View Full Version : If you're a slugger should you be on your toes alot?
Versastyle 07-23-2007, 07:34 PM I wondered this.I mean it does wonders for movements, but throwing power shots and planting your feet.Is it good to be on your toes for that? Ive been doing floor drills= http://store.titleboxing.com/speedagility-speedladder-sql.html lately at my gym. Seems like I might be a little off balance when throwing shots on my toes. But I get better leverage but less movement when Im flatfooted.

haha. Im short so I cant be a boxer cause my reach sucks and my height.
DA1CATAS 07-23-2007, 07:48 PM You mean a puncher? or a all out slugger?
I see you as a boxer that gets in close and becomes a puncher.
BrooklynBomber 07-23-2007, 07:55 PM What do you mean, a swarming type of puncher like Brewster or a very accurate, waste no shots puncher like Tszyu?
Southpaw Stinger 07-23-2007, 07:57 PM Well for the most part, movement isn't in a sluggers arsenal. Sluggers usually move only one way - forwards!
I see you as a swarmer anyway vers, you'll mostly want to stay inside anyways to neutralise the other guys reach. So upper body movement will be most important to you.

Like Tszyu I guess.

Your last sentence seems accurate. Do what boxers do then when Im close just unleash.

I wanna move foward but give out lateral movements also.
BrooklynBomber 07-23-2007, 08:08 PM Like Tszyu I guess.
Then watch tszyu, he is not on his toes but he is really good at cutting the ring. BUT make no mistake, Tszyu boxed since he was like 6 and has hundreds of AM fights and dozens of am titles. So, it's gonna be hard to move like tszyu.
PunchDrunk 07-23-2007, 08:10 PM If I were you, I'd study Tyson videos nonstop, and work at perfecting his style. That's how you like to fight, and that's what you're good at. You just need to improve all round, especially your footwork and agility (you seem a little sluggish in your movement). Work, work, work. Practice moving (mainly forward), while slipping and unloading until it makes you wanna puke. Then practice it some more. You could be a formidable foe with the right work ethic.

Yeah thats why my trainer makes me do foot drills. And makes me move around the ring alot. He even makes me go to the smaller skinner bag cause it moves alot and I would have to move around it. He also makes me slip after every combo and the last punch I throw to go that way.Or even spin. And more explosiveness when coming in.
Boxing is hard work, alot of it.

My movement is alright. I just wanna be more elusive and not just bob and weave constantly. Kinda throw some of my style in there a little bit.

Wow, Tzyu was fast. Amazingly fast. I never really saw him fight until his bout in the pros with Zab Judah. He had some amazing hand speed.
David06 07-24-2007, 02:57 PM Good lord Tszyu made him look silly.
