I'm thinking of competing in either boxing or kickboxing smoker when I get back. Would like to know how you prepare for it - from someone who has done it preferrably?

Curly Howard 03-06-2003, 11:32 AM Smoker=Amateur boxing tournament.......... CARDIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kempo Chris 03-06-2003, 01:15 PM agreed with curly Cardio is a key Running and bag rds muy importante The Jake 03-06-2003, 04:36 PM Whats an example of a routine one would follow? - The Jake Curly Howard 03-06-2003, 04:41 PM http://www.globalmma.net/community/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5264 ThaiBoxer™ 03-06-2003, 07:52 PM Hey Jake I did 2 smokers, back in college, both were boxing fights in bars. I later did some amateur Muay Thai and Int'l rules kickboxing. Here's my advice: 1) Punch fast, not hard. When you are up there, your punches will be hard enough. Lots of smokers use really big gloves (20-30 oz) for liability protection, plus they all have headgear. You can still knock him out, but it ain't easy. Lots of punches help. 2) Make sure you punch straight, and don't swing windmills. If you have never fought competitively, this really is harder than it sounds, after the guy has hit you in the face, the crowd is screaming, and you are pissed off. Develop the idea when training on the heavy bag that you will throw crisp, focused punches. 3) Headhunting is the only way to go in these amateur bar fights, plus the crowd loves it. They usually are only 3-4 rounds, of about 1-2 minutes. Not enough time for chopping at the body, unless you are setting up something sneaky. 4) Combinations work. Practice series of 3-4 punch combinations, then USE THESE COMBINATIONS IN YOUR FIGHT!!! They work. Good luck, unless you're fighting me. Then Doom on You. Kempo Chris 03-07-2003, 12:51 AM are u doing boxing or kickboxing and how many rds. will the fight be? The Jake 03-07-2003, 07:49 AM I've yet to decide. My flexibility from all the weights ain't what it used to be but I can still kick to the head pretty ****en easily. But whilst I have no boxing background I think I could be exceptionally good at it. Either would work, I've yet to decide. - The Jake The Jake 03-07-2003, 07:53 AM ThaiBoxer thanks for that. The place that holds the fights, uses regular 5lb gloves IIRC. Strength wise and ability to take a hit, I'm pretty sure I can hold my own. My ability to box/kickbox, OTOH, well, I have no idea! - The Jake seldomTap 03-07-2003, 07:58 AM Good idea Jake, I know I would not be lining up to get one in the chops from you. handjobs4dollars 03-07-2003, 11:19 AM Do some foot work and your combo's. Also keep your hands up. The Jake 03-08-2003, 03:02 AM Originally posted by seldomTap Good idea Jake, I know I would not be lining up to get one in the chops from you. Did I mention I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do? - The Jake Curly Howard 03-08-2003, 09:47 AM You probably already know this but keep your chin tucked and head moving. If you're going to be kickboxing, some blocked kicks score points. You can get points for high kicks even if they are blocked if they are thrown hard. Your TKD background will help but avoid any fancy moves or spinning anything. Kicks to the head score big even if they are blocked. Have someone work on the focus mitts with you and try to get a feel for the counter punch. Amateur fighters in your weight range tend to go for the big right when they get tired or hurt. A lot of amateurs leave the left "there left" side of there body open. You may be able to work on that with quick kicks or punches to get him to drop his left hand. Good Luck submission_guy 03-10-2003, 02:24 AM the guys your up against will be just like tank abott in the early ufc's. they will throw bombs untill they gas., i would just try to stay relaxed for the first round just keeping the judges happy, then just ko them when they are tired, so work the cardio, the havy bag and light sparring if you can find someone. |
