Who did they do this?
The country was ravaged by Nuclear attacks. They had lost the war...40 years later, they were one of the top 5 economic nations and one of the largest exporters of goods in the world..
Why is this so...?

Since they have Mechagodzilla they don't need to spend any money on National Defense. Here lies their edge on the rest of the world.

Andrew Brown used to love dressing up. Whether it was in jester's regalia at a village fete or the face-paint of a mime artist, throughout his thirties he relished the freedom of disguise. He did not realise then that change and transformation would be a motif to run through his life. Believing he was born in the wrong body, Andrew made a life-altering decision to discover who he really was and risked sex-change surgery. A course of the female hormone oestrogen ended in the ultimate transformation: man into woman; Andrew into Andrea

It is because they had to completely restructure their economy after the war. The newest technology went into putting their basic infastructure back together and it gave them an advantage over all other nations. They have never looked back. Germany had a similar thing happen to them but couldn't keep the momentum.

True. The whole "employment for life" thing that big companies guaranteed you is on the way out and the job precarity like we have is more the norm. Just one symptom among many of this.
Supposedly they don't like firing long time employees face to face so to get the message across when the fired employee gets to his desk in the morning there is a photocopying machine in what used to be his space.

I guess mine was married...did her over a dumpster behind a pub. Won $50 from a mate who dared me to do it.
She introduced me to her daughter the next day
