and also reorganizing it to better protect Britain but without alarming Germany to a concentration of British forces. Britain knew Germany was challenging their naval superiority but how serious the German threat was remained unknown. This lead to a lot of speculation by the characters in Childers’ novel as they tried to guess what the German plans might be. All that was known was for certain was that the Germans were building and it was being done “silently, rapidly, and systematically”.

The possibility of a German invasion of Britain was considered a real possibility in Britain for a period of time. The Germans were expanding rapidly in terms of trade, industry and military forces. It was seen that if anyone could pull off an invasion it would be Germany. “Wild? In a way. So is any invasion. But it’s thorough; it’s German. No other country could do it”. People in Britain began to become severely concerned as stories of invasion became more popular. Germans also felt threatened by Britain and in Christmas 1904 Germany recalled war ships to home waters fearing a British attack because of a perceived threat from a British build-up in their waters. Emotions were high in both nations and the people of each society were filled with spirit and the cause of their homeland. German opinions that they could invade Britain successfully were not uncommon, “together with France and Russia...we would take London”. British opinions also were resolved, “were war declared against German, the Royal Navy would get its blow in first, before the other side had time even to read in the papers that war had been declared”. With the German shipbuilding program putting out vast numbers of vessels some began to believe that Germany was strong enough to take on Britain single-handed and without the need to French or Russian assistance. “If the German Fleet ever becomes superior to ours, the German Army can conquer this country”.

With the possibilities of invasion turning from speculation to a more mass phobia the British government set up a committee to determine if an invasion of the British coast was realistic. It was hypothesized that “Germany possessed the capability of dispatching 190,000 soldiers to British port cities within a span of 36 hours”. At the conclusion of the hearings in front of the committee it was determined that “a complete naval surprise on the part of Germany simply could not be supported”. Such a build-up would have to be done in secret and it was impossible to keep a secret that large given the number of spies and other reconnaissance tools available to the British government, “agents and spies in the ports could not be blinded”. Even if it were possible to keep the plans secret the British fleet would still have to be destroyed before it could do major damage to the invasion force. The destruction of the Royal Navy was highly unlikely as even the German Admiral Tirpitz stated that the Royal Navy had four times the strength of the German fleet. Spying was a major tool used by governments and is a key component to Childers’ novel as two friends become involved in “spying on a spy” to try to uncover German naval plans.

The committee did determine however, that a powerful German naval force could “disrupt the control of the Royal Navy in the North Sea”. This could have posed serious problems of its own for Britain. “Say we’re beaten on the high seas by a coalition. There’s then a risk or starvation or invasion”. The Royal Navy was also seen as the police force of the seas and if it were to be destroyed “the best security for the world’s peace and advancement would be gone.” Protection of shipping lanes was vital to Britain as most of their resources were coming from other nations and overseas colonies. Many other these fears were a result of Britain lacking a good fighting vessel. As a result of its imperial role Britain had developed many classes of ships and because Britain had almost total dominance of the seas very little thought went into the best type of ship with which to protect the empire. In 1906 the first Dreadnought was created which solved many of the problems with the British fleet however, it soon spread to other nations and Germany was quick to begin building their own Dreadnoughts. This caused alarm among some in Britain because rebuilding their navy around a new type of ship would allow the Germans to do the same and almost instantaneously catch-up to the British in naval technology. The outcome of a naval engagement between the two powers was still in doubt but the feeling in Britain was that no matter what happened to their fleet the British people would not give up. “It’s all rot what they talk about instant surrender. We can live on half-rations, recuperate, and build”.

As the British increased the number of ships under construction there became more unanimous consent that, in the event of battle, the Royal Navy would defeat the German fleet. This turned more attention onto how Britain would fight a war with Germany. “Or, suppose we get the best of it on the high seas, and we have to attack or blockade a coast like this, which is sand from end to end”. Plans were made on the most effective way to cut off German supplies. Britain would use its navy to cut off shipping and overseas trade in hopes of putting pressure on German industry. Blockades of German harbours to prevent ships from leaving as well as patrols in the North Sea to cut off ships from foreign ports were considered. Childers expressed concern of the makeup of the German coast and the lack of experience in the Royal Navy of fighting in such an environment.

You can’t improvise people who are at home in such waters. The navy chaps don’t learn it, though, by Jove! they’re the most magnificent service in the world-in pluck, and nerve, and everything else. They’ll try anything, and often do the impossible. But their boats are deep, and they get little practice in this sort of thing.

This concern over the German coast was not shared among many in Britain and a blockade was considered a “simple matter” by officials in the Royal Navy. Little consideration was given to all the channels and estuaries along the German coast like there was in Childers’ novel. His characters carefully consider how small vessels such as torpedo boats and patrol boats could manoeuvre in the channels and raid German ports and disrupt shipping. They also discuss how the Germans could use the channels to launch raids of their own and since no one is Britain had charted the channels they would be at a disadvantage.

To be totally honest, I'm not too into hockey. I don't know the rules or anything. I've just recently started to get into it. Brandon is from Detroit, so that's his team. That's why I'm excited about watching the game with him. I've never watched an entire hockey game before.

How can you not know the rules of hockey. It's pretty simple. And don't give me that you been playing the game since you were 6 crap. I learned that young.
