Had a fight lastnight, wasn't as technical as I would have like to be, I have no excuses though (had a bad rib but it didn't bother me at all)...I was just basically thrown off by his height he was 6' 4" 164 and I am 5'8" 155.

I should have concentrated on his body alot more than his head, and worked my way in. In any even here they are... giving up 8" in height is not fun LOL.

I mean so did ya WIN?

You would have done a whole lot better if you would have jabbed more. It would have been loads easier for you because he wasn't using his Jab at all to me.

After you fed him a right hand he didnt want anymore to eat. So he wasn't gonna charge you like he did in the beggining ya should have taken advantage of that. Ya must have cracked him good with that right hand that I saw.

Overall I liked it... thanx for postin.

cool cool i like that hard ass overhand right you threw in the second round when it was like 30 seconds into the round. what state do you live in? ive never seen a amateur boxing video like this before where the ref looked like a random dude from a fitness gym with a tank top on and fighters with normal headgear and cups ontop of thier shorts

The first round was even...but its bigger than 100 megs so it wont let me upload maybe ill get to it later. It was a Smoker thats why the ref, crowd, ect ect. I think I'll have my first AM fight in Oct. I am in Northern California.

As far as jabbing, yup your right...and I felt I needed to go more to the body more..but we live and learn. My trainer said I should get in there with him so I am ready for whatever, if I really want to do the golden gloves next spring, hopefully 152lbs wont have too many 6'4" dudes jajaja.

Thanks fellas, I guess I did better than I thought I did, it was a bit fustrating not doing the things ya wann do...but thats why we hit the gym 247 :boxing:

And the tall guy was obviously a novice.

You telegraphed your shots by throwing your hands up before throwing. If the guy was more experienced he would of countered that all day. You should have went to his body and threw the straight right cause he was constantly open for it. I saw in the beginning of the 2nd,you throwing it and turning his neck.So obviously you have power. To further increase this power you should bend your knees more. Your front leg was straight up,you dont have enough balance or foot planting shots like that.

And of course jab your way in instead of depending just on explosiveness. It was nice explosiveness, but throw the jab first then explode. Ive always heard and it seems true. That who ever establishes there jab first will control the tempo of the fight. And try to keep composure and not throw so many wild shots.

I was trying to get him to flinch or put his hands up so I could land a clean shot to the body. I should have followed the right hands to the body with a left hook upstairs (like on the bag) but just didn't do it.

I get all your saying versy, its just a matter of executing in there..I could have used your inside hooks to the body, that was the plan but yea just kinda got wild when I was getting fustrated.

Thanks for the feed back..thats why i posted it :)

If Im not mistaken, smokers arnt recorded, its an unofficial bout.

That is exactly correct. We have them a few times a year at my gym, sometimes with other gyms b/c there aren't many boxers around here. Think of it as sparring sessions or exhibition bouts that are open for the public to come watch. At our gym, the proceeds go to charity -- my gym is a 501(c) charity, BTW -- so the local officials let it slide. Boxing is so rare here that if it wasn't for smokers we'd have to travel to another state for every fight.

EDIT: I also want to add that our smokers are just about the only times that sparring turns into a good, bloody, all-out war.

Head movement would've done you well as well. There's no good competition over here in VA. The boxing scene aint all that big.

Yeah thanks for posting that, good work man.

But I have to ask you, were you two told by the trainers to take it easy on eachother? Or were you a bit intimidated by each other?

Because I can understand that, it just looked like both of you were scared of taking shots when you're wearing pads, head gear, and huge gloves.

If you've never been hit I can understand that.

I was wondering the same thing about telegraphing... you said exactly what I could not find the words for...

A smoker is like a practice exhibition. Its meant to be takin serious, but when your nerves get to you.It could look fake. very hesitatant on what to do.Especially when you have a crowd.

i see a lot of amatuers who start off have the same posture as you. you didn't have a guard and kept coming straight for him. exciting stuff sometimes, but a good boxer would have owned you. nice fight :)

I honestly was a bit thrown off by the height difference, I didn't feel my jab was landing at all, and I had to resort to right hand leads. It was my 3rd smoker. I ended up with my left eye nicked a bit it still a bit blue/yellow...even with all the gear on you still can feel a shot that lands flush, some cats have more power than others though. Thanks for the input..and cool avatar ShoGun is the man..when is pride comming back?

I know what your saying, and I am still work in progress, I think its hard to look technical against someone so tall, my guard is better than that but with the crowd and not being able to really land my jab I at times I had to take the risk. I do better with cats my own size..but you gotta be ready for anything..and this is the best way to learn..

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that you did a really good job, even if you don't have a lot of experience.

5.8 vs 6.4 is really complicated, and you did not look that bad.

You need to get lower. You're already short, so get lower. Make him have to reach even further, extending his arms. Gives you more of a chance to counter, and takes away power from his shots. He, like most fighters, hates being against the ropes, as I saw in the second link. So, pin him against the ropes.. If you have to, keep a forearm up to block shots, and attack the body. If you have to take a shot or two to get on the inside, don't worry about it. You'll be lower, so his shots'll have less affect anyway.

As far as countering.. He loves to double up his left jab, and then hit you with punch three, which is a (kinda) straight right hand. What you need to do is time it. Step back once he throws the jab, Back up a step and when he's on his third punch, (the right) duck under and attack the body. If you can, come up top with another shot. All I could see from those two videos.

Nice post, hes not a regular so I don't know if ill be in there with him again, but theres this other guy thats is pretty tall but hes a lefty who I may end up sparring with. I'll remember to keep even lower. Thanks for the advice.
