View Full Version : De La Hoya Not Ready To Retire
Rick Reeno 10-19-2004, 01:01 AM After suffering the first knock out loss of his career, Oscar De La Hoya is not ready to hang up the gloves. Prior to the Hopkins bout, Oscar told the world that win, lose or draw, this was his last fight. Oscar suprised the Boxing world by taking the fight to Bernard Hopkins. Oscar fought so well that there appeared to be no evidence of a mismatch.
As the fight went on and Hopkins realized he was behind, he began to take the fight to De La Hoya. Hopkins was very accurate in the last few rounds as he began to put the hurt on De La Hoya. Eventually it was one bodyshot to the liver that did Oscar in. When I asked him about how hard this fight was on him, he surprised me with his answer.
"I couldnt believe how easy it was. Everything that I worked on in camp was coming together and I was winning the fight. I know in my heart that I can beat this guy. I tried to get up so bad (from the bodyshot), but I just couldnt do it" said De La Hoya [details (http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=127)]
abdiel2k3 10-19-2004, 01:20 AM great to hear
i dont think he needs to retire just yet
altho i would like to see him back down at 154 of not 147
but i know thats proablably not where he plans to return
THRILLAinmanila 10-19-2004, 03:38 AM Wouldn't retire myself if I knew I could
still earn gazillions on PPV :) :)
jabsRstiff 10-19-2004, 08:03 AM Oscar is just plain lying.
The fight with Hopkins was LOUSY.
It was a glorified sparring session.
Anyone who thinks Oscar was being "effective" has no clue as to what effectiveness is in a boxing match.
Once Hopkins stepped on the gas, Oscar had no reply.
Oh wait, yes he did.....he replied by putting on an acting job that caught Martin Scorcese's attention...after an arm punch bounced off of his side.
You DeLaHoya dickriders are too blind to see this man took his 30million +....& YOUR $70.00, & RAN.
Suckers.
puppy_dogg 10-19-2004, 08:10 AM the rolling around and screaming by dlh did seem a bit dramatic but i dont know why he would throw the fight. he has enough money for 3 lifetimes and he had to realize he was doing ok on the scorecards. i really do wonder if he threw the fight but i like to think he did'nt. even emanuel steward seemed objective to the knockout when watching the replay.
jabsRstiff 10-19-2004, 08:13 AM He didn't "throw" the fight.
He BAILED out of it. Big difference.
Oscar is a calculating guy. He figured he gave the fans enough, & held on longer than expected. He decided to get out before he took a lot of punishment, which was on its way.
I have never seen anyone react that way to a body shot....& I've seen body shots that bent guys in half, & echoed throughout the arena.

ive seen people react like that and worse
the most famous one like it is virgil hill when he got nailed by roy
he fell to his side
grabbed his side
the pain on his face was similar just that oscars face was down
and virgil got up but his face was grimising in pain
jabsRstiff 10-19-2004, 02:07 PM "but he was gettin points effectivly"
No....he wasn't. Hopkins was doing nothing...& not because Oscar was doing anything special.
Hopkins made a mistake by doing so.
Had he went right at Oscar, Oscar would have flopped on the floor even earlier.
Stop kidding yourself. Oscar had NOTHING for Hopkins that night.

u say had he gone 2 oscar
well no fukin **** he woulda killed him

and oscar was busy he was getting points
dont think that i think he woulda beat hopkins if hopkins would have taken it to him
but he DIDNT
and oscar did enough to get points
even hopkins himself aadmitted it
he relozed he was or possibly was behind on the cards
so that when he decided to press the action
but up until then oscar was doin enough to take the fight
borikua 10-19-2004, 02:50 PM Oscar is just a Tito wannabe...
wmute 10-19-2004, 03:20 PM Oscar is just a Tito wannabe...
why would you want to be someone you beat?
jack_the_rippuh 10-19-2004, 05:04 PM Tito got shut down everyone round against Hopkins. Hopkins left no doubt in anyone's mind that he is just on an entire different level than Tito. Tito could have loss the fight in all ways possible.

There are 12 rds. of boxing to be done, buddy.
Oscar *****-punching his way to EDGE out 4 of them....that does not make him "on his way to winning".
LuKahnLi 10-20-2004, 09:29 AM Oscar may not be ready to retire, but I AM ready for him to retire.

but he was winning until a point
Buddy...
QueenCity 10-20-2004, 10:22 PM I really think that De La Hoya VS Trinidad II is just about a sench to happen next year. The fight makes sense for both guys
psychopath 10-21-2004, 08:01 AM Don't hate me for this, I'm a DLH fan . . . but honestly his fight with BH sucks . . . I've been watching the fight over and over again but I always come to the same conclusion . . . he took a dive. Those two succesive left body shots could not have hurt him that bad . . . considering that the punches were partially blocked by DLHs elbows.
Just my honest opinion. ;)
psychopath 10-21-2004, 08:04 AM After his two succesive dismal performance I feel he should retire now and avoid being run over by the younger hungier fighters.
Ivansmamma 10-25-2004, 12:44 PM i agree time to retire for DLH.
