I kept freezing up, dammit. I just can't get past it; someone throws a flurry and I freeze. I've been fighting this since I started boxing over a year ago.

Positives:

1.) I was able to shake it off each time, dig deep, and resume slugging.
2.) In, IIRC, the second round, I nailed him with a straight left to the face that stunned him, and had this been an amateur bout instead of an exhibition match, I could've put him on the canvas with a combo; as it was, I stopped and asked him if he was OK even before the ref could step in (at my gym some guys call me "Gentleman Joe," BTW)
3.) I kept my foot outside his (I'm southpaw; he's orthodox) for most of the fight and whenever I saw him shift his foot outside I knew the right cross was coming and I was able to duck/block/intercept/parry it; a couple of times I hit him first with my left cross.
4.) My wife saw the whole thing and is proud as hell.

Negatives:

1.) I took another punch to the ear and it's ringing again; I may have reinjured or aggravated the perforation from a couple of weeks ago.
2.) See #1. ****ing ouch.
3.) He was nursing a rib injury and at the last moment I was told we were to throw straights only. :ugh:

It was, IMO, a good fight and I will have video and stills within 24 hours. It may be in several pieces as my father-in-law was taking video with his camera.

G'nite.

What I find interesting is the mind-set I have toward boxing in general before, during, and after the fight.

An hour before the fight: "Why am I doing this? I must be insane."

Immediately before the fight: "I am never doing this again."

During the fight: "Why am I doing this? I must be insane."

Immediately after the fight: "I am never doing this again."

Fifteen minutes after the fight: "I want to do that again!"

First thing in the morning after the fight: "I am never doing that again."

Half an hour later, answering an email from a friend who missed it, finding myself writing, "I'll be fighting at the next one in October. You should come."

That's how I was during wrestling. Nervous as hell warming up, getting on the mats, shaking hands...as soon as the whistle blew I felt fine.

You'll be fine once the bell goes - then its over sooooooooo fast. Time speeds up it seems. Its over before you know it. Afterwards - once you've got over the fact you haven't died like you originally thought was gonna happen. You will be buzzed mate.

You will never be succesful with that kind of mentality. I have to admit, I am like that myself but I try my very best not to think like that. Its just normal though. Most people are like that. Thats why only few people are succesful with it

If you don't allow that perforation to heal properly, you will be deaf for the rest of your life in that ear, long after you have forgotten about what you were doing right now....

Well done fraidycat,

Your posts continue to inspire me.
Also being in my 30's it's good to see other guys in my age bracket giving it a go and doing well.
I have also had the same thoughts when I go down to the gym. I get there and hit the bags and watch other guys spar and think "why am i doing this" then I get my gear on and think "I really am nuts" Then I get in and think "oh shit". Then when I get out I look and think "I want to do that agin".
I am not looking to compete in anything serious like you want to. I am just looking to maybe get good enough to do the inhouse comps we have.

I can't wait to see the Video:)

OK, so my father-in-law only got a few 30-second clips on his camera phone. Here's what he sent me. Flame away, but creative criticism will also be appreciated.

On review, I can see immediately that I need to quit leaning and relax. Man, I look scared in the videos. I think I loosened up later in the fight.

I will see if I can get the entire fight from someone.

Well done mate.

Looks like you got a little tired at the end, those punches were getting slower.
To me you had a great block. he wasn't getting much through.
The only thing I can see was when you got tired you droped your punches and were slow to get your guard up.
But I am no expert and I do the same thing.

Great job.
I hope one day I can get somthing of me up for all to see.

Which was you? I think mixing the punches up a little would have helped either fighter... didn't see any body work or hooks... maybe you were limited during those clips though?

Congrats for getting out there.

Our punches were limited to straights; my understanding was, he was nursing a rib injury. I am in the red headgear.

Ehh, he's a friend of mine and a real nice guy. And it was just a friendly exhibition match.

At 00:05 into the second video (below) he unloads on me -- you can hear the crowd going "Ooooooooo" -- and at 00:07 I hit him with an overhand right -- probably the only full-force punch I threw in the fight, IIRC, and it sent him back two steps -- at which point I gave the boy a moment to reflect on the error of his ways.

You can see me motion, "You okay? Good. Now, don't make me do that again." :boxing:

Winky,

Your defense was what shined the most in this clip. The straight right hand at the end was fun to watch, too. Props for getting a video on here.

good stuff... u look too tense though, u need to be more relaxed in there. in the toughest fight i ever had, the other guy was just schooling me with his combinations, i could only land one meaningful shot at a time because there was so much coming in. i know if i hadn't tensed up so much i could have let the hands go
