View Full Version : Best Round of the Year ?
THRILLAinmanila 10-17-2004, 10:52 PM Pacman - Marquez Round 1.
Three ferocious knockdowns in the first canto.
And what makes it special is
that Marquez managed to get up
after the 3 KDs !
The Fix 10-17-2004, 10:54 PM i liked the final round of tyson-williams.there was a lot of action.also the last round of brewster-wlad because i predicted that would happen :D
borikua 10-18-2004, 12:28 AM The 5th round of the Tito-Mayo fight, that round was awesome..They both traded pwr punches in the first secnds of the round and then Tito exploded ang gaved Mayo the beating of his life..all judges scored it 10-8 for Tito (even Lederman)without a KD...
NiGe2011 10-18-2004, 12:52 AM I like the first round of Trinidad VS Mayorga, also round eight of Corrales VS Freitas...
Tha Greatest 10-18-2004, 01:10 AM yaaa corrales-freitas was good
corrales will beat mayweather in a rematch!!!!!and castillo!!!!
puppy_dogg 10-18-2004, 02:01 AM the first round of tito-mayorga was insane! when mayorga was letting tito clock him with left hooks i was pissing in my pants! that was a very exciting round. the first round of pacman-marquez was good to especialy at the end when jim lampley said "manny pacquiao is a storm!"
THRILLAinmanila 10-18-2004, 02:36 AM indeed the 1st round of tito-mayo was a heart-stopper as well !
Panzergirl 10-18-2004, 09:04 AM second round of the green-toney sparring bout..
grayfist 10-18-2004, 10:04 AM I'll go with the majority and say R1 Pac-JMM, but for this reason: It showed the best qualities of both fighters. Pac's power and JMM's heart.
PRboxingfan 10-18-2004, 10:59 AM I say round 8 of the Tito - Mayo fight or the 4th of the Daniel Edouard - Willie Gibbs was the ****, too!
jack_the_rippuh 10-18-2004, 11:06 AM Yeah right...Mayweather is Corrales' worse nightmare..
bigdlb12 10-18-2004, 11:25 AM Rd 1 of tito vs Mayo,
why hasnt anyone said DLH vs Hopkins??? LMAO
urdaddyinAZ 10-18-2004, 11:28 AM I'll take Round 2 of RJJ-Tarver II. Didn't last long, but it was like someone dropped an anvil on the boxing world.
JOM'S 10-18-2004, 12:45 PM I say PAC-JMM Round 1, I thought it was all over Manny shows why he is called the Destroyer in my country the Philippines, but every time JMM keep on standing, hitting back and showed he has the heart of a champion...
I also saw to missed punches if one of those 2 punches connected, it could have been a short night, I give props to both fighters for giving us a great fight.....
jabsRstiff 10-18-2004, 01:20 PM No offense...but you Pac fans have to step outside the box that is being Pac fans.
BEST ROUND OF THE YEAR ?
Be objective....which round offered the best back & forth action ?
Not which round made YOU the most happy.
Pac-JMM, rd. 1....was a ROUT.
THRILLAinmanila 10-19-2004, 07:27 PM At least you agreed on Pac-JMM rd. 1 ;)
jpboxer3 10-19-2004, 07:55 PM Roy Jones Jr vs Glen Johnson Rd5
Jones finally shows flashes of his old self but Johnson takes everyone of his powershot and comes back with his own fire power.Great action packed round. This is one of the few and probably the last time we will ever see R.J go to War in a fight.

I hope not. Seriously, you think Jones is through ?
olympic boy 10-19-2004, 11:08 PM pacman-jmm round 1 still the best so far :D
QueenCity 10-19-2004, 11:18 PM RD4 Edouard-Gibbs- these guys were going for dicapitation
The Fix 10-19-2004, 11:27 PM I hope not. Seriously, you think Jones is through ?
i am a huge roy jones fan and i honestly think he is through. his last fight was hard to watch and there is no way the reason for his poor performance is that he cant get up for fights anymore. i hope he doesnt come back or it could be dangerous for his long term health

Honest of you to say that. I guess it's just a bit hard to
see one of the greats at the twilight of his career...
BoxFan 10-20-2004, 03:54 AM A lot of fights to pick from this year.
I say round 5 of Tito-Mayorga was great.
Or make it more competitive and say round 1.
Though there was a few in Pemberton-Sheika that were great as well.
chito 10-20-2004, 04:37 AM best round of the year? pacquiao-marquez round 1? i don't agree. well, if marquez hadn't gone up from that last knockdown (thanks to the slow counting of that referee -- i don't know why he has chosen to count in spanish) that could have been the best round of the year for me! well, this is a point for argument but in my opinion, whether you are seeing this fight in any angle you want to see it, this is not my idea of a best round. the best round for me is when fighters try to win it, exchanging blows, never run, standing toe to toe. this usually happens in the last round especially if both cards are so close on points!

Actually, Marquez getting up after each of the 3 knockdowns is EXACTLY the reason why I think this is the best round of the year. Most other fighters would fade and die right after the 3rd KD

I agree. Most fighters would've just decided to refuse more punishment and stayed down there. But just like a true champion, he got up and survived...that i think provided the drama of that round.
jabsRstiff 10-20-2004, 07:13 AM You Pac fans need to get a clue.
"Rounds of The Year" are rounds where there is BACK n' FORTH action.
Either both are hurt, or knocked down....or there is just furious exchanges.
There's no way a round that featured one guy beating another guy down 3 TIMES, with no return fire, can be considered a great round.
The fact that JMM came back & made a great FIGHT out of it...makes it a candidate for "Fight Of The Year".....but not the round.
LuKahnLi 10-20-2004, 08:24 AM Round 8 of Sheika-Pemberton II Godamnit!!!!
JOM'S 10-20-2004, 01:24 PM jabsRstiff, as an avid PacFan the Pac-JMM Round 1 for me, is either the best round or the worst round:
Best Round: first half of the round JMM asserting himself and showing who's the boss next minute he was kissing the canvas 3 times, last 30 secs showing the heart of a champion, while still groggy fighting back and throwing punches while still receiving bombs....
Worst Round: should have ended on the first, I saw 2 missed punches by Manny if he connected on those 2 it was all over, now I have to settle for a draw and re-match....
It is tough to remember specific rounds like gatti/ward 9 or bowe/holy 10, so here are some fights that had to have great rounds.
Morales/Hernandez
Messi/Jirov
Pemberton/sheika as mentioned
castillo/Lazcano

Interesting point on JMM asserting himself at the beginning and somehow towards the end of the round. Could be a case for jabsRstiff's idea that the best round of the year ought to be a back & forth contest. Hey, were all entitled to our own views ...

My "idea" ?
It's not my idea...it's the STANDARD.
Go back & look at any round selected as the best one of the year, by The Ring or any pblication, & you'll see not a single one was a BLOWOUT.
No round that could have been scored 10-6 will ever be "Round of the Year".
You guys are basing your pick on what round made YOU the HAPPIEST.
That isn't how it works. Be objective.
JOM'S 10-21-2004, 11:28 AM jabsRstiff, Standard to be Round of the Year is liked what you said back & forth action and never a blowout can not be denied and is a fact....
but for me, just maybe there's a chance in hell Pac-JMM R1 will be the first, and its surely did get my vote and I am Happy...
