Next week I should start training to learn how to box. I really want to lose weight and become more agile. I weigh 252 now and would like to get down to 230 or 225. Should I do that or just focus on maintaining my current weight and change the fat to muscle.

Eat right, train hard, and let your body do what it's going to do. Most of the really good boxers at my gym do not have bodybuilder physiques.

In fact, only one of them does.

Boxing won't necessarily make you look like MR. Olympia. "But it will put you in a shape you could whoop Mr. Olympia's ass. Get in there train hard. When you feel like you can't, or It's too hard. Dig in and go farther. Once you get your body using stored fat. Boxing will melt it off, you will ike how you look and feel.

Give it a good 6 months try hard and I mean real hard. You will be a different person completely. But nothing happens overnight.

Focus on learning the skills they will teach you. If they are training you right, then they will push your fitness to the maximum. They won't stop untill you are exhausted.

If you eat healthily with this - (you don't even have to diet...) i.e junk food and beers on rare occasions and eat light and conscious of what your inputting into your body whilst in training. Your physique will change... in the first month it could change rapidly. Do not worry - you'll lose weight, if you eat right and train hard.

Hope you enjoy learning to box

That pretty much sums it up.

Oh and to topic starter, don't worry about "Changing fat to muscle" just take Fraidy's post into consideration. Let your body do what it does.

First off......there's genetics. Be happy with who you are, because some people were born looking like Mr. Olympia and don't have to do a god damn thing to maintain that kind of physique.

Doesn't mean they can fight, doesn't mean they're strong, and it sure as hell doesn't mean they can box. Bulky muscles are the enemy of boxing......you need a lean physique with long, loose muscles.

Congrats brother! You have the first ingredient...MOTIVATION!

You didn't mention how tall you are, but at 252lbs, if you're not at least 5'10, from this moment on, you gotta discipline yourself. That means NO MORE donuts, soda, Mikey D's, etc, and your body will start to burn fat AFTER you've spent some energy. Then the body automatically goes to it's "stored fats", or "Complex-Carbohydrates". In other words do strenuous work outs FIRST! After about 30-40 minutes of strenuous activity, THEN will you begin to burn calories/fat!

So save the cardio for LAST! Not before, you'll only be using your enegry, but not burn fat, and wearout faster.

Now that you have the motivation...stay the coarse. It will get worse before it gets better. Take your body PAST your comfort zone.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!

Just over 6 months' work, the first 6 months I was boxing. More bodyshaping than bodybuilding, but you can see how much fat melted off me. The major thing did was cut out sugar and start running every day. Well, I started walking -- then walking stairs, then jogging, then running.

Yeah it looks like your waist went from a 38 to a 34.

Lol it looks like once of those adverts for "dieting supllements". Take 2 pills and you look this different overnight. Shows a picture of a fat old man and then a young 21 year old stud wearing Y -fronts.

What's funny is, I WAS a fat old man by most standards. I'm 36. And my waist did in fact go from a 38 (and tight, at that!) to a 34. Good eyes, Knives. FWIW, I now wear 32 jeans and they're comfortably loose.

Diet and exercise. It's hard but it's simple. I went from 205 to 175, my cholesterol dropped from 320 to 225, my resting heart rate from 75 to 49, and my BP is the lowest it's ever been that my doctor of 15 years can tell. I'm now walking around at 175 but I'm much more defined than in that pic. Bigger arms, slimmer waist, thicker back. That's me in the red headgear in my avy knocking that other dude -- who's also 175 -- around.
