LAS VEGAS (CP) - UFC president Dana White questioned former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre's mental toughness Thursday, saying the Montreal mixed martial arts fighter fell victim to nerves before losing his first title defence to Matt Serra.

Serra, who earned his title shot by virtue of winning Season 4 of ''The Ultimate Fighter'' reality TV show, scored a shock first-round TKO over St. Pierre at UFC 69 in April.

''I've said this forever. Georges St. Pierre is one of the most gifted, talented athletes I've seen in any sport. Not just mixed martial arts,'' White told a pre-UFC 71 conference call Thursday. ''This kid is amazing. And I've always said I think he's the future of this sport, I think he's this, I think he's that.

''Let me tell you what. After watching that Matt Serra fight, I question Georges St. Pierre's mental ability to fight.''

''This kid was so nervous to fight Matt Serra, it was blowing my mind. I think that Georges St. Pierre needs to work on his mental game, because his physical game is second to none. ... The only thing I've seen, any kink in his armour, is his head.''

I know GSP is young but there are other fighters younger then him that are mentally stronger. Why have such a raw talent like his and let your mind take it away? well why should i bother saying **** cause I have the same problem haha.

what ya guys think, could this leave gsp losing his important fights?
How long you think it will take him to mature?
He already said he is a man now before the matt hughes fight, is he changing his mind about that too haha.
Well whatever it is, im still a big fan.

Maybe he was just nervous because it was his first title defense. It's happen to alot of young champions.

Great article, thanks for posting!

I think it does ring true that GSP is a bit immature. For God sake, the guys is an awesome pysical specimen, but at his age and making the amount of cash that he has he should at least consider moving out of his parents house! Dued, if you are 25 years old and still living at hom something ain't right!

It would be wierd for GSP to be nervous since he's been in bigger fights, but his mental game must have not been there against Serra, because like Dana said GSP is one of the most gifted athletes in the UFC. That's all right I think he learned a lot from that loss to Serra and will be back and better than ever. On another note good luck in your fight 2swell.
