HI Guys,

Need help with my reflexes.

I am 31 and started boxing this year, I love the sparring sessions I do, and I am working up to competing in some in house White collar events the club has.

My problem is my reflexes are slow and letting me down. I know allot of the guy's I spar against are 10 to 13 years younger than me, and I am not looking to turn back the clock. I just want to pick the quickness up to give myself more of a chance.
Anyone have any tips or advice to help me get my reflexes happening quicker?

Thanks

Nothing can really speed your reflexs up mate, just keep training and work on your other strengths.
Your timing will improve the more you train this will make a big difference to your ability to land and avoid shots.
Good luck with the boxing mate, have you any scheduled fights coming up??

I'm in the same boat. I'm 39 and sparring against 20 year olds. I am getting ready for a white collar as well but I'm in the MAsters Division which is 35 and over. The young guys are faster. I have yet to find a solution. My trainer likes to say "anyone can get faster." I agree. Even when you're doing mitts and heavy bag, train faster, don't just plod through your workout.

And use your age to your advantage, be calm and wise, and egoless.

do you guys mean reflexes as in reaction time or just hand speed?
Hand speed can be improved, that takes training (on speed bags, double end bags and such). Reflexes/reaction time is something that is harder to improve. It's based on recognition of an event - like an incoming punch - and then the physical response that is needed. Reflexes unfortunately diminish with age. The best thing to do is to be prepared for everything, and get enough experience where recognition and the necessary reactions are immediate.

Thanks for the advice guy's
I was talking about offense and defense reflexes.

I will just keep working on my timing and keep training hard.
I have no matches coming up, but when the coach at the gym thinks i am ready he will put me in a white collar contest the club has once a month.

I am in no rush to get there, But I want to be 100% when I am

no specific exercises u can do to improve ur reflexes. they jus improve with constant sparring obviously ur timing will get much better. u can work specific defense and offense drills with a trainer on the pads do some rehearsed stuff at first so u both know wuts comin and then change it up, thats wut i do and it works pretty good.
