Are we still a major milatry power, i was talking to my mate who still thinks we but i don't i am just annoyed so i am going to have a rant,
The navy has just received massive cuts and as i live in Portsmouth the talk about closing Portsmouth naval base is not welcome. We are down to about 20 frigates and destroyers with more to be sold soon and half of that are in delayed state of readiness about 18 months, and according to my mate thats in the navy there are only 2-3 frigates at some points in the year protect the whole country, our current aircraft carriers don't now have any fighter planes as they were withdrawn last year, the new carriers still might not be built and our new destroyers don't have half the weapons equipment they should.
The army barley has 100,000 men in it, and is massively over stretched, under equipped and half the challenger tanks are in storage the apache helicopters we have had big problems before going into service.
The air force also has had massive cuts and is running completly worn out planes like nimrods.
What do you fellow limeys think could Mongolia really now invade us.

UK is one of a few nations that could do a full scale invasion, personally I don't feel good by saying we have a great military, means we spend buckets loads on it, its a waste of money that could be spent on better things like putting beds in hospitals or stopping every student going to Uni going into 25k of debt. Jesus we just spent 4.5 Billion on 1 nuclear submarine. Who the hell wants war? Don't worry Mongolia won't be invading us anytime soon, we have the Military in Europe.

At the moment I think China Are the Biggest Military power. Not sure. I don't think we that high up, but certainly in the top ten.

i agree that we should not spend a massive amount on defense but according to people that i know in the navy that we are in a real bad position at the moment, its in such a state we couldn’t do a campaign the size of the Falklands anymore, the army could but the navy couldn’t. apparently the MOD wont even give the navy new ink for office printers.
because of the Iraq war about 3-4 billion has been taken out of the defense budget.

Realistically GB are no longer in the top five most powerful military nations but it is becuase we choose not to be.

Lb for Lb we are still one the best trained forces in the World and we still are held in high regard in the military world especially in close quarter combat and precision bombing and strikes.

The US as always are probably top of the list but purely due to manpower against technology and resources. Not due to the individual standard of personnel (against some that is) Obviously the US have pockets of extremely well trained units as well!

You then still have Russia in the mix but their weaponry is outdated and unreliable (outside of the AK47), China have huge numbers of manpower but logistically they are hard to control, Israel have a fantastic combination of battle hardened and well trained troops against a fair size force.
Also do not forget the likes of Germany who have a fairly small force but well trained and well equipped as well as the likes of Iran.

GB has a small force but powerful one, we still have a decent sized force of combat troops.
We have an excellent Navy that includes Nuclear Subs (see link below) and a fantastic Air force.

Also remember that you can be the the most powerful force in the world but that only really counts when you are fighting on a open battlefield, it has shown with the likes of Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq that the big boys cannot bulldoze a country to submission by force alone.

Sometimes it takes excellent intelligence and clever delivery of concentrated force to manage a situation and after 30 years of this sort of warfare in Northern Ireland it shows that GB are as good as anyone else!

Well The UK has NUKES.. so right there the answer is YES.. They are also technologicaly ADAVNCED..

China is just man power thats it, there poorly equipment and spend most of there time oppressing there people. They could be a force if U.S ever paid of there debt to them, its in the Trillions. Personally i've never got off saying "ooo we got a wicked army we pwn u", people send us to wars and have no idea of the consquences, its a waste of money. UK, U.S military is far to offensive minded, they should be there for defensive purposes. One day everyone will keep the nose out of any other countries business, hopefully in my lifetime but I doubt it. Israel is nothing without U.S backing, MOSSAD are trained very well but apart from that there's nothing to be frightened off, they have trouble fighting people with just AK47's. We should bring the troops home and get on with whats important to the people of this country and having a powerful military is not what most people want from their goverment.

It would be nice for every one to stop having wars, but sadly people don’t change and probably never will, that’s why i think we should keep a decent military at all times. In the past we have been caught out and just about got away with it, you have to learn from this.
