RonRoss 05-30-2007, 08:03 PM cause were ****ing solid
no but really...we do...and its abit strange, i thought about it today when we sparred and wondered why our trainer didnt give us any, i would buy some but i would feel like a dick turning up with headgear if nobody else did
SpeedKillz 05-30-2007, 08:10 PM thats silly. u should def spar with headgear ur not in there to get hurt and ****. tell ur trainer u wanna use headgear cuz when u fight (if ur plannin on it) u wanna be 100% optimal!
Peterp 05-30-2007, 08:11 PM The problem with sparring without headgear is that you tend to not spar as hard. If you do go hard without headgear, then you can't spar as often, just common sense.
We spar with headgear but as a change up we spar with no headgear probably once a fortnight or once every 3 weeks.
BrooklynBomber 05-30-2007, 08:15 PM We usually did light sparring with no headgear. Obviously, serious sparring should be done with headgear.
PessimisticPug 05-30-2007, 08:18 PM You spar with no headgear now but once one of you ends up with a cut or a nasty swell above one of your eyes you will resort to the tradition and Usa Boxing regulation of wearing headgear.
I do wonder, is your gym registered with usa boxing.
Sparring without headgear does not make one solid or even suggest it. What it does mean is that you are going to sustain undo damage while practicing and learning your art. Save it for the pros, boxing without headgear. Its really not too bad getting smacked with 16oz gloves and no headgear but why take the risk of cuts and such. You could train your ass off for 3 or 5 months for a bout coming up and then have it all scratched because you sustained a cut with no headgear in training. When your doing it for a living you will understand more when you cant get that check....................Rockin':boxing:
RonRoss 05-30-2007, 08:20 PM i was just joking about being solid and no it isnt registered with usa boxing because its in bolton, united kingdom lol

I would tell my coach to go "F" himself if he told me to spar without headgear. I had one crazy kamikaze of a coach, he'd throw me at anyone and tell me to kick their ass, yet he never once asked me to do it without headgear...........Rockin':boxing:
RonRoss 05-30-2007, 08:29 PM i better get some headgear then
chabobo66 05-30-2007, 08:31 PM when I was green, I used to think sparring with no head gear ment I was tough. Then the years go by and you notice that it'sot so smart afterall. Your trainer must not care about his fighters if he lets that go. I simple accidentle head but will cause a cut or swealing and then you won't be able to fight amateur or professional untill it heals. The main reason for headgears os to prevent cuts. Not to prevent being knocked out.
Tell your trainer this

Jimmy The Gent 05-30-2007, 08:52 PM I box at clovie and only one boy wears headgear, and he whoops us
David06 05-30-2007, 11:47 PM Man you need to grow some balls. Don't worry about looking like a fool wearing headgear. When it's your health and career on the line, don't play around. At the very least, buy some headgear and wear it during sparring. But really, you should talk to whoever is in charge and find out why nobody is wearing headgear.
shawn_ 05-31-2007, 12:34 AM Just an FYI, headgear doesnt prevent tramatic brain injury. Headgear is used to prevent cuts caused by headbutts. Its why you can still get rocked hard with headgear on. Getting rocked with headgear on is the same as getting rocked with headgear off, still a better idea to use headgear. Just dont go thinking you can absorb big shots because he doesnt prevent brain damage.
DoctorKillJoy 05-31-2007, 09:32 AM I've heard something about sparring with headgear making people lazier on their defense... maybe your coach feels that way. Or maybe he's trying to save money? Has anyone asked about it or is it just that he doesn't supply it?

That is indeed correct. Headgear does keep cuts way down, and reduces swelling. But considering amateurs compete in headgear, you'd might as well train with it on.
At my gym we always use head guards because we spar quite hard but if i'm mucking around with family or freinds i'll spar without a head guard :boxing:
platinummatt! 05-31-2007, 12:28 PM In my brothers gym they didnt wear headgear and as far as I can tell didnt really bother with weightclasses

Headgear doesn't just prevent traumatic brain injury... some studies have thought that wearing head guards can actually make the blunt force impact worse.
It makes sense too. When you have your headgear on, it weighs a couple of ounce, then you sweat into it, making it even heavier. Then you get hit in the face WITH all this extra weight on your bonce. Your head goes back with the force of the punch AND the weight of the headgear.
I still wear one though, i cut and bruise easily on my eyes.
Trick 05-31-2007, 01:27 PM Not to mention it makes the head a bigger target
